our pre-season is looking like a terrible one. All of our good players have been on modified programs. Oliver, Brayshaw, viney, melksham, lever etc ...

But the rehab group has been working hard back in Melbourne, a lot of running, ball work including kicking drills. Just not doing physical contact stuff and match simulations. So I see no problem as I think they will be ready to go later in February.

It was generally a good session and well received by the impressive crowd .I thought the stand out was Joel Smith .He clunked everything and looked the fittest I have seen him .His kicking was ok as well

I really hope J Smith stays fit and shows his full potential this year. I really think the sky is unlimited for this bloke if all goes right, good height, great leap, very mobile etc. It seems they want him to play forward, hopefully it works this year.

So do. the Blues get screwed and have a full season one man short as we did when that Great Narcissist HO'B pulled the plug in the off season?

Or are there now rules governing this?

New rules allow Carltank to draft in a replacement, so said a Carltank spokesperson today.

Stretch didn't train with the main group and did a number of drills by himself.

First he moved the guys' backpacks into a big pile. Strength training, probably.

Then he unwound extension cables for the boom box and laptops. Then plugged them together to make one really long cable. Great agility.

Then he tightened the guy ropes on the tent. Then watched the other guys training for a while. I think it was a recovery period mandated by the physios.

Most of the rest of the time he was running slow laps, between Gosch's and AAMI getting cold water bottles for the guys. Didn't slow down at all, even in the heat.

Each time the coaches gathered the players in a group for instructions, he ran out and held up some whiteboards with magnets on them. I couldn't see what was on them.

At one stage I saw Goodwin approach him and ask for a loan of 50 bucks. Stretch got out his wallet but his reaction time was a bit slow and Goody really gave it to him. High standards even at this time of year. You play like you train!

While the main group was doing match simulations, Stretch cut up a whole bag of oranges with his non-preferred hand.

Towards the end of the session, he picked up a big sack and collected the stray footies in it. One was right on the boundary line, he tried a freak goal with it and it missed and the ball went out on to Punt Road. Macca paid out on him and said he's supposed to be collecting the footies, not playing with them. Part of his rehab I suppose.

A really strong session and if he keeps it up, there's every chance we'll see him collecting footies on the G in September.

Watching training today MR I would broadly agree with your summary, in principle at least. The only differences I had from your observations and they are just minor issues - he did train with the main group for the whole session and early on did routines in a small group of mids that included Harmes, Fritsch, Gus, AVB, Kolodjashni, and Sparrow. This group seemed to be the outside  mid group of receivers who will receive from the insiders. And the insiders were mostly in the rehab group, Clarrie, Jones, Viney. Make of that what you will but he is definitely still in the running for a position on the outside wing but competition is stiff. And he did well in the game simulations in between managing the magnet board and organising the oranges.

Returning to the training, after the semantic, pedantic and grammatical sidetrack

Joel Smith is training as a forward, same with Dec Keilty and JKH

I used to do huntin, shootin, fishin and campin, but I called it being in the Army

I am loving what I see of J Smith as a forward, was only at training briefly but during the full oval play simulation I noted his full tilt lead out of the square to take a mark on his chest/shoulder as his body seemed to be tilted forward at 45 degrees to take possession. The opposing backman had no hope of spoiling the incoming ball. I still think he could be great value on a wing but looking at KK, Fritsch and Stretch, maybe we have those roles covered?

oooh sexy - our program is cutting edge.

anyone have intel on what the paradigm shift is? Let's touch base, going forward and get distruptive, as I can see all the low hanging fruit in the pipeline. I guess we need to leverage our assets and move the needle and think outside the box to synergise  our 360degree thinking.

So I'd love to pick your brain and take a deep dive.

I called out “buzzword bingo” half way through reading your post!

Firstly I didn’t have a privileged background. We were so poor that my parents couldn’t afford shoes for me and painted my feet black to look like I was wearing shoes. Often they couldn’t afford clothes for me and my father would let me borrow his cap so I could look out our window and people wouldn’t know I was naked. My only pet was a rock which I carried around.

    Sheer luxury, I say!

Has anyone noticed if Preuss's aerobic capacity has improved relative to Gawny since he's arrived. I'm sure this will be a focus and why he's doing so much running with Gawny.

You might be right but I really hope you're wrong.

Preuss's recruitment for me was one of the more interesting in quite a while for two reasons. Firstly I was sure it meant Hogan was out the door. Secondly I reckon it means we will follow the two Grand Finalists and have two key forwards and a resting ruckman as a forward. They proved it isn't too top heavy. It's amazing how things have changed so quickly from the Tigers 2017 Premiership which everyone thought showed that teams would only have one key forward.  You couldn't say Preuss is less mobile than Cox and I would say Vardy as well. Logically his choice to come to the Dees makes no sense if he was told you're only going to get a game if Gawn gets injured. I think they are going to play him in that Cox/Vardy role and the ruck rule changes mean the days of players like Harmes and Grigg playing in the ruck are over. You are going to have to have a genuine second ruck.

Spot on, as I have said before I hope we can construct a game plan that includes Preuss and AVB for the potential hurt factor that great sides always have. Preuss at training seems to have it, size, mobility, hand-eye coordination, reasonable speed. Now those physical attributes don’t guarantee success on game day  but fingers crossed.

And you are right the top heavy theory was blown away by WC this year with 2 big ruckman, a lumbering McGovern down back and J Kennedy up forward. Big men all over the field and they won a premiership by keeping the ball in the air as much as possible, with nimble smalls ready to pounce on a loose ball.

With all this off-season eulogising and "monster" myth making about the new recruits in particular Brandon Preuss, well before the advent of the real stuff. When will the hype actually meet the  reality or the reality meet the hype?  Seems more than a whiff of bathwater out there post 2018.

  10. Watching some slow TV on SBS on demand, the Indian Pacific 3 hour version, riveting TV but the journey is a bit rushed for me, like T20 cricket. Can’t wait for Saturday’s 17 hour version of Perth to Sydney by train non stop!

Please allow me to apologise Earl, the festivities started early today.

Fair enough as I say Happy New Year to all and especially to to Sir Michael Pallin for x%%#@ sake for services to Monty Python or who knows what, while some such as I soldier on with little recognition! Such is life.

I have just received a call from Government House, advising of my forthcoming knighthood and henceforth I will be known as Sir Redleg of Demonland.

Apparently her Majesty is a major fan of this thread and reads it to the corgis each night.

As modest as I can be, I must say it is long overdue.

PS. Earl already has his honour and that is as far as he is going, an Earl.

Can I just say how inspiring it was to hear Her Majesty’s Christmas Day Message tonight! Such wisdom, such insight on life and world affairs by our Majesty, we are all truely blessed to be part of the Commonwealth.

Well once I would have adopted the bah humbug line.

    But I'm a reborn citizen.

I'll have all my fellow Demonlanders know that I'm a reformed character. No more sleaze or smut. No more bannings or deleted posts. No more multiple shamings on MeToo .

I'm an empathic and sensitive male, ready to embrace a new world of equality.

Sounds like a big order of New Years resolutions Uncle! Good luck. Me, I have resolved to sign up to Feb Fast next year to give my liver a rest. That will really be a test.

Merry Christmas to one and all.

Is that what the suppression orders in the media are about? The Age and The Hun have been making a big song and dance about it lately. Earl, your chances of entering St Peter's pearly gates are now zero.

All I can say Mr Moons is that both you and Uncle are skirting with contempt by breach of a court order! And for the record if Mr Redleg is correct and a certain person does visit this site, it is all just false MeToo scuttlebutt from the 70’s no less! Who can remember what they did in the 70’s?

I must say I had a hearty laugh when reading this morning's Herald Sin.

It seems there is a move afoot to have Warnie Knighted!

FMD! Sir Shane of House Bogan!

I reckon our own @Earl Hood who has been smoozing after a gong for years, would leap of the uppermost balcony of his Fitzroy Hipster Palace if it happened.

Oh contrare my good Uncle, may Sir Shane get his knighthood for his trifling 700 plus test wickets, so be it to keep the masses amused. Please keep this information to yourself at all costs. I have been informed by a reliable source within the Palace that I will be recognised at some stage in the new year! The Royal whisper is that there are vacancies in the Royal Order of the Garter no less, members selected exclusively by Her Majesty, not the Parliamentary rabble ! Think about that for a moment, perhaps there will be a touch more respect in your tone from now on!

  16. I received mine today and while it is obvious that the club would have gone to great lengths to prioritise the delivery of my membership package I ask you all to be patient, the ordinary packages are on their way to you all.
