Since you asked so nicely ...

There was absolutely no need for Goodwin & to a lesser extent Jones to talk his value down early in the piece. They gained nothing from doing it, and really messed up our capacity to negotiate a higher pick.

Where was Mahoney at that time? The FD took ages to work out its narrative, and then its negotiating position, and by then it was almost too late, a lot of damage has been done. Even some "Watts needs to go" posters wondered why we were talking his value down so much.

In answer to your question about "how else you can do it":  how about something neutral that aims at the ball (i.e. the issue) and not the man (Watts)? Such as: "Our game next year is going to be much more focussed on contested ball. Watts has great talents, but not in the areas that our team will be moving into. We've therefore encouraged him to seek other options where his talents will be a better fit for their style of play."

    Pick 15, please.

[P.S. My opinion (not fact) for why Goodwin & Jones were so heavy on criticising Watts initially was that they were struggling to convince the playing group of the strength of their reasons for pushing him out. I can't imagine who else the would have been trying to convince that "Watts is bad". If my opinion has any truth whatsoever, I very much doubt whether what anybody has said since would have made the slightest bit of difference. Which would be grounds for concern.]

Goodwin didn't talk his value down

we were never getting a first rounder for a guy who everyone knows doesn't get out of second gear unless he wants to.

The coach and captain don't need to convince anyone. Jones, for all his faults, works his backside off and Watts, with all his talent, doesn't. Goodwin made it clear what he expects and Watts can't get there.

not much choice after the way this game has been played.

To say it was amateur is a gross understatement.

Remind me never to ask the MFC list management team to negotiate on my behalf.

Explain to us how else you can do it

The point's fairly obvious to me

So we pay a guy good coin to play for Casey and list clog instead of letting him go to another club which might be just what he needs to reach his potential. If you're a Watts fan your idea is just plain stupid.

Track record poor? ONE pre season out of 9. Jack ALLEGEDLY underdone in his preparation. If this was true he served his punishment and played bloody good football until injured. Too good to give away. Can't you see class in a player mate? Jack provides the polish and finish we require for greater success.

Jacks a culture sore and you can't see it

Because I believe his best footy with a SUCCESSFUL team is in front of him

Capitals for stressing a point, not yelling

The test of a person is how they respond to adversity. Jacks failed the test

According to the gospel of the FD (who some believe, 'in Goody we trust'), not the much harder challenge of bringing out the best in ALL players

But, these are old arguments - I'm done

Today I'm happy the club netted Lever, next week, I'll cry when Wattsy leaves - but, life goes on

Why will you cry when an under performer with s track record of not preparing or working hard enough to get the best out of himself is finally let go Do you want success or pretty party boys to follow

This trade is essentially backing in the current group of players and coaching team. If we finish lower than 4th we've absolutely gifted Adelaide two good young players for one.

This is the epitome of the club drinking its own bathwater. I don't mind it, and good to see the club backing itself in. But gee, it's an immense risk.

Explain to all of us how getting Lever is an immense risk

This is why I keep harping on about failed messiah issues.  How many players does any club have, particuarly a mediocre one like ours (cum basket case) that dominate games?  The number is countable on the fingers of a mutilated hand. You don't sack the other players in the squad.

If Watts was just accepted as a mediocre player who can play lots of roles we wouldn't be having this debate.   We may still support the FD in thinking his best value is a trade or in our usual know-all wisdom say they are wrong, or at least worry that they are wrong (ie. me), but the debate would not be this bitter and at times ludicrous on both sides.

Obviously you are not in the FD of the Cats, Swans, Port.....

But of course staying wth the Demons (as distinct from being recruited by another club) is now close to impossible.

Well the Cats offered a pick in the 40's so they weren't that keen, nor did they want to pay him what he earns at Melbourne. Might want to hunt down a relevant point

So no new names popped up today, no doubt that rumour we were into a gun mid was total rubbish.

Not rubbish I was told we were into a mid who the club rated highly, the term gun appeared through Chinese whispers, Balic was the player

Wasn't your mail about a mid from another vic club?

I was just told we were getting s mid and that the club rated him highly, hence I guessed it was a biggish fish. We've other caught a carp of a marlin

Keep in mind. Mr Watts has a contract. He can scupper anything he wishes.

So well thought through Melbourne !!!

Baltic was my mans mail. Several clubs rate him very highly, including ours. Apparently was once seen as a top 10 pick. Will need a big pre season and possibly 2 to get to standard. Some concerns over perceived lack of work rate. I personally no nothing about him

I suspect Roos treated him like a human being in 2014 and 2015 also, but it's possible you're right and he didn't want to expose him too early.

Alas, I fear you and I will remain on a different page re young Jack.  As Roos alluded to in the Detales podcast, there are part-time players at most clubs, including the MFC, and clearly Jack is in that category.

Mahoney made it clear that Watts hasn't been doing the extras that some others players do in order to be the best player they can be.  Put simply, Watts is "half dedicated".  I know Dees supporters love making excuses for him, but I'm not one of those.  I'm big on "personal responsibi

Also, while others laud his 2016, it was a minimum standard for a player of his talent in my eyes.  That's not to say I wasn't pleased he'd had a breakout year, but he's capable of much more.

Dustin Martin isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but the effort and sacrifices he's made to become the best player in the league has clearly been immense.

Does anyone think Jack has gone close to emulating such efforts ?

You may respond, but I may not, as I realise discussions on Watts are futile. Thanks for the conversation.

We're finally expecting and demanding high performance from our players and when one won't fall into line so we offer him for trade you carp on about professionalism. FFS you can't have it both ways

    How about this:

Melb lose picks 10, 27, 45  + Watts to Gold Coast and receive picks 2 and 24.

Adelaide lose pick 52 + Jake Lever to Melbourne and receive our 2018 first-rounder + pick 24.

Melbourne draft Cam Rayner this year at pick 2.

We win the next five flags.

    I'm a genius.

    Cheers.

Edit : To your initial question, Adelaide would already have their first-round pick for next year. My proposal is based on the idea that Adelaide may want another first-rounder for next year rather than ours from this year given the rumoured strength of next years crop.

Turkey as opposed to genius but I do love turkey
