Had a good chat to Charlie Spargo at the end. He said he didn't expect to play so many games and to walk straight in and play finals after the teams been out of them for so long.

I told him I read about him throwing up in the last session. He said some do some don't and he seems to be one that does. I gave him my secret tip on how to stop throwing up in intense exertion as I used to do it all the time bike riding at the top of hills. He liked it and said he's going to try it. So when he starts blitzing next year, you'll all secretly know why.

    What is the secret then?

Joel Smith looks like an absolute weapon with the build he has now. Combined with his athleticism and improved footy IQ, I’m wondering if he could really blossom next year? Just in the small amount of vision I’ve seen, he looks to have the technical aspects of ball control at a whole new level.

Would put my mind more at ease with Lever’s recovery and the end of Lewis’s career.

I have high aspirations for Joel. Can he play the running game on the wing a la Isaac Smith?

It would have been painless though - either the sickly sweet aroma of my armpits or the rather more pungent whiff of tinea would have nailed him

So who won the main bout?

Looks like Robert Culp in that photo. Great tennis player for the US on the fringe of Davis Cup selection. Lousy actor.

Not so sure,  RC played a tennis coach in the TV series I Spy with Bill Cosby as the tennis pro. But played a great cameo in Get Smart as a Turkish waiter in an I Spy spoof episode. Very funny. Not sure he could actually play tennis? I would say god d actor, not so good player.

  5. I think this can work. First create 2 more expansion teams to make 20 and divide into 2 conferences of 10. New teams would be playing out of Dubbo and Kalgoorlie. Compromise the draft for the next 5 years with priority picks for the Dubbo Quolls and the Kalgoorlie Miners.

Each conference plays each other twice, to get 18 rounds. Top 4 from each conference play off, 1 v 4, 2 v 3. Then winners play off to be conference champions. That’s 23 rounds, then we have a best of 3 AFL World Series Grandfinal playoff. Can’t go wrong with this formula surely!

  7. Yes I like the team but hope we can weave in Preuss and Vanders into our best 22 as I would love us to be a physically intimidating team that can match it with the best sides in talent as well. A lot of premierships have been won by nasty sides who blend mongrel with talent.

I've never shied away from the fact that I'm probably a pervert and a bit [censored] up.

However, the posts I read on this thread, reassure me that I'm the only sane and balanced [censored] here.

And me as well and I would add DC and maybe Moons,  not sure about the others though!

I just watched the Steven May interview (again). Epic recruit.

We’re going to win the Flag next year. It’s happening. We have the best list. It’s perfect.

And our coaching staff is elite, as is our culture.

We just need a good run with injuries: Gawn, T McDonald, Oliver etc.

If and when we win this thing, what are you going to do? How does one celebrate this stuff? I genuinely have no idea.

    It’s actually making me nervous.

After preparing for ultimate success in 1989, and then very confidently after 1994 and again post 2000 and even post 2002 I don’t take any previous years form as a guide for the next! Injuries, complacency have always intervened.

I hope our club has indeed changed and can build on previous success.

I trust the shiraz stockpile is taking a big hit tonight Bitters. The more you drink, the more obscure the words you use in your posts

Forget the Shiraz, try the Malbec.

In the interests of uplifting this thread as Ernie has been imploring recently, I thought the various Legal Eagles who inhabit this thread might be interested in this set of books I stumbled upon in a Jesuit library in Córdoba, Argentina today while taking a short break from my arduous wine tasting duties. The books date from the early 1700’s and were part of a library of 10,000 books, some stretching back to when printing first began. Unfortunately when the Jesuits were kicked out of South America in 1754 many of the books on science and philosophy were burned by the Franciscians as they were deemed to be heretical!

    ah well.....

    Have you taken something DC?

Club has pushed him out the door, ridiculous 30 metre wind up kicks for goals struggling to make the distance, poor body language, injury prone, leadership issues, like the share market, sell at a high, it’s over, we want you to stay bro but you know, do what’s best for you, like leave.

No not pushed out the door, more the case that he would not commit to an extension beyond 2019 so we are moving early as you say while the price is right. Not because he struggles for distance on kicks for heavens sake. You pass on a potential 60 goal a year key position forward at your own peril and certainly not for a gorilla marking backman a la Sam May by choice. I think the FD believe he is going if not this year, then next year.

Lin Jong and possibly a heap of other lesser names in season who are fighting for contracts but not the big names post season.

The asking for a trade is an interesting point in all of this. I very much get the feeling Melbourne have asked Hogan to explore his options. He might be agreeing to a trade rather than asking for one.

Yes this possibility crossed my mind as well. I haven’t followed all the media discussions closely enough but with Josh Mahoney saying that we couldn’t get May unless Hogan decides to go and Hogan supposedly only recently asking if a trade back home was possible this year and then hearing that the Club has spoken to May on two occasions already.....well something doesn’t seem to add up!

I think the club put it on Hogan to extend his contract past 2019 now and if he didn’t commit they decided to act.

  14. I went to Swinburne Institute of Technology in the 70’s studying engineering and there was a Scrimshaw there who had played a few games with Hawthorn or Richmond. Can’t recall his first name but wonder is Jack a son or nephew?

What are the rumours surrounding Vandenburg can anyone tell me please?

Could be off to the Swans, family issues, father passed away during the year, and AVB has been trying to run the family business in Canberra from here. Hope he stays.

Did enough for me to be on the list. With some more positional training he could be ok.

I believe he could be anything with an injury free run over the next 3 years. He has all the athletic tools needed at AFL level but also the footy smarts and pedigree to be more than just an athlete playing footy. In the future he could go forward or he could play wing as well although not sure of his tank at the moment. Could he develop into an Isaac Smith type running player? I am very positive.

  17. Now that the Eagles have won the 2018 flag we know all other 17 clubs will be analysing their list, their game plan and just how they won on the day. The AFL is full of copycats as we know. It now seems to me that chaos footy and small defensive forwards, small running halfbacks with intercept marking backs may not be so much in vogue next year. Today’s win for the Eagles was also a victory for 2 legitimate ruckman, two key marking forwards and at least two big marking/spoiling key position backman. It’s like 1990’s footy reborn. Yes there are still running halfbacks, inside mids and small, crumbing forwards but there always were I think.

The ramifications are I think that the value of secondary ruckman (Pruest), key position backman who can handle the gorillas  (May) has now gone up but so has Hogan’s value as a key forward to offset that for us. The WC structure wants the ball played predominately in the air and this would also help alleviate some of the AFL’s worries about congestion.

Interesting to see how the recruiters react to the WC blueprint.

Well yes if he stood on the grassy knoll I suppose. But then that knoll was chock full of Mafia, FBI, CIA, KKK and Cuban Operatives as I remember. Very crowded at the time.

    May is overrated

Maybe but today’s GF result has just improved his stocks in the competition. West Coast have won a cup with traditional big bodied defenders who could hold the line early. Intercept marking forwards are great and so are receiving half back runners but old fashioned big bodied marking KPB will now be well sort after.
