The Kookaburra's dominated South Africa tonight . A 6 - 0 drubbing . Fair start to their campaign . The Hockeyroos lost to the Kiwi's (0-1) yesterday but apparently this was not unexpected . New Zealand are ranked 6 in the world and the Aussies are ranked 7 . Came as a bit of a surprise that we're ranked that low . If you think the Olympics are too commercial then how 'bout footy ? Apart from the ads played at a billion decibels at the games , they even emblazon advertizing on the actual football . How crass is that ? (though Sherrin and Ross Faulkner is hardly 'Non commercial') We live in a commercial World , Biffen . And it's been that way for a fair while . Atlanta did change things somewhat but trying to fight the advancement of commercialism in sport is futile .

Let the games begin ! Lot's of Aussie's in action tonight including involvement in 8 rowing heats and 8 swimming heats from about 6.30pm . The cycling road race for men starts at 7pm and we're well represented in a host of other sports . There's medals up for grabs in the swimming finals from 4.30am and the Opals are in action against Great Britain at 7.15am tomorrow morning .

Darryl sadly passed away today at the age of 62 . He was at the forefront of the Australian music scene in the late 60's / early 70's and wrote songs for Rick Springfield , Olivia Newton-John and many other artists . In his later life he formed part of the 'Cotton Keays & Morris' band . Will be sadly missed . I have vague memories of the 'Footy Olympics' in the early 70's ! Seem to recall Des Tuddenham winning the long distance run (2 years running?) Sadly this 'Monumental' sporting event wasn't around for long . Think the players wore their footy gear and competed in various Track and Field events . I'm hoping at least 1 other person can verify this tale .
