Relevance to this thread???? Yet another derailment.
-
I can’t get the video to load but 1/ this is a Hibberd / Leaver thread so the video has little or no relevance 2/ name me one player for whom one couldn’t find, were one of a sufficiently negative mindset / disposition, video of them making at least a few monumental stuff ups?

If PJ is to agree to an extension on f the NT deal, I believe one absolute stipulation must be that the Darwin game is always without question played prior to a bye. There can be no reason other than AFL bloody mindedness that we never get our bye after that game, and we are always stuffed after it. (I haven’t done any analysis of our opponents’ performances the following week) The Alice Springs game is really no more taxing, maybe less so, than a trip to Adelaide, Perth, Sydnet or Brisbane so a bye after that is no big deal.

And the Saints. Of course Essendon did by being so strong after being caught cheating ? You are surely old enough to know that fair and AFL scheduling are mutually exclusive. We are, again, absolutely screwed by the AFL re revenue and sponsorship opportunities by lack of prime time exposure. Sure every game needs to be won but we also are denied millions of dollars in lost opportunity. Except, picket, Carlton and Saints are gifted far more than they sew. Surely you mean the final siren on GF day.

Obviously we should have run a covert drug trial so we could be rewarded for being so resilient with prime time games, easy draw, and not having to follow the AFL ruling re clash jumpers. Typical weak act by Vlad and continued with Gil.

Ernest, I have never read your 1937 novel To Have and Have Not - was that a premonition about Jack Watts?
-
Great to see Jeff mentoring young Johnstone Many have written him off already, prior to his second preseason - hope he proves them wrong.

Sure it has been a problem, but to be truly successful one needs to be able to analyze and overcome such problems. It is not the same issue as unfairly having to play in Darwin (or CNS), get physically drained from that, then play a team that has just had a “normal” game the following week. That is the big killer.

^^ thanks for some informed comment

Is he a mastur in that field? I am just waiting for some of the naysayers on this board to read that as “definite evidence that he is going to demand a trade at seasons’ end to join his mate Ollie W at Port” ?

To me he seems to be another reasonably talented guy who likes being an AFL footballer but doesn’t want to put in the physical and mental effort, and the social sacrifices what is needed to be even an average 20-30th on a list, let alone a “star”. Maybe he could be a star but I doubt we ever will really know due to lack of total focused application. (Hope I am completely wrong and will apologise personally if he wins the 2018 Downlow)

I reckon he is only one good preseason from a breakthrough year

Maybe they have really shirt memories and only recall our totally pathetic “effort” (using the term really loosely) last time we met. -
? pretty good, like a one year drug ban and a damaged reputation? What would bad look like?

Drunkn - I guess someone who is at this stage very much a fringe player benefits from versatility: if he plays several rôles well it gives him more opportunity to fit in when opportunity knocks. Also the ability to carry several rôles seems a part of the Goodwin mantra. Looking forward to seeing how Dec comes on. I have never seen him play but by all accounts he is no shrinking violet and is hard at it, an attribute required in the modern game.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BALIC

?. Had I done so, it would at least give my psychiatrist something to work on to earn his money. -
Drunkn - just wondering where you observed him doing this......I don’t remember (maybe a senior moment) his ruck work being mentioned much in Casey reports.
-
Respectfully, I disagree with your point of view
-
You have picked the right word: toughness is by some equivalent to thuggery, which is not what we need. We need good players who are super competitive rather than unskilled thugs or soft hearted gazelles. If the gazelle is also competitive then all the better Goodwin and the recruiting and development team have that challenge: find, develop and maintain the blend.
-
I certainly agree with your view that the term “going to be a gun” is grossly overused - I clearly remember more than one poster (though I can’t remember who) throwing the term “gun” re the likes of Blease, Strauss, Maric, Morton, even Tynan and Taggert. Lets hold off such lauding until they actually do something eg Oliver, Viney

Could fit in quite well ?

Certainly without so many injuries to so many key players, some of which were early in crucial games, we just have to get more wins. And IF we had a dream run injury wise as did The Toiges then who knows? Continuity helps a hell of a lot. OMG ....... and who will be the new whipping boy on these fora?
