  1. A contested posession that is turned over is as useless as a contested posession that is turned over. An efficient CP however will always be of more value than an efficient UP. Contested means that you have defeated an opponent to the footy. The opponent is with you and that opponent is accountable. Uncontested means that your opponent is not with you. Whilst your opponent is not with you he is able to affect a contest in another part of the ground reducing your ability to attack. = CP > UP
  2. Just a stupid post for someone who should know better.Magner is a poor user which is nearly as useless as a good user who doesn't get it. Of course you need to be efficient at both, but how do you propose to get the football into your hands to start a chain of possession? Still cannot believe that reasonable people can make a debate of this. It is footy kindergarten stuff. I tell you what. I will stick all only contested ball winners in my team at 50% de and you can have all uncontested players in your team with 100% de. Reckon my boys will win. http://blog.tomwaterhouse.com/afl/afl-knowledge-010812/
  3. If uncontested possessions were as important as contested ones Joel Bowden would have been lauded as a great player. A chain of posessions that good sides create originate largely from a contest. If you believe that uncontested posessiion is as important as contested posession then you should take it up with our current coach. He will tell you that you are wrong. It is so incredibly obvious.
  4. We were 16th in contested possession in 2013, so yeah....we need to improve this area as priority 1. We were also a long way behind in Uncontested Possession so we need to get better there too. Getting the ball from a contest will obviously give us more chances of keeping hold of it.
  5. http://blog.tomwaterhouse.com/afl/afl-knowledge-010812/ Interesting article..
  6. I can sense that this thread will go into some funky places. Call me a prophet.
  7. I don't like to brag but..
  8. Your game plan must be centred around the opposition kicking a lot of behinds or getting a lot of soft frees.I can tell you now that the Roos game plan will be based on winning clearances and beating opponents around the ground then on keeping the footy. Contested ball winning is the most important skill of a footballer. You would struggle to find an afl coach who would disagree. It's why Carey, Matthews, dunstall Ablett etc have flags and are considered greats. They could do the lot. I am actually very surprised to be even having this debate with people who I actually rate as decent students of the game. It is just so fundamental.
  9. We have been horrible at the lot, and we need to improve every area.
  10. Keeping possession is extremely important. There is nothing more important than winning contested footy in the course of a game. Get it, then keep it, then score. It isn't even debatable.
  11. Not sure what you are on about, there is a robust discussion about footy. Nothing pathetic here. Demonland is a place for discussion about footy, give it a go.
  12. If everyone wins contests consistently then you have 22 players consistently beating 22 opposition players and winning every week. Now why would you want that? NB: I don't want to derail another training thread but it's a good discussion that could perhaps be continued elsewhere.
  13. It wasn't a rebuttal, it is just how it is. We are in agreement anyway. Roos and Toumpas will get it right, I am confident of that. Outside mids, like the way that Craig Bradley and Steven Stretch played, they are gone. I don't expect him to bash and crash through the game like Jones does but there are times when he will need to go, cliche but true. If he doesn't consistently, he will be back at Casey, as would any other player. Having exquisite skills does not indemnify you from winning hard footy. Having/doing both wins Brownlows, finals and flags.
  14. Agree, it's not exactly big news that a 2nd year mid needs to work on a part of his game or that a highly ranked draftee is drafted with known deficiencies. The defensiveness some people display of high draft picks is unreal. I think the kid is made of the right stuff and I back him to become a very good footballer.
  15. English is funny like that. You need to type the words that actually represent what you are trying to get across. A couple of people had hissies over Magner being cut and suddenly it's everyone. That is not accurate, it's not even partially accurate. It is just plain wrong. You have an Us V Them mentality, build a bridge mate the world is full of various shades of grey..
  16. Nail - head. Those who bemoan our disposal out of the backline need to consider this also. Our ability to provide decent options for the man with the ball has been deplorable for years.
  17. Breaking the lines might be their primary role or strength but they both get just under 30% contested possession. As others have said you need to have a strong game in and out in the modern game.
  18. No you didn't say "a lot" and that isn't accurate either. You said "everyone".
  19. Agree 100%. No pontificating and no arguing. Praying you win your fight Bails. All the best for you and your family.
  20. Trying to understand this selection...I think other than Garland our defenders' ability to shut down dangerous half forwards is questionable. If we lose defenders we have the flexibility in Dunn and Garland to play tall or small, rebound or lockdown. This guy might be able to do a lockdown job if needed and he should be able to do it better than Terlich, Clisby or Toumpas.
  21. Moves like Paul Kelly. Disclaimer: I never said he was as good, would captain his team or win a brownlow.
  22. Nice highlights. Looks as good a prospect as you could get at 18 years and 200cm. Nice sticky hands. Like the look of him.
