Injury List for our Rnd1 match

If my eyes didn't deceive me, the Footy Show had McKenzie down for a spot on the half back flank.

I think your eyes did deceive you as they had the two McDonalds on the back flanks and Jordie on the bench. This as has been mentioned was a squad, not an official team list.

I know it wasn't the official list... and I am positive he was on the flank (his name appeared on the left towards the middle of the team layout). The reason I mentioned it was that if they are posting a "possible" team, he seemed a strange choice to put in the starting line-up given he will need to be elevated from the rookie list.

Strauss WILL play.

I have never once seen a kid included on an extended bench for what will be his first AFL game and not get in on gameday.

I've noticed this about 10 years ago and without fail the kid always plays.

You called it.

I'm willing to subscribe to this theory.

The Footy Show must have got lucky when they made up that McKenzie and Spencer would be in the squad, considering us supporters and members didn't even know about their rookie elevation.

There is neither a deadline for preliminary 'squads' this far ahead of games, nor does Channel 9 make up the squads they show when their broadcast is shown early in the week.

The clubs submit a sort of draft squad purely for the benefit of The Footy Show which they are in no way obligated to maintain. What you saw last night will be indicative of what we will see at 5pm tonight but last night's version is entirely unofficial insofar as any number of changes may be made.

This is exactly the same situation as what we see every year when TFS shows the extended 'squads' for the QB game on the Thursday night broadcast.

Is that correct Inner? What source is that please? Not saying you are wrong as I don't personally know myself, but I couldn't tell you the last time a side picked a team with some different players that weren't originally listed on TFS, regardless of what day they were playing, and if it were an extended squad for the sake of TV. I''m pretty sure the clubs can get fined if they include players not originally listed in an extended squad.

I take back my previous post

looking forward to Blease playing his first AFL game. No doubt the Demons will have a tough year BUT it will be a year the side will build from strength to strength with each game.

Can not wait to be back at the G this Saturday :)

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
