  1. A little better that quarter but the Cats are still well in control and lead 7.6.48 to 4.6.30 at the half.
  2. It's been a poor start for the Scorpions. They trail 1.1.7 to Geelong 5.2.32 at quarter time.
  3. The Casey Scorpions started slowly and lost their reserves game against an accurate Northern Bullants by 20 points at Visy Park today. He received a yellow card and was sent from the field with three minutes left in the match for "scrapping with a Noble Park opponent who was also yellow carded and headed for the bench with a bloodied mouth." Fevola kicked three goals two behinds.
  4. We don't like taking advantage of the misfortunes of others but I suppose the news about Geelong's three outs - Cats Trio Out can only help the Casey cause.

  6. Interesting to note that Brendan Fevola who will apparently be playing for Narre Warren this week did not make the Casey list. Obviously, there's a need to see how things pan out for him over there before he can really take on a VFL team. Let's hope that Brendan can sort himself out and then be in a posiiton to make good decisions about his future.

  8. There's an article by the aptly named Brendan Casey (no relation ) in this week's Berwick Leader - SCORPIONS SKIPPER TO MISS OPENER Some excerpts that might be of interest: Kyle Matthews suffered a hamstring injury late in the third quarter. Ben Waite looked agile and potent in the forward half all game but will miss the first four matches of the season due to suspension rolling over from the last game in 2010. Brendan Fevola played his first game in Casey colours on the weekend, having a gallop in the reserves. He only played just over two quarters and didn't have a lot of opportunities as Port Melbourne thumped Casey by 73 points. "We didn't deliver the ball well to Fev throughout the time he was on," Gotch said. "He has got a bit of work to do to get his touch and fitness back, but if he keeps progressing and doing all the team things, we won't hesitate to put him in the senior side." Casey opens its 2011 season this Saturday night against Geelong at Casey Fields. Meanwhile the Cranbourne Weekly is all over the Fevola story - BRENDAN FEVOLA SET FOR VFL ROUND ONE START BRENDAN Fevola could be a shock round-one starter for the Casey Scorpions after the troubled full forward made it through his first game of football since round 18 last season.
  9. To be clear, while Max Gawn's game was impressive and full of promise, I'm not suggesting he will necessarily get games at Melbourne this year. As a big man, he's still 2-3 years away IMO but he'll be very good when he gets there.
  10. An experienced and well drilled Port Melbourne overpowered Casey Scorpions when they booted 7 goals to 2 in the third term at Casey Fields. The first half was close and Casey had its chances to go ahead late in the second term but some lapses up forward allowed Port to seize the initiative before the main break. The Scorps battled hard to narrow the margin in the last but Port held reasonably firm to run out winners by 21 points. Casey named two of the three Melbourne emergencies for tomorrow's game - Jake Spencer and Matthew Warnock leaving James Strauss as the likely Demon to come into the side if it becomes necessary. The general feeling is that Strauss might come in if Jack Trengove's ankle doesn't come up. Otherwise, Ricky Petterd is the likely. nominee as the club's first substitute under the new system. There was no appearance from Lucas Cook, Jeremy Howe or Tom McDonald. No explanations and none of the above were on the latest official injury list (for what that's worth) although Howe might have sustained some sort of minor injury in last week's practice match against Frankston. Of the Demons - • Matthew Bate - a bit scrappy at the start but got his act together in the second half. However, needs to be more consistent over a whole game to gain promotion. • Sam Blease - sort of grew on me as the game went on. It still shows that Blease has effectively had two seasons of little or no football after his terrible foot injury and that he needs to fully regain his self-confidence to use his pace and to execute the skills that got him drafted in the top 20 two years ago. I believe he'll get there eventually and should get some games in the AFL this year as a running back. • Michael Evans - had sone very good passages of play and displayed a bit of toe. A work in progress who could surprise. • Max Gawn - is starting to show why his was drafted. His ruckwork against a couple of experienced campaigners was excellent and he took some strong grabs. Gaining confidence on the comeback trail after a long absence with injuries. • Jordan Gysberts - got lots of the ball and used it well. Given Melbourne's midfield injury woes he could well get the opportunity to step up sooner rather than later. • Cameron Johnson - a likely type who still has a lot to learn. • Michael Newton - good game on return from injury booting three goals and having a hand in a couple of others. Having been promoted off the rookie list, it's clear that the football department has faith in him and if he keeps this up then he should get further opportunities. • Daniel Nicholson - starting to pick up the tempo of play and of what's required at this level. Had a couple of nice runs but there were a couple of turnovers as well. On the whole, he looks a possible player. • Jake Spencer - a reasonable game in the ruck and kicked a couple of goals when resting forward. Although not a great game, he did what was necessary most of the time whether in ruck or up forward. • Austin Wonaeamirri - did the occasional brilliant thing but probably didn't get involved as much or exert anywhere near as much influence on the game as he is capable of doing. • Matthew Warnock - steady for most of the game except when turned inside out by the fast leading Patrick Rose for a period in the third quarter. Have seen better games from him. Of the VFL listed players, the two leaders in Kyle Matthews and James Wall were great. I liked the performances of Rian McGough and Tim Mohr and newcomer Mitch Gent was promising. I noticed that a few regulars in Danny Nicholls, Matt Fieldsend and Michael Stockdale were missing from the small man brigade and their return will only improve team depth. If they can get Fev's head and body right, the team could pose serious problems to the opposition in 2011.
  11. Casey Scorpions 4.1.25 5.5.35 7.7.49 13.9.87 Port Melbourne 5.1.31 7.6.48 14.9.93 16.12.108 Goals Casey Scorpions Newton Wall 3 McGough Spencer 2 Evans Patti Waite Port Melbourne Rose 4 Burstin 3 Dwyer 2 Cain Fanning Keely Langford McMahon, Scipione Valenti Best for Casey were Gysberts, Wall, Newton and Matthews
  12. Three quarter time: Port Melbourne 14.9.93 leading Casey 7.7.49 Jordan Gysberts not far off AFL selection. Matthew Bate picked up his game that quarter. I wasn't here for the early game but Fev was apparently ordinary getting only three or four touches. He's probably not used to playing that early - I believe that on most days he's studying the fields at that time. Final score in the reserves - Port Melbourne 15.20.110 defeated Casey Scorpions 5.6.36 Anyway, there's a feeling around the ground that "no Fev, no Casey" and I believe the scoreboard attendant agrees with me because there's no mention of Casey or their score on the scoreboard.
  13. Half Time: Casey 5.5.35 to Port Melbourne 7.6.48 There are 11 Demons in the team - Matthew Bate Sam Blease Michael Evans Max Gawn Jordan Gysberts Cameron Johnson Michael Newton Daniel Nicholson Jake Spencer Austin Wonaeamirri and Matthew Warnock Jordan Gysberts is probably the pick of the Demons out there accumulating possessions in the middle. Juice Newton good in his comeback with a couple of goals. Max Gawn doing well in the ruck and around the ground. Matthew Bate doing ok but a bit fumbly. Austin Winaeamirri working hard but hasn't has enough of the ball. Dan Nicholson has done a few nice things.
  14. It's close to the halfway mark of the second term and Port lead by a goal 6.2.38 to 5.2.32.
  15. A good hitout for the Scorps but certainly nothing that much against a team with limited playing depth. Ricky Petterd and perhaps Luke Tapscott to get an AFL guernsey next week but little more. There's a glowing report on the game here on the AFL site but really, a number of MFC players need at least a season at this level for their development before venturing on to a higher level. Lynden Dunn did not play after developing "hamstring tightness" and is in doubt for Round 1 v Swans. It was good to see Kyle Matthews back with the Scorps after his year in the wilderness. He and James Wall are likely to be the team's stalwarts in 2011. Best of the recruits for Casey were Kieran McShane (Box Hill Hawks) and Aidan Lindsay (Gippsland Power). I disagree strongly with those who maintain the Demons should go it alone. They need to word together to provide a good environment for the two clubs to work and prosper together in this developing region in outer Melbourne. I'm unfazed about the Fevola controversy and am bemused by Frankston suddenly coming into the picture. It's in his interests to be in a team where the ball is going to be delivered to him regularly and efficiently. Won't happen at the Dolphins. Frankston coach Simon Goosey's remarks about Casey playing 16 Demons and only 6 Casey listed players are way off line too. Never happened in the past - the most last year was about 13/9 early in the season before injuries really set in. In a bad year for injury like 2009 or even 2010, a stand alone MFC would barely function and would be a nightmare to administer. I'd like to see the Demons promote more depth and strength into the Scorpions, not less, for the benefit of the entire alignment. That said, I would say whichever team gets Fev will be an improver if the man can overcome his off field issues. To underline the opposition's lack of depth, the Scorpion reserves won in a canter. Casey Scorpions 24.24.168 defeated Frankston 5.4.34
  16. Scorpions with pretty much a young side against the Zebras were overwhelmed in the first half but came back under the agency of Austin Wonaeamirri who showed some rare form at times around goal. However, you don't get up often from a 50 point half time deficit. Casey missed a focal point up forward and eventually might find their recruit from Brisbane handy once he gets back from holidaying in Las Vegas (provided he can afford the return ticket). Jake Spencer and Max Gawn won the ruck duels but apart from that, not a great deal to report. Casey Scorpions 12.5.77 lost to Sandringham Zebras 19.16.130 The reserves won their match of which the feature was the return to football after 12 months out of Kyle Matthews.
  17. I couldn't make it down to Pakenham for yesterday's game due to work commitments but hope to get some info during the week. All I managed to get was the scores and the fact that my correspondent thought Casey moved the ball well, looked slick and pacy. With Melbourne's injury list and the fact that several players were rested today, It's hard to imagine that many MFC listed players took part today although there was some word around the traps that Max Gawn would line up for the Scorpions and play perhaps half a game. On my reckoning there would be very few Demons in line for a run with Casey - possibly Sam Blease, Cameron Johnston and Kelvin Lawrence. On the other hand, I know Box Hill had several Hawthorn listed players available including 2008 premiship team members Stephen Gilham, Brent Guerra and Jordan Lewis. Edit: I have learned from a Box Hill source that Max Gawn and Sam Blease did play. Won in the ruck against much shorter opposition (Max Bailey and Paul Johnson who has committed to Box Hill even if not rookie listed were both injured. Sam Blease showed out in the first half but was probably rested after that.
  18. Final scores received from Pakenham Casey Scorpions 1.0.6 6.7.43 9.9.63 12.9.81 Box Hill Hawks 5.4.34 6.5.41 8.8.56 10.11.71 Good win after a slow start against the wind. Reserves Casey Scorpions 0.3.3 3.3.21 5.5.35 9.6.60 Box Hill Hawks 4.3.27 7.10.52 9.15.69 12.20.92 Considering the numbers of AFL listed players available to the respective clubs, it was a reasonable effort from the reserves who should be greatly strengthened over coming weeks. The club hopes to have Casey Fields back up to scratch by round 1.
  19. Personally not my cup of tea but having someone like Fevola at Casey would be pure gold in gate takings as far as the Scorps are concerned. Casey Scorpions offer to help Fevola find sting
  20. The club's first practice match next Saturday (5th March) v Box Hill Hawks has been moved to Toomuc Reserve, Princes Highway, Pakenham so as to help bring the home ground at Casey Fields up to best condition for the season proper. The Reserves commence at 11am and Seniors at 1.30pm. The following week's practice match (12th March)v Sandringham will now be played at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham. Reserves commence at 10am and Seniors at 1pm.
  21. Nice article in yesterday's Sunday Herald Sun which didn't make all editions: FOOTY IS BACK ON THE BRAIN
  22. Courageous Casey skipper Kyle Matthews is on the comeback trail and while he has been impressive to date, coach Brad Gotch says there are still some hurdles ahead - VFL: Casey Scorpions keep fingers crossed over skipper "It was a serious head knock and until we get to the practice games we won't know. We'll keep our fingers crossed that everything is all right." Defender Michael Stockdale, who missed the second-half of last season with a knee injury, is also on the way back to boost the club's playing stocks.
  23. TEEN TALENT ON TAP FOR SCORPIONS Great story in the Cranbourne Leader on Casey's young signings for season 2011. There are no big names but the club has a bag of players from the TAC Cup including Gippsland Power 2010 grand final players Aidan Lindsay, Tom Corry and Ryan Pendlebury along with Dandenong Stingrays Mitch Gent, Nathan Allen and Daniel Harrison, and Eastern Ranges pair Luke McKenna and Luke Hill. Twelve Scorpions turned out in Melbourne's intra-club match at Gosch's Paddock last Thursday. They were Matt Fieldsend, Michael Riseley, Gus Patti, Luke McKenna, Luke Bee-Hugo, Jed Costigan, Tim Costigan, Aaron Purves, Wade Lees, Luke Hill, Mark Weekes and Mark Todd. Some pen pictures from coach Brad Gotch in the article: Mitch Gent (Dandenong Stingrays): "Looks impressive. He's a midfield type who just knows how to play. Looks good with his hands, good thinker, neat kick. A lot of upside. He's going to push (for senior selection) right from the start. He's had a setback with tonsillitis so that might put him back two weeks." Nathan Allen (Dandenong Stingrays): "I watched him play in the preliminary for the Stingrays last year and was impressed. He's pretty quick, reads the play, gets on the end of the ball, uses it well. He's set his sights on having a good year." Daniel Harrison (Dandenong Stingrays): "He's a big guy, 197cm, 198cm and very mobile. I've seen him ruck but we've got to teach him some key-position play because at his size it will be hard to come up against guys that are 203cm. A lot of potential." Blake Carew (Gippsland Power): "Played for us as a 23rd man against Werribee last year and he did really well. He played half forward and a bit through the midfield and he put a lot of pressure on and was neat with his kicking and decision-making. Has to work on his fitness levels." Aidan Lindsay (Gippsland Power): "Also had a game with us a 23rd player. He can play midfield, half forward, wing and works hard. Couldn't fault his approach. Has an awkward kicking style, which we're working on." Tom Corry (Eastern Ranges): "Small defender who sets up the play. Has really good skills and knows how to use the footy. Has attacking tendencies. He's a bit like 'Stocky' (Michael Stockdale)." Ryan Pendlebury (Gippsland Power): "Was on the verge of being drafted last year but he didn't finish the season off well. They found out he had glandular fever and a hip complaint. Had a really good game for us last year." Luke McKenna (Eastern Ranges): "Played as a key defender for Eastern last year and was third in the best and fairest. Looks like he's a very good defensive player who can shut opponents down. Is quite athletic and likes to have a dash but his kicking is a bit ugly at times." Luke Hill (Eastern): "Only played the last six games for Eastern last year. He was playing local footy when they spotted him. He's 196cm and pretty raw. Just needs to be educated a bit and probably has to find that next level of intensity."
  24. I'm not sure if this was mentioned at last night's AGM but for those who pay rates in the City of Casey, there was a little suprise today when they got their rate bills. A special glossy City of Casey edition of Heartbeat with information about MFC activities, a fixture and info about membership - good stuff and well done Demons.
  25. Luke should be a player of interest. He's a 20 year old half forward who hails from Darwin and came down last year to play for a rejuvenated Garfield in the Ellinbank League. Now he's at a VFL club in a praccy match with AFL players.
