The Steven May Thread from 2008

Featured Replies

This is not a Steven May thread. This is a Cale Morton, Patrick Dangerfield, Melbourne drafting thread, in that order.

thats the one

i am at school with him

and yes, i rate him higher than jack watts (probably a bit of a bias opinion)

but i dont think he can go into next years draft with the new rules someone was telling me

so will probably be one of those underage players that the gold coast can pick up

il find out on monday

but he is a superstar...BOG for a schoolboy match on the MCG and did not look lost

good at finding space

can take a very strong contested mark

good solid body

booming kick

indegenous heritage

and very competitive...really bleeds for the jumper

What a ripper of a thread.

I wouldn't quite go along with the Buddy Franklin call made somewhere else, but all the above is pretty spot on assessment from @Yencks.

Good find @Whispering_Jack

I know there's plenty of misses with the draft but you have to wonder how the hell someone selects a Cale Morton over pretty much anyone, especially up against a Danger type.

Good find by both!  Anyone know the whereabouts of Yencks?  Got his man in the end....11 years later

Not to derail a great historic thread - but at the end of their first 3 years it was seen that we'd gotten a great pick in Morton and that Danger might not ever come on as a midfielder, by that stage Danger had only 3 or 4 games with more than 20 disposals, while Morton had around 30, and had multiple games where he had over 30 disposals. Of course he had a few injury issues from that point and never got going, while Danger became Danger. You can argue development/injuries/maturity/desire etc. but based on their first 2/3 years and supposed improvement from their you can't blame the recruiters for picking Morton.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
