Herald Sun reports Gysberts to be shown the door...Neeld has gone mad!!!
nutbean replied to Tex's topic in Melbourne Demons
This had me really confused so I went onto wikipedia ( I know,I know -not all that reliable) and looked up Australian Rules Football -I was shocked that the word coach wasnt mentioned once whereas the word players was mentioned too many times to count. There were countless references as to what a player should and shouldnt do but complete absense anything about the coach and his role. Strange, no? http://en.wikipedia...._rules_football -
close tough and immediate action is required, and removing certain players is not the answer.

I have those emotional attachments in spades and wouldn't cut Cook (too early) or Gysbert ( shows potential) - but I appreciate that Neeld is not a [censored] like I am and is prepared to make hard calls that I am not prepared to make.(I would still have Simon Buckley running around and I had a certain amount of love for Juice Newton) -

Not HE ....the players - the players like Moloney,Davey, Petterd, Gysberts, Green & Sylvia (although to both their credits they performed better later in the season). Neeld is trying to set a level and expectation and at this moment this is not being met. So certain players will go. Why are you so unwilling to lay blame where most of it lies - with the players ? -

If you cannot see a more defensive game plan then you are not watching. If you were you would see the semblance of plan really poorly executed. What I see in Neeld so far is his unwillingness to put up with the same crap and acceptance of mediocrity as we have for so many seasons. Some players will respond to Neeld - others wont and will move on. -

This is what is doing my head in....There is common concensus " we got our drafting wrong". Then why are there so manyposts "how could we get rid off......" Just doesnt make sense. -

The only thing unusual about the moves is that it has been unusual for the MFC. -
Correct -players who are given support are expected to conform to norms on etiquette. correction - people who are given support are expected to conform to norms on etiquette. There may be some leeway given if the person has no understanding or exposure at all to required etiquette but I dont subscribe to the view that "we dont say thank you in our culture and even if I am aware it is the norm in you culture I dont need to abide by it ".

I am not sure I would go as hard as RR however how far should our allowances for zero acknowledgement of what has transpired from a special case like Liam go ? I wish Liam all the best and appreciate him putting family first but the MFC has gone above and beyond the call to help and from what I can tell has been exemplary in its dealings with Liam. Absolutely his family comes first and I am not suggesting TV appearances but a statement released through club from him (even if it is written by the club and approved by Liam or his management but written as Liams voice) reflecting the same thoughts that rudeboy stated is the least we are owed. Note - I have chosen the word owed carefully as the MFC as employers of Liam have gone way above what would be considered a normal employer/employee relationship for his welfare and wellbeing- we are owed a minimum of acknowledgment of what has transpired. Edit - do not confuse the two issues of Liam going to Adelaide to be with his family (which I assume no one has a problem with) and the absense of acknowledgment of what the club has done for him and apparently will continue to do for him

If you look at our stats we are actually lopsided in contested/uncontested ball - in that we dont get enough uncontested footy.
-
Actually I liked the Rivers and Garland move. We moan that coaches dont make a move or try something different and then bitchslap them when we do. We may have been leaking goals in defense but we also werent kicking goals after Big Mitch went down so why not try something to get a score on the board.

It is part of coaching but I get what DemonWA is saying - we have seen a lift in few footballers - Jones and Howe to mention a couple but by the same token we have seen Moloney go backwards from last year. A good house requires good solid foundations and at the moment Neeld is digging trenches to lay the foundations. It does remain to be seen whether he can go to the next level - build a good house and coach it to success.

Please direct me to anyone who has said Neeld is a wonderful coach ??? I think you have misread what Neeld supporters are on about - so I will try to make it clear and I think others may support the view. Most Neeld supporters would tell you that the jury is still out on whether he can actually coach or not however what is making us (me?) support him is his no nonsense approach to players. At various stages Green,Davey, Moloney,Petterd and others have not done as required and what do you know - back to Casey they go. Best and Fairest's, leading goalkickers, captaincy and loyal service mean nothing to him - play it his way or out you go. We are now witnessing the same actions at the end of the season - Neeld has looked at players for a year and some will be in his plans going forward and others will be shown the door. Daniher at the end of his reign played favourites - great stalwarts like Jeff White who were not contributing at the end of their careers still got games. Bailey IMO was too soft on everyone. Nurturing is one thing but his approach certainly did not nurture a hard edge. So we have had a lifetime of mediocrity and in comes a coach whose message I read as "no more". We were putrid this year and I am tipping 25% of the list will be turned over. Can Neeld coach ? Who knows. What I do like is he is not going to die wondering. He will have Neeld players next year and whilst I am not expecting a finals berth I am hopeful of seeing why he has taken the approach he has. Why he has chosen not to take an easy option and give players who he doesnt see in our future more time to see how they turn out. I am sure one or two will bite us in the arse but thats football. I like the direction he is taking and look forward to all Neeld supporters getting the answer as to whether he can actually coach or not. As an addendum I am a believer that a coach may be able to get more out of a player but 95% of a player improving comes from a player wanting to get the best out of himself. To blame a coach for Petterd and Moloney stinking it up is to remove blame from where the blame should be 100% directed.

Ricky Bulbovers long lost brother ?
-
If you care to be accurate, NOBODY got the best out of Ricky (which then begs the question- does he have a best ?)

At the risk of repeating myself, the scorecard on our recruiting ranges from diabolic at worst to decidedly average at best- not one poster that I know of has given us a pass mark in recruiting. Then when some of our "mistakes" are shown the door some posters are up in arms.Go figure.
-
You can write queue posts all you like but that's where we differ in opinion. I would rather have no names play that the coaching panel believes may make the grade rather than hold onto players because we fear that there is no one else out there so mediocre is better than nothing at all. If Neeld and Co think that certain players do not fit in for reasons of committment, skill, discipline - whatever -I say let him recruit his Joe Blows. There is this ongoing debate about our recruiting -how poorly we have done.I reckon it is combination of recruiting and developing- either way our recruits havent come on. So now we should be scared to let them go because we dont know what we will get to replace them ? If we have recruited so poorly then fix it by getting rid of those we think are poor recruits. Neeld will live or die by his recruiting and development decisions

Interesting on Cook - shown nil but is still a baby in terms of KPP's. I have not agitated for specific players to be chopped but have agitated for not doing the same as we have always done-accept middle of the road. We only see the output on the field and dont get to see close up what a Neeld would see and hear from his players. He obviously has certain expectations and I would suggest that the likes of Cook has not only shown little onfield but also little off-fieled and probably has not made the noises that Neeld wants to hear. Whilst I may not agree on retention or deletion of specific players, I am happy for Neeld to gut this playing list and say to one and all - my way or the highway.

I am not sure about matey matey or we just didnt set the bar high enough - either way I like the dog wagging his own tail.
-
I understand this point but I think his approach earned respect from players like Jones who were prepared to embrace and he lost those who most had at least question marks over them adapting anyway. I will restate that I have no idea if this will be successful but I am happier with this approach than accepting more of the same as I believe we have for years.

On the flipside, I have worked in a place where the senior management was crap and as soon as these were removed by the CEO and replaced with either up and coming staff or better senior managers things turned quickly. The turnaround in the rest of the staff was amazing. If we keep doing things the same way we will keep getting the same result.
-
Take out the "bleed red and blue" and replace with "who's really prepared to go the extra mile to achieve personal and team excellence" and I am 100% in agreement.(this whole love for jumper doesnt cut it for me - Moloney loved the jumper and look how this has ended up)
-
and I hark back to what Neil Craig said at the beginning of the year- there will be players who will not be able to step up and this may not be a club for everyone and thats fine. We are not going to try to be. (or words to that effect) We have shown glimpses since 1964 but we have never reached any great heights. What we are seeing is an attempt to create a culture and a level of excellence that has been missing. Neeld may fail miserably but have we had more success by taking the safe approach?
-
I am not sure how deep this cull will go but I for one am sick and tired of treading water and going backwards but without taking any remedial action. I have heard for years "why dont we do this and why dont we do that" and basically we have gone with same ol' same ol'. Neeld on the other hand has walked in and said "no more".In my lifetime I have not seen a leadership group removed and half of them dropped during the season. I dont know if what Neeld is doing will bring success but previous safe coaches certainly didn't bring ultimate success. I believe we have set the bar way too low for too many years. I support Neeld not because I am 100% convinced he will be a good coach because I have been lured before by false dawns. I support Neeld because I believe he recognises that this [censored] attitude we have had for too many years has got us nowhere and he is prepared to take hard steps to try and correct it. More power to him !

I have a love for the club but can't get a kick to save myself. I want my players to be passionate about their football and team success but at the end of the day they are professionals who play for compensation. I can think of no more professional and committed footballer than Chris Judd and how he puts in 100% for his second club, Carlton. Rather than bleeding red and blue I would prefer a few more footballers that bleed 40 disposals a game at 80% efficiency.
