  2. It was good to see the way Richmond responded to Rex Hunt's pre match warm up by following his example and emulating the great man's career. In the first half, they played tough football like the Tiger of old and in the second, they went fishing.
  3. Having just spent a few days in NYC I can assure you there's no tyranny of distance in that place. Staying in midtown Manhattan, I caught the subway to Coney Island in the Borough of Brooklyn (50 minutes each way) and I had covered only 5 of New York's boroughs. To make it big, you have to think big!

  5. The Brunswick Street Oval was the scene of Melbourne's encounter with lowly Fitzroy on 6 June, the game attracting a meagre attendance of 12,727. The home team was thrashed although the Demons, coached by Ron Barassi in place of Norm Smith who was in Adelaide coaching the Victorian team, took the foot off the pedal in the final term allowing the Lions to gain some respectability on a dismal day. With Smith and the state representatives away and Barassi at the helm of a makeshift side, the Demons ran rampant in the third quarter scoring 10.4 to nothing in a brilliant display that would most certainly have quenched his ambitions to coach in the future. By year's end, he was coach of Carlton and while he was to play in his sixth winning grand final with Melbourne in the interim, the foundation was laid for a far different Melbourne going far into the future than that which had ruled supremely for more than a decade.

  7. Just a few comments on Tom Rockliff and the fact that we didn't draft him in 2008. Rockliff won the Murray Bushrangers' Best and Fairest award, was the leading goalkicker in the TAC Cup with 59 goals and kicked four goals in the Bushrangers' 2008 premiership team. He was overshadowed in the grand final by Steele Sidebottom who kicked 10 that day. The knock on both players is that they were slow but that didn't stop Collingwood from taking Sidebottom who has become one of their important players in an outstanding midfield. It didn't stop Rockliff in the end because he's now VC at the Lions and one of their best players. He was however, overlooked in the main draft of 2008 and subsequently trained with Melbourne. I was at the club's training run at Casey Fields the day before the pre season and rookie drafts. There were two young invitees who both impressed - Rockliff and Jordie McKenzie. Since we had first pick in both the PSD (where there were six live picks) and the rookie draft, there was every chance we could have taken both of them but then the news was filtering in that we were keen on Liam Jurrah and he was keen to come and nobody questioned the selection afterwards until the wheels fell off badly for Liam two years ago. Anyway, Brisbane swooped on him at pick 5 and because Richmond was always going to take Ben Cousins with pick 6, we effectively missed out on Rockliff by one selection and we took Jordie instead. McKenzie had been a good pick for a rookie selection and obviously, Rockliff would have been a sensational pick if available but you really can't blame anybody. Nobody had a retospectoscope to predict the future for Jurrah or the rate of progress of the slow midfielder/forward who was overshadowed in that TAC Cup final.
  8. I think djr might mean James Harmes, not Jayden Hunt.

  10. Late in the game Collingwood leads by 4 points.
  11. Another lead change. Collingwood by 3 points after a soccer goal.
  12. Tim Smith goals from the pocket after a pass from Strauss. Casey back in front.
  13. Casey bring it back to a two point game.
  14. Collingwood open with a free followed by a 50m penalty, a mark and a goal. And another quick one. Pies lead by 9.
  15. Pies temporarily took the lead before a goal to Rosier on the siren sees the Scorps lead by 3 points at 3/4 time. Casey Scorpions 9.5.59 lead Collingwood 8.8.56.
  16. Three point game 53 - 50 as Collingwood starting to get on top. Yes - helped a bit by the umpires.
  17. Casey leads by 10 points and we're in a crucial part of the game for the Scorps who have lost a couple this year after leading at this stage.
  18. Barry gets his second and first gamer Rennie does likewise. Casey leads 40 - 28.

  22. Scorpions lead by a point late in first quarter in greasy conditions. Jordie McKenzie, Jimmy Toumpas and Aidan Riley are all playing at Casey Fields. Also missing from the selected side is former Demon Troy Davis. Matt Rennie who has an early goal is making his senior debut for the Scorps along with Jackson McDonald.

  24. Chip Le Grand reports on the arrest of Shane 'Dr Ageless' Charter and claims this is "a dramatic blow" to ASADA - ASADA star witness Shane Charter arrested. I reckon Le Grand, who some suggest is the Bomber's PR man, might have been reading too many cheap paperbacks. The arrest of Charter who already has drug dealing convictions is a known associate of Dank and Hird from past days and we're told he supplied some of the peptides used in the Essendon supplements regime. It was also reported last year that he has gone into business with the family accused of laundering money for the Mokbel drug empire. Surely, if evidence is produced of Charter's role at Bomberland, the fact that he's been questioned in relation to an investigation into criminal activity associated with the importation and supply of peptide hormones, is not going to assist their cause one iota? Charter's credibility was probably already in question and based on his experience in the field of peptides, he's probably something of an expert witness on the subject.
  25. It's frustrating to all that the matter has taken so long to reach a conclusion but, catching up on some reading, I note the quote at the end of this article:- New ASADA boss says show cause notices could be issued 'within weeks' That amounts to a substantial body of potential evidence in a case against the clubs and the players involved. I'm not surprised that an understaffed organisation looking at two codes is taking its time. Most of the criticism around ASADA's process appears to be unwarranted. Strangely enough, Essendon which always maintained that the truth would come out doesn't appear to have been particularly co-operative. The investigation would surely have reached a much sooner conclusion had the Bombers and their agents, staff and drug suppliers not lost, misplaced or forgotten the contents of whatever was injected into their players.
