  1. Looking at it from another angle. The following is a true statement; Since Craig McCrae took over at Collingwood, there is a ~5% chance per game that Brayden Maynard knocks someone unconscious in some form of 'spoiling attempt'. Maynard is only 26, so we can look forward to another four or five of these at least.
  2. None too soon. The scale of crowd violence at AFLW games is out of hand and I for one applaud the removal of the one specific portable lightweight and useful item which has been driving the rolling fracas. Would've thought frisbees were more of a concern at this time.
  3. He reminds me of the people on the yacht in the 1988 bicentennial documentary. Utterly full of themselves, meritless and deeply proud of the fact that they have acquired so much while not having any merits, and entirely lacking self-awareness.
  4. 12 months ago the talk about Ashton Moir was 'possible number 1' and all the top pick hype about freakish athleticism and good kicking off both feet. Clearly something has gone wrong this season and he's now barely scraping into top 30 lists, if that. On the face of it, a 188cm, skilled and unpredictable forward/half forward would seem like a great selection in the 20s for us, but clearly there's a lot to know. Anyone have insight into what stalled for Moir and how he might go in future?
  5. A subpoena regarding backroom communications related to the decision would be a gold mine, I suspect.
  6. My concern is that if everyone played like Brayden Maynard there wouldn't be anyone left to play. Fact is, he knocks someone unconscious almost exactly once 1 per 100 one-percenters. Maybe he thinks that's why they are called that? There are 30 players who have had more than 100 1%ers this season, and another 80 with at least 50 1%ers. So that's 70 hospitalisations caused by barely a 100 players. Even the lowest-ranked players for one-percenters would be knocking someone out once every five seasons. If everyone played like Brayden Maynard, one in three AFL players would be knocked out and hospitalised with concussion each season.
  7. Okay, so in the wild world of quantum draft picks, I have a fantasy that has come back now that Curtin seems to have slipped ever so slightly down the order and might make it to our first pick. Add a little bit of ducking and weaving to get a second early pick and aim for a complete restock of our talls. Curtin at approximate pick 5, then O'Sullivan at around 9. Both, but particularly Curtin, have been noted as versatile and able to play forward, which helps both our options and theirs, and makes for a very interesting mix with these two and Petty as our long term core of talls. (Kalana White being named All-Australian under-16s center-half-back a couple of months ago - and already 197cm! - also helps with my succession anxiety) Adding a little bit of run with Brown Jr. as a fairly cheap father-son is a handy bonus, and I suspect we'll have at least one more pick on top of those three which should come before the F/S selection if we're smart.
  8. 2022 https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/03/08/maynards-appeal-swiftly-rejected-by-afl-tribunal/ Maynard’s attempt to spoil GWS’ Daniel Lloyd in a pratice match was not looked upon favourably ... careless conduct, high impact and high contact and offered him a two-game suspension. Lloyd was briefly knocked unconscious by the spoil and was diagnosed with a concussion in the aftermath.
  9. This is going to come back in exactly the same way that letting Barry Hall off for his punch on Matt Maquire in a final came back to hit Brent Staker.
  10. It keeps having the stink of the domestic violence perpetrator. Maynard the routine thug with a long record of low acts and cheap shots that could have caused an injury like this at any time. He's got a crowd of 'mates' who cheer him on every time. When it finally happens there is a moment where he and the mates actively celebrates the 'successful' hit, and then reality kicks in and he goes into high-speed excuse mode 'oh it was just one time and it was an accident and they also contributed to it I really love them and I'm really upset about it all please stop victimising me' and the mates all rally around him for his record of tough-but-fair because 'there hasn't been an injury like this before. Followed up with the thoughtless and rote-learned sorry ritual, 'I brought choccies, luv, you can have them as soon as they've removed the wireframe from your jaw'. Seriously, bringing wine to someone with severe concussion is a special touch which just emphasizes how much the apology was about the look. It'll be a very short space of time before we see anyone who is 'still hanging on to that past issue' being mocked and sidelined in the media. The other analogy would be to the chronic dangerous driver being shocked that they killed a couple of children after spinning out of control, and begging for sympathy because it was a 'freak accident' that had no control over.
  11. Yeah, that's a suspension offence on it's own normally, but, hey, we're basically watching a performance art version of 'ex-cop, with mates at the local station, getting accused of domestic violence'.
  12. The thing about an old boys club is you don't even need to make the call.
  13. I just acted on the impulse to post that image in reply to a bunch of the Filth's fluff stories on Twitter. Doesn't do anyone any good but maybe I'll get blocked by Collingwood on Twitter, which is something we can all aspire to.
  14. I particularly like that he reinvented himself as his body limited his options. A dashing All-Australian and then a determined premiership player. Good effort.
  15. Let's see how our better fitness and maturity works out in the final quarter. Kate Hore currently on pace for the highest rated individual game (133 AF points at 3/4 time, chasing 184) of all time. Why not? Looking to see a bit more involvement from Alyssa Bannan who hasn't been heavily involved and has been a bit sketchy when she was involved.
  16. Feel like Shelley Heath is being forced to do to much so far this quarter - turning up everywhere and maybe that's because a few others aren't getting involved as much as they should.
  17. The scoreboard says we are smashing them to pieces and I think the scoreboard is flattering to GWS.
  18. Would have to be one of the best quarters of anyone's career in AFLW!
  19. On a lighter note... it was Brayden Maynard who stood the mark when Dom Sheed kicked a certain excellent goal once upon a grand final. So, he'll always have that.
  20. This thread is NUMBERWANG.
  21. This post objects to Port Adelaide fans!
  22. Yep, just adding to the sentiment to keep the feel-good thread going. I particularly like that he persevered through multiple periods where it would have been quite acceptable to pack it in and find a less emotionally demanding career. His current form and finals appearance are character rewarded and that's always good to see in any context.
  23. The pre-finals bye makes an interesting difference to the value of the week off, and yes, even prior to that in 20 years there were five different QF losing teams who clawed their way to the premiership. Plus throw in the Dogs doing it from the bottom half of the 8. Let's just look at the most likely scenario. To be premiers in 2023 we need to beat Carlton, Brisbane and Collingwood. Fascinatingly, we're now 1 win 1 loss this season against all three of those teams! Total margin from those six games is... (11, 17, 4, 1, 4, 7) 44 points, or 7.3 per game. It is absolutely knife-edge stuff and if you think it can't be done please stay away from the club until it is over!
  24. Mess with everyone's head by getting free agent McKay from North to play forward.
