What is the essence of a football club's existence ?
jabberwocky replied to Hannabal's topic in Melbourne Demons
I eat, my reason for eating is to be sustained otherwise I will die but it is not my sole reason for eating. Other reasons include -I enjoy the taste of certain foods. -I enjoy having a meal with people for social reasons. You get the analogy. And I have been over it before, the poll actually answers the question itself. IMO the use of the word sole is the deal breaker for reasons I have already gone into. Call me pedantic if you like, has a bit to do with my background. I don't expect you to concede and I think I have said enough on it. Still a good thread and a worthwhile discussion. -
What is the essence of a football club's existence ?
jabberwocky replied to Hannabal's topic in Melbourne Demons
No, but likewise it is the Melbourne Football Club and not the Melbourne Football Team. If I am being asked from a personal perspective then a flag is what I long to see and it is the reason I support the club, follow it's journey etc. For me it is the raison d'tere. By putting the word "sole" in there the statement becomes unsupportable for me when clearly there are members of the club who think differently. I really can't add any more to it other than that for the sake of accuracy I voted 'C' even though I wanted to vote 'a'. -

I don't disagree with any of that at all rpfc. -
What is the essence of a football club's existence ?
jabberwocky replied to Hannabal's topic in Melbourne Demons
The statement is very close to true, if you swapped "club" for" football dept" or "solely" to "predominantly" then I and I would suggest a large majority of others would have picked that option. Similarly if it was "Every decision made by the footy dept should be geared toward winning a premiership" then that would be another I would agree with unreservedly. "if members of the club have voted yes it must be true". Its not about that. If you ask for the club's opinion you may well disagree with it but you can't assert that it is not thier opinion. -

If members of the club have voted no, the statement cannot be true, its really that simple. Regardless of whether you think they are flogs or not. Semantics maybe, but still validates my point that the statement just can't be true. -

Are you saying that you are not part of the "club". -

I gave myself a get out by saying "rarely", therefore it's not a blanket statement. I didn't say "always". That's the big difference here. I really wanted to agree with you but I had a problem with it as I outlined already, but yes you are right that a question can't be flawed, but as a statement it is self evident that it cannot be correct when members of the "club" have voted no. On your last point I am with you but I don't share your criticism of these people as I believe most of us have the best interests of the club at heart and are wishing to take some moral high ground. I do understand thier dilemna as I take my kids to the footy to barrack for a win and it is a strange and unsettling feeling to not want this at the moment. Like you I understand the importance of winning less than 5 in the long term interests of the club. -

Blanket statements are rarely true particularly when you use the word "club" which encompasses a broad range of people with different objectives and ideas and the word "solely" together. I agree that the operation of the club should be geared toward one objective, but not everyone who is a member of the "club" is responsible for operating the club. I love the topic and I think it raises a great discussion but the question is flawed. H would I be right in believing that the topic was inspired by your frustration at some supporters not accepting "list management"? -
Jamar Ice Skating? I thought he had an injured quad???????????????? Part of his recovery regime perhaps?

What is the essence of a football club's existence ?
jabberwocky replied to Hannabal's topic in Melbourne Demons
Exactly. You can't answer the question without defining the "Melbourne Football Club" first. If the football club consists of all the different professionals and volunteers, it members and supporters and seeing some members of the said football club have voted "no" and "maybe" then the questioned is answered. -

Had this statement been part of the poll the result would be very different. -

I want to see a premiership desperately but lets put it another way. I have great memories of Robbie Flower, Todd Viney, Gary Lyon, Jim Stynes and others playing. Watching them was a big part of my growing up. Likewise those guys love the club. Granted that a premiership would have been awesome but it doesn't make my experience as a supporter or thier experience as players obsolete because a flag wasn't won. The flag is the Holy Grail, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the pursuit of same. -

Don't know you would have to ask all the suppoters, players comittee of that era. In 2009 "the club" made up of its many arms have stated in your poll that it is not its "sole" aim. You can't do a poll then ignore the evidence because it doesnt suit your conclusion. Its far too complex a question to give a simple answer. -

jabberwocky replied to Hannabal's topic in Melbourne Demons
"The club" is made up of many parts including the members and supporters. Some members have clearly stated in the thread that they believe that the club exists for other reasons other than winning the flag therefore the answer is self evident. There is a difference between a football clubs "existence" and its "goals" . Of course the clubs goal is to win the premiership but it can't be its sole goal because there are a number of other goals that need to be met to make that possible. Its an impossible question to answer in any simplicity. -
When things became tight on Sunday......

I don't want to talk about it. -
14 possessions, 8 kicks, 6 handballs, 4 marks, 5 tackles. 78% game time courtesy of the age. Afl stats are down so I can't get hold of contested possessions or efficiency stats, but his efficiency looked pretty good. His tackle count was the equal second highest on the ground behind Davey and equal to Moloney. I agree with Nasher that much like Mclean and Jones he is a grunt midfielder only.

Spot on, not the most athletically gifted kid but his disposal is pretty good and I reckon with another season he has the frame to build a strong body. Has a good brain too and lloks like he will win a fair bit of footy when given more game time.

Surely this is tongue in cheek?

I smell an agenda.

Yes it was an ordinary effort and am sure the debrief will sort it out. He will learn from it. It becomes a problem when it becomes a habit. How's Liam Jurrah going Sticks??
-
I don't know if this has ever been raised? If it has I apologise. How about having a draft ladder which is taken from the results from mid season - mid season, rather than working off the end of season ladder. To me it makes sense and it is an easy solution. Any issues with it?

That's where Bailey would call it "development" and others would call it "tanking". Nothing's really changed. The past 2 years haven't been about trying to win games of footy to make the finals. In that respect there will be no discernible change in direction till next year.
