I don't think this has anything to do with the AFL, they don't run the MCG nor the Richmond Station precinct. Further to jnrmac's comment, if you separate the idea from the person proposing it, I think it has merit.

Some of the cricket commentators (hello Shane Warne and Michael Slater) don't appreciate the value of silence and just don't know when to shut up and stop talking just for the sake of it. One of Richie Benaud's maxims was to never tell the viewers what they could see for themselves. Less is more, in other words.

If there was an option to just hear the crowd noise without the execrable commentators and ads, I'd love to listen to that. Unfortunately, that's not possible, at least not on the FTA channel which is all I have available to me.

One day, a fire broke out in a food stall on the outer wing at Arden Street. I think this may have been a televised match between North and Collingwood and the incident was captured on that night's TV replay. A wag in the crowd (OK, my brother) was heard to yell out "Hot Pies!".

The worst thing about Arden Street in those days wasn't the cramped conditions, the overflowing urinals, the poor facilities, the over zealous parking officers, the lack of seating nor the partisan crowd. It was that godawful Courage Breweries product, which sponsored North, and which was the only beer available in the outer. It was so bad that people were going home sober from a day out at the footy.
