Paul Wheatley

Not much has been said about Paul but I must say I've enjoyed his work as a Melbourne player. And while never achieving the recognition attained by fellow 2000 debutantes Brad Green and Cam Bruce, Paul quietly went about his job in a thoroughly professional manner.

It was nice to see the following in the Sunday Age - when Jack Grimes was asked Is there someone at your club who is your behind-the-scenes mentor? Jack replied - "Paul Wheatley, He helps us young guys out so much, especially playing down in the back line. He's a really good thinker on the game...and gives me lots of feedback"

G'donya Paul! Go to the USA and make a packet!!!

Did anyone else love seeing those 70m Kicks yesterday? They were just hugeee. The goal was a nice touch as well.

Well done Paul (Supergoal) Wheatley.

Aside from that super-duper-goal those kick-ins were pure footy enjoyment. I mean how ofter is that going to happen where you just push all logic and gameplan aside and just let it rip !! That was a marvellous present to Wheats I thought...and i enjoyed it too. :)

I think he loaded up the barrell with one of them?

I also heard he did a simpson during the week and pulled his calf? any truth in this?

Saturday I believe. Got gastro that night too.

Yeah, well done Wheats, on a great MFC career. I've loved your work and believed for many seasons that you were the barometre for our side. Good luck with life after football.

Will miss you Wheats. Hope you have a crack at the NFL. Couldnt stand seeing you in another jumper.

Your "socks up" on sunday was a first and the way I read it was that you are so proud playing for the deez.

They didn't give you 31 for nothing.

Thanks heaps for the memories and all the very best. :(

Glad to see Wheatley going out in style. Those bombs were the highlights of the game for me, along with the goal. All were so classicly wheatley. I'm the same...couldn't hack seeing him in another jumper. He's a player i've heard get bad-mouthed in the past, but he's always been a great hard worker for MFC.

I shot my mouth off on a previous Paul Wheatley thread and I'm glad those posts were deleted. Sorry to anyone who was offended and thanks to Paul Wheatley for your career at the Demons. Watching the game yesterday reminded me again how much I love watching the Demons play football and for 9 years Wheatley has been part of that journey. Thanks also to the moderators who kept the piece of rice paper intact that allowed me to continue posting on this site.

Roost It.

P.S. I'm really glad the last 3 years of football are done and dusted, roll on 2010

I loved the bombs in to the middle; it was obvious that they (the second one at least) were purely for humour purposes rather than to a plan, but it was a nice touch. Couldn't have planned the 'super goal' any better either.

Despite the loss, it was a fantastic way for all three to go out. Personally, I ended the season on a bit of a high despite everything. I feel like we won.

There are no words to describe how glad I am that this season is finally over, and that we must now surely have passed the bottom of the trough.

Maybe I am too optimistic but I felt the same.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
