  1. Hindsight, the favourite pastime of Demonland. Similar to likes of Nat Fyfe, we weren't the only ones to overlook Wines. It's a situation where we can only give credit to their respective teams recruiting decisions. But comparisons after one season are premature and will only give a distorted result, particularly considering Toumpas was recovering from an injury when drafted. If we've learned anything from the past few seasons, it's that it's been our development that has let us down. It doesn't matter where a player has been picked in the draft, they generally don't develop themselves. Let's revisit this after a season or two under Roos and see where we stand.
  2. What an incredible day. The appointment of Roos is a huge step forward for our great club, not just because we've managed to get such a quality person as head coach, but it means we've got the caliber of people within our organisation to attract such a highly regarded coach. I'm beginning to remember what it's like to be a truly proud Dees supporter. Welcome aboard Roos and well done MFC.
  3. I listened to Rawlings on ABC radio pregame. He stated that he is still contracted for next year and expects to still be around. Not sure of the contract situations of the other assistant coaches though.
  4. You're probably right, I must do some more reading into the subject. My frustration probably just comes from government overspending and debt, which has become epidemic the world over, and has burdened countries and their people for most likely several generations to come.
  5. I think that's a point that gets lost in a lot of the speculation about whether or not the players took a banned substance or not. By not keeping records of what was taken, how much and by whom, they have absolutely failed in their duty of care to the players. They can say that there are little to no side effects to the drugs that where used, but that to me largely irrelevant. Even legally prescribed drugs by doctors are documented as to get a picture of patients history, the Essendon players now have a gaping hole in their medical history and the club has opened themselves up to being liable for possible future problems.
  6. The thing that get's me is, why is our government obligated to borrow money as opposed to printing money against capital works? We've always had the facility to do this and presumably things like the NBN could be completed without having to borrow money.
  7. How can they conceivably evaluate the efficacy of a program without keeping records? I don't think delusional does it justice. I half expect them to say that they did keep records, but the dog ate them.
  8. I agree that both sides are a joke. We've heard ad nauseum about the boats, border protection and the hundreds of millions it will costs us. But we hear little of our farmers, retailers, manufacturers (other than the car industry) et al that have beeing doing it tough for years, that will continue without support. There's not a level playing field for Australian businesses, we don't hold imports, pariculalrly food, to the same standards. And as far as giving retailers a little help with charging GST and duties on personally imported goods, well, it's just too hard for them (And no I'm not impying that it will instantly make our retailers more cometitive, but it will at least level the playing field somewhat).

As always the player movements have been frenetic in the off season. A full wrap up of the team changes so far can be found here. The big news being that the Dwightmare has ended and Howard has moved on from the Lakers and signed with Houston. His pairing with Harden should make them an interesting team to watch in the coming seasons. The Nets continue to throw around money at an absurd rate, picking up Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry and AK47. As a consequence their luxury tax bill (about $87 million) will be larger than every other teams normal payroll. They'd want to see some bang for their buck! The Knicks have also added some pieces, they've stacked their front court by adding Andrea Bargnani and Metta World Peace. But with a back court of Felton and JR Smith, I'm not convinced they've improved in the right areas. The Clippers roster hasn't changed much, but they've trade in Doc Rivers as coach which could make all the difference to them. Bogut, after his name was mentioned in trade rumours, should be happy with the Warriors pick up of Igoudala, even if it's at the expense of losing Jarrett Jack. And my team, the Pistons, seem to have done well by picking up Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith. Most of the big names have been accounted for so far, with the one of the few remaining questions being where will Greg Oden (former No. 1 pick by Portland) land? An interesting season coming up.
  11. I finally got a decent recommendation from Spotify. Air. Or have I taken it the wrong way? Nevertheless they've got some great music. Jack Jack's Jazz 4.4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiglRCekcJ0
  12. Slightly off topic, the MFC website is running a survey with the chance to win a once off MFC fixie. Get on board all you cycling fans.
  13. It's certainly disappointing to hear O'Grady's confessions. It was a bit spineless of him to wait until he had announced his retirement and was named as a suspected doper. He had a chance to step forward, admit his guilt and take whatever sanction came his way. Obviously his reputation is tarnished either way, but an open admission of guilt without duress is the way forward for the sport, for the greater good.
  14. Vuelta a Espana will be on SBS. Not sure if they'll have the whole tour, but they've previously showed about 8 of the stages plus highlights for everyday
  15. Great thread and a great tour. Well done everyone and well done Froome, a deserved winner. Richie Porte was a rock for Froome. Our next big hope? The highlight for me was definitely Quintana. He was probably fortunate that Valverde was a victim of the crosswinds early in the tour as it meant that he basically had the entire support of team Movistar. But you could see Quintana learning as he went, was in a few breakaways and jumped too early on a few of the hills. Showed a lot of maturity on the last stage to take the win. He's going to be someone to watch for many years to come. I know we're all disappointed with Cadel, but before we right him off let's remember that he came 3rd in the Giro 6 odd weeks ago. I think he's still got some decent performances in him. Viva le Tour
  16. It was weak. A 20 second penalty. There is mention of them having trouble getting their car within reach of the riders due to the crowd, so there is a bit of a grey area.
  17. What a stage. Froome showing signs of being human, started to crack on the final ascent. Where would he be without Porte? Quintana into 3rd, not far behind Contador now. Aussie rider Adam Hansen enjoys a donated beer. Priceless!
  18. I think the French have gone a bit bonkers on this stage. Going up the same hill twice? They're trying to kill the riders. It'll be interesting to see if there's any rain for this stage, in particular for the descent, could make it quite treacherous. Cards, I think Cadel was taking it easy last night. He's out of GC contention, the course was still wet when he headed out, so there was really no chance of him winning. I hope it means he pushes for a stage win in the next few days. Porte was another that seemed to be taking it easy (although he wasn't as far off the pace as Cadel).
  19. Maybe the rarefied atmosphere of the alps explains P & P's form? I guess it may come down to penalty? What is the penalty for contravening these rules and will it make any difference to the standings? It may just be a monetary fine and have no bearing on the results. But a follow up from the commentators/journos would have been nice. I think the sleep deprivation is starting to get to me. At least I thought it was when I saw an ad during the telecast. Is it just me, or is that a peculiar ad? Contador looked strong last night, I guess he's just got to keep pushing Froome to see if he will crack. Makes for an interesting few stages coming up.
  20. Not a lot of action on this stage, so I decided to look up the rules. Tour de France Regulations That's what I basically heard the commentators say during the climb, though I don't know if the race directors/stewards actually decided to vary the 20k to finish limit on Mont Ventoux. So, who knows?
  21. I can understand their frustration, they're being judged on cycling's past. But as our ex coach said a few times "It is what it is". Another good article along similar lines from the SBS website Can We Believe You?
  22. I did hear the commentators say last night that they adjust the rules for those sort of hill climb finishes, 10ks was the cut off last night so it was legit. Credit where it's due, Froome was awesome, but it's cycling and comparisons will be made... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXPXHK7I1iQ Contador was almost comical last night, he tried to go with Froome, got left behind and ended up being caught by his team mate
  23. Another great stage last night. I get the feeling that Froome is one of the few riders that is actually in form, but beyond that, his performances are quite unbelievable. If it where any other sport he'd be lauded as an absolute champion, but given what's happened in cycling, particularly over the last 12 months, it's understandable that there's some questioning his performances. Given that it was such a landmark stage (the longest stage, Bastille Day, Mont Ventoux, 100th Tour) I'd like to see them come out with something a bit different. So I'm hoping to see Froome out in a polka dot yellow jersey. Let's make it memorable. As an aside, is anyone else disappointed that Jack Bauer is doing so poorly? Or at least a little surprised that he's a New Zealander?
  24. Certainly Evans and Schleck still have everything to prove. I can't really see them being overly aggressive, they just have to be opportunistic and take whatever presents itself. IRW, what's your take on Mollema, Ten Dam and the Belkin team? I haven't being paying much attention to them.
