    LOW IQ  FOR ME

Most unimpressive coach in the game

Repeat history and expect a different outcome?

    = definition of insanity.

    Lets hope he's flexible.

The football world's microscope will be well and truly switched on next Tuesday night.

Like I said, the injured players returned to the field injured and significantly impaired, particularly Selwood.

In any event, the better team on the day even with 19 fit players was clearly Geelong. Had Max kicked the goal, it would have been a steal for us not a vindication of how superb a team we have become.

Falling over the line against Brisbane and defeating a hapless North would surely have given an indication as to where we are at. We are a 6-10 placed club.

The club has come a long way since the pre Roos years, but has under achieved after his departure. A first time coach, with no experience and a dogged mindset, has been a formula Melbourne has used before. Let's hope for a different outcome this time, there are 42 games left on a contract.

Good post H as H. That's my memory of the Geelong games as well.

I also was concerned after Brisbane,  but after the first 1/4 against North for the first time I sat back and felt the team was in control all day and confident of a win, although tricky at times. That instils some confidence that last week won't be a repeat, but it does get down to selection and match day coaching as well.

People are talking up North, yet they only beat the Blues in Hobart. Commentators are fickle and many its the first thing that comes into the head. Its a bit more complex than that.  If Viney and T Mac were available I would be very confident about Anzac Eve.

Its tricky drawing form lines on anyone exepcte GWS at present with confidence.

All i am saying is that the current Captain onfield right now is not the man for the job

I love Jones, but he aint the Captain this club needs.

Jones is too nice, i would never knock his endeavour

    Couldn't agree more. SWYL.

Jones is capable , and does, some fantastic things each week, but not since Todd Viney have we had a true on-ground leader.  Some say neitz was but the evidence of fragility over the early 2000's puts that in context.  Selwood, Hodge, Barassi, Riscuitto, Worsfold just never allowed nor accepted fragility.

Jack Viney's loss was immeasurable and I can't have him back soon enough to instail the missing component on ground.

    He is the key.

Ha ha, so Max Gawn not in the top 8 ruckmen in AFL. Now you have got that published why not move onto other sports and see what other insights you can share.

Re-read the article.  Its not overly analytical  and doesnt' rate the ruckmen.  Discusses a few but very superficially and lists the best 9

    Which includes Max.

Year 10 English Comprehension needed for this post. IMO

Salem?? He was involved in everything! I actually like where is form is heading.

Agree. He did a Jack Viney today.

In the HFF members side a hobbling north player received a decent side bump from Salem while waiting for the ball up and pushed him over just for fun after the Roo player just got to his feet.

    A mean streak?

True.  We will need to come prepared, not with the stubbornness of 'if we try this enough it should work at some point'.

Definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and expecting the same result.

Demons v Roos has to be even money at this stage.

one of the worst games i have ever seen.

The result makes the Lions game even more important this Sunday. Given the saints ( a rabble today ) beat the Lions by 4 goals last , what does that suggest would be an acceptable result Sunday?

If its under 6 goals I'd be worried.

I would guess they are taking it slowly with him - teeth, concussion last year. It is easy to underestimate how long it can get over having your wisdom teeth out. Think it’s good player management

Agree.  I've had the teeth out and there's an element of shock in the procedure.  He needs a couple of weeks minmum. He'll be there when the whips are cracking for sure. Just not yet.

Round 2 will show very quickly a number of things:

    Can coaching/ selection learn?

Was round 1 an aberration to the real norm?

Have we a sustainable game style ?( Personally i think there may be a fundamental flaw in thinking. The season is a marathon...yet we rely on a style played at frenetic pace...more like backing up 100m sprints. Its a long season.

    Who's in favour...who might not be ?

Yes it'll be only 2 games... astute observation can provide insight.

The Lions are actually a real danger game.

Im enthused by the optimism shown by some. Im not convinced weve got this right yet.

That was a pretty average effort all things considered.

Scoreboards seldom lie. Had the Cats kicked straighter we wouldn't have been in it.

    Go Dees

Fully Agree.  We only played Lions in Rd 22 last year, and should have creamed them but didn't. This was the game that cost the finals. Whilst there were good signs last week, the Lions are better also this year.  A narrow win will be seriously concerning.

A huge win, maybe not that much meaning - unless backed up again against the Roos.

I can’t see wholesale changes being made on the back of a close loss in round 1.

    I like Deespencers team.

That' s why there should be changes.  The loss wasn't close looking at the game and the stats.  We should have won by 6 goals.

Address the problems now, not at the end of round 4 when the team is 1 and 3 (and that's assuming a North win which is no certainty.

Good post webber. Agree with most of your concerns but not your conclusion. Barring major injuries i think we will comfortably make the 8.

Agree we are rubbish in the air. For me, of perhaps more concern is our woeful kicking (which of course exacerbates the marking issue).

In all seriousness not wanting to  open up the jack watts debate (wanted to keep him but respect and understand the decision and have moved on) but we will seriously miss his kicking skills, particularly his delivery inside 50. That said fritsch looks to have pretty good foot skills

Watts - the 2nd best outside 50 pass in the AFL.  Taylor Walker was No.1 last season. Crying shame to lose that key skill set, but he had to go I guess for the FD to make a statement on behaviour..

You're reading way too much into one game.  And especially the first game.

They'll learn much from this game, which is the first bit of relevant evidence they've been able to dissect for 6 months.

    Possibly and hopefully ProDEE.

I was interested to compare the attitudes of Sunday with the last game of 2017.  The team seemed on from the start this time .

But... lapse in 2nd  1/4 and my view of poor on-field/coaching box inability to recognise trend and address quickly remains.

This is the major flaw in the football dept.  The next 3 weeks will define the season.

Again... no Viney and I get worried.

Dees will lose to Geelong for the sole reason that they are not a united team based off the offseason camp fiasco.

    From about 10 minutes.

Interestingly, in the Age today, 10 out of 12 tip Melb. to win.  The only 2 for Geelong are the only ex-players - Carey and Bob Murphy.

What might they know others don't?

I trust their judgement more, but hoped to proven wrong. This story will run and run until Sept.

Viney's on-field leadership will be sorely missed.

Jake Niall is petty spot on with his assessment. Hibberd & Hunt give us elite half backs. Lever is an elite intercept mark. Oliver, Tyson, Viney & Jones are all fantastic inside mids. Petracca gives us forward X factor. Hogan & Mcdonald are solid key talls.

I think the missing piece is really that outside runner, which is why I think we should be going after Gaff at the end of this year.

The missing piece is between the ears and killer instinct

Goody said we r continuing to work on playing 4 quarters in regards to the 3rd quarter lapse.

Hopefully it doesn’t regularly occur like last season.

    Time will tell.

So who says they learnt from last year?

If this was a real match the team blew % building opportunity.

Unhappy.  Talk is cheap guys.  No wonder we aren't ' trusted ' yet.

I'm so glad firewall has blocked me from watching this and spared me 5 minutes of my life I will never get back!

Wrong call and have a listen.  Its an excellent summation between Robinson and David King.  Not to be trusted based on last year and selfishness. King has the faith and has a good logic, Robinson looks at history and who can blame him but still gives credit where its due.

The team owe us after sitting through the last game and talk is cheap.

I expect them to be at least 3 - 1 after four rounds if the team is serious about hurting after last year.

    Quote from the Age  article:

“ One of the aspects of returning to Victoria that excites him most is the chance to watch Romsey play on Saturdays when the Demons play a Friday night game”

Ho ho ho yuk yuk giggle. Somebody please tell the lad!

Romsey/Lancefied is a beautiful part of the Macedon ranges.  BUT, emphasis is on Jake wanting to come home AND he chose us, being able to go to any Vic club. Bummers would have been more convenient.

The other aspect of the article is just how stressed his life has been last few months, yet he turns up to training early in peak condition.

    Professional.  And only 21.

    Any word on their replacement?

I think the station recognises quality on-air talent. The best example is coaxing back Frances Leach who is able to converse on all sports and his highly articulate - a true broadcaster.  KB is another example of a true broadcaster who just happens to be an ex-champion.  Lyon and Watson also.

I see this as improving the stable, albeit its tough on those leaving and much sympathy to them. The Drive show was a standout weakness for the business.

I'd be mortified thought if Hird was appointed.
