  1. I am like many of you, I want Brock as captain, he is my favourite player, but as I watch the start of this video (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=lA110Y3TS2Y&feature=related)

I realise, Brock as good as he is, he doesn’t lead (at the moment) by example, unlike Brad. As an example, how many times have we seen Brad go back with the flight and take a mark, one of the hardest things to do in footy. Yes Brock will be captain (at some stage) but I see Brad leading by example. Brock will win our B@F (if he isn’t injured) and he will is most likely to win a brownlow one day.

I've never seen McLean play half back flank thus having the oppurtunity to run back with the flight.

  2. Well i've sat down and done alot of shuffling and made my team that i feel would be our best. I have put some unique choices in, but i feel they could really work

B Matthew Warnock, Stefan Martin, Colin Garland

HB Rowan Bail, Jared Rivers, Ricky Petterd

C James Strauss, Sam Blease, Cale Morton

HF Matthew Bate, Brad Miller, Cameron Bruce

F Brad Green, Paul Wheatley, Addam Maric

R Mark Jamar, Brock McLean, Jack Grimes

Int Paul Johnson, Aaron Davey, Nathan Jones, Austin Wonaeamirri

Emergencies: Simon Buckley, Clint Bartram, James Frawley, Jack Watts, Jamie Bennell, Brent Moloney, Neville Jetta, Colin Sylvia, Russell Robertson, John Meesen, Daniel Bell, Lynden Dunn, Matthew Whelan, Michael Newton

A full-back line of Garland, Warnock and Martin is very solid and will be very good for a long time i feel.

On the half-back line i have gone with Bail coz he looks very ready for AFL and quite quick and classy so he can provide alot from there. Rivers and Petterd will be back in 09 and will add a huge amount to our line-up.

I have gone with a centreline including Blease for speed and dash with polish, complimented by Strauss and Morton (both who are pure class) on the wings. That centreline looks mighty classy to me

On the Half-forward line i reckon Bruce can be very very handy like he was in his early days at the dees, he can provide a nice target and kick 30+ goals from half-forward i believe. I believe that Bate and Miller are also best used floating around half-forward as lead-up targets and can work with Bruce to create a very formiddable half-forward line. I really really like this setup.

On the full-forward line i have thrown a spanner in the works. Watts will not be ready and i feel that Wheatley is tall and has good hands, whilst being a very nice, long kick. Wheatley would provide a nice option at full-forward i think. I like the idea of Green playing as a second full-forward and have Wheatley and Green as multiple targets. Maric is a specialist forward-pocketer with dead-eye accuracy and he is a lock in the forward pocket for the next 10 years. This full-forward line is alot better than will be given credit for, i think they could be very successful.

Jamar and Johnson can share ruck duties til Spencer is ready, and i feel that Grimes and Mclean are our best ruck rover combination. I reckon these two will add to the class of the centerline previously mentioned.

It is very very exciting looking at the quality that is still on the list as depth. We have got a good list coming along now and i am really excited...

Ha you state that Watts won't be ready yet you put a player in Blease who will require more physical development right in the guts of the ground? Another thing this is not club footy where you can swap a player to other positions that seem to suit there physical requirements, Paul Wheatley will never ever play full forward, the concept is just ludacris, I don't think I've ever seen him take a contested mark. And you have Sylvia in your emergency's.

Ha oh well at least you trying something different and I like your emphasis on youth.

  3. FB:Grimes Warnock Martin

    HB:Rivers Garland Green

    W:Morton McLean Buckley

    HF:Davey Bate Jetta

    FF:Maric Miller Wonnaeamirri

    R:Jamar Sylvia Moloney

    I: PJ, Strauss, Whelan, Petterd.

Bate will come out for Robbo when he's fit and Miller will move to CHF.

Make no mistake Bruce, Bartram and Jones don't have the footskills to go with Bailey's gameplan and will subsequently be dropped.

  4. -what's with the attitude? the only reason i used my name was to show that, when looking at the title, it is not just going to be a page with a link to a herald sun article

-not once have i tried to boast about my talents or claim any of this to be correct like YM, i am just trying to make a summary

    ha whatever.

I'm still not sure why we needed "your" collective summary when we already have individual threads on each of the players.

  5. I've gotta say I'm going with the 'ologists here...

If the Hawks model is anything to go on, you draft your spine, and talls first. Give them a couple of years to develop while you recruit the mids and flankers that we all know develop quicker. You don't do it the other way around... otherwise you end up with Sylvia and McLean both 28 before your new recruits come of age.

It could still work of course, next years draft could contain ANOTHER KP forward and maybe a ruckman... followed by perhaps another KP defender should the need arise in the late teens... And things would even out a bit.

I'm excited about Jetta for where we got him, and obviously Watts is enough food on your plate for any one draft... but I would have liked it if we'd gone with another real name, like Swift with our second or third. Blease seems ok without being devastating... and he's tiny... and Strauss seems like a good ordinary player to me. It's VERY early days, but neither look like they are in the embryonic stages of being out and out stars...

I'm not ALL that pumped about these selections. But then at 17 and 19 maybe I was never going to be? At least these players look like the type that DB needs to fit into his gameplan...

So Dappa Dan what talls would you have picked up with 17 and 19?

I have no doubt in my mind Melbourne was planning to pick up one of Mitch Brown and Ryan Shoenmakers at these selections however they were taken in the first round.

What would you have Melbourne do? Pick up some talls who they didn't rate at these picks just for the sake of it?

Strauss and Blease were the best players available at those picks no doubt about it.

You talk about the Hawks supposed "model" of drafting. In 2004 they were fortunate enough to have picks 2 and 5 used on Roughead and Franklin.

We had picks 17 and 19. Were you expecting us to pick up a Franklin or Roughead with those 2 picks? There just totally different circumstances

  6. 2012:

    FB: Bennell Frawley Warnock

    HB: Strauss Garland Rivers

    W: Buckley McLean Blease

    HF: Sylvia Miller Davey

    FF: Jetta Watts Wonnaeamirri

    R: Johnson Morton Grimes

    I: Maric Bate Petterd Spencer

God its hard. We need another key forward clearly and ruck but farout that side looks pretty impressive. It just looks very well balanced.

Couldn't even fit in Molone, Jones and Bail
