  1. Chris from Camberwell rang Dwayne Russell’s programme on 3AW and told the listening audience that Melbourne had some real beauties in the Casey VFL team and was adamant that JVR should be in the Melbourne team. Dwayne gave him a prize.

  3. A big, belated thank you to the St Kilda Football Club and to Max King. You nearly blew it and, if truth be known, it didn’t really matter … but thanks anyway.
  4. The AFLW season kicked off last night with Carlton vs Collingwood at Ikon Park but tonight, it will really swing into action with the Grand Final replay from earlier this year. Can the Demons emulate the men’s AFL team from March and win the equivalent game tonight? Match preview from Meggs is here

  7. That said, we won’t be able to stop him if he wants to leave and, if that’s the case, what’s a meaningful trade for Jacko?
  8. This was the middle pin in the Demons’ horror stretch in mid season before the bye. The Swans were missing Buddy through suspension. Melbourne had Steven May out with injury. 9. Nothing less than a 120 point win for the Saints will do. That would see them in the top 8 when the Blues and the Dogs lose.
  10. Because the Lions are so hard to beat on their own deck, this would be the first time this year when the Demons aren’t favourites with the bookies. This is the best time for us to defy the odds, to prove the doubters wrong and to earn our spot in the top four!
  11. Who could ever forget World of Sport with Captain Blood, Louis, Bobby Davis and Uncle Doug?
  12. Played well at the weekend for Vic Metro vs Queensland in the Under 17 Futures. Here’s how his performance was described in Rookie Me Central ~ “#7 Kynan Brown (Oakleigh Chargers) 13/01/2005 | 180cm | Midfielder Brown, a father-son candidate for Melbourne (son of Nathan), slotted straight into Metro’s midfield and had little trouble getting his hands on the ball. Though he possesses a punchy kick, he looked more slick by hand than foot, and used that to his advantage when helping his side work away from the centre bounces. A natural ball winner with strong bursts of speed, Brown was a consistent figure in the Big V.”

  14. Callum Twomey reporting that “No.1 pick contender George Wardlaw returned to the field today after hamstring injuries ruled him out of the U18 champs. But unfortunately suffered another hamstring injury today at school level in opening few minutes. With a month to go that may be season over for him.” The injury won’t stop him from being drafted but it could see him drop a place or two in some peoples’ rankings. I’ve seen him come up through the ranks of the juniors and he’s a quality midfield bull who should play AFL early next year.

  16. At this stage, all I want is us in the top four and a re-set for the finals. Whether or not they make the finals is only important if you think we might play against the last placed finisher in the top eight. At this stage, that could be Carlton, Richmond or the Western Bulldogs.
  17. I’m still scratching my head to understand how he was exonerated because it’s inconsistent with the AFL’s protection of the head policies. However, now that this game is done and dusted, I’m hoping that he’ll play a role in Collingwood’s downfall next week.
  18. We need a few players to produce a big third quarter to lift us in this game.
  19. Carlton fans are boasting that their team will make a statement tonight by upsetting the reigning premiers to cement their return to finals football. That’s right folks. According to them, we’re chopped liver! Time to prove that the Demons are still premiership contenders!
  20. Perhaps some late switches for this weekend with Kozzy said to be under an injury cloud?
  21. SENSATIONAL SELECTION NEWS: JAKE SPENCER IS BACK!!!
  22. Regrettably, this is a problem these days with some of those who cover this area. However, I believe that Brown has been selected to play in the Vic Metro Under 17 Future stars team on Sunday.
  23. No worries at all - It’s cool.
  24. I'm deep into the book Between The Flags and it really is beautifully written as well as being so informative. I was always of the view that the MFC were diddled by country zoning - especially the decision made not to rotate the zones as originally planned. This really settled our fate and unfortunately, the complacency and lack of commercial acumen of our board and our leadership of the time had a lot to answer for. In many ways, the conservative nature of the club which served it well as it rose through the fifties and into the sixties, failed it in the decades to follow. For a better understanding of the issues and also many other aspects of our wilderness years I heartily recommend Between The Flags. A poster on another thread about the book has posted the following information about where to find the book:- Between The Flags will be on sale at Camberwell Market throughout August - On August 14 (basking in the glow of a return to the winner's list hopefully) at Stall 23; August 21 at Stall 24 and August 28 at Stall 64 (near the donut van). The best thing about market sales (at Bentleigh and Camberwell so far) has been meeting other fans and sharing stories of our mutual passion for the Demons. For those who can't make it to the market, the book is also available from Readings; The Avenue Bookstore (where it's made the non-fiction best seller list); Beaumaris Book; Ashburton news extra, and now, for rural fans from Collins Booksellers in Shepparton (the heart of the Demons' old country zone), and from Bookish in Hargreaves St Bendigo. Looking forward to catching up with anyone able to make it to the market between 7am and 12.30pm. BTF is also available online at https://www.betweentheflags57.com.au
