The 2014 AFL National Draft
Early in this thread I cited one of the leading draft watchers Knightmare and we've done well based on his assessments:- Our five new players tonight all feature prominently in his 2014 draft power rankings. There are 18 clubs in the competition and we have 5 in Knightmare's top 30 including the top two:- Best few on list quality 1. Christian Petracca (VIC – Mid/Fwd) 2. Angus Brayshaw (VIC – Mid) Capable contributors 23. Oscar McDonald (VIC – KPD) 27. Alex Neal-Bullen (SA – Mid) 29. Billy Stretch (Melb – F/S - SA – Mid/Fwd) Knightmare also had Brayshaw and Petracca at 2 & 3 and Neal-Bullen and McDonald at 21 & 22. Stretch was a father/son.

The 2014 AFL National Draft
The Clark/Landsberger Phantom Draft The Emma Quayle Phantom Draft The Brett Anderson Phantom Draft The Paige Cardona Phantom Draft The trend seems to be going in favour of the Saints picking McCartin and, as many have commented both here and elsewhere, we are going to end up with two of the best three young talents on draft day. We don't know how it will end up once the players drafted join their clubs but the vibe and the Mabo in me are saying it will be a good result for us. The ones we need to nail now are 40 and 53 and of course, a couple of handy rookies next week.

The 2014 AFL National Draft
The Saints would have to be rope-able if the news and the circumstances in Sam McClure's tweet have been leaked by a club insider. It's not a good look for the club to be taking pot shots at a high draft choice and, as I mentioned elsewhere it could also backfire badly on them. I don't believe the AFL would be happy about it either. The fact remains that for at least the past 6 to 8 weeks there's been a familiar tone in draft circles suggesting the Petracca will go at # 1 and he will be followed by Brayshaw. If the latest rumour is fact then we get both of them. I was just getting used to the thought of us getting Brayshaw and McCartin and now this. To have two strong mid sized players of this calibre coming onto the list really gives our midfield stocks a major boost and it's also a major game changer in terms of what the club will do with the two later picks at # 40 and 53. It would be interesting if Reece McKenzie was still available at 40.

The 2014 AFL National Draft
Every year, Bigfooty poster Snoop Dog puts out one of the more interesting and better Phantom Drafts and this year it's no different. Like most of the others, he has Christian Petracca as the first choice with Paddy McCartin and Angus Brayshaw at 2 and 3 going to Melbourne (note the order). However, he considers Petracca, Peter Wright and McCartin as the best three players in the draft leaving out my two choices Brayshaw and Jake Lever. Here are his descriptions of McCartin, Brayshaw and Lever:- Now that Melbourne officially (well ... almost) has # 40 in play, it's worth noting Snoop Dog's choice of Ed Langdon. Since one or two others have put Langdon in this position, do they know something? Predictably, the Dog expects # 53 to be used to upgrade Neville Jetta which still seems likely although there are reports that the club is considering a further delisting. The other player mentioned in his Phantom Draft is Billy Stretch who gets a nice tick. Snoop Dog goes all the way down through to his rookie draft picks but I won't go there. It's a good read on Bigfooty and thankfully not as long-winded as some of his past efforts. Well worth the read.

The 2014 AFL National Draft
That's just about where we stand at the moment but I wonder if the situation can be resolved by not promoting Nev Jetta officially off the rookie list but promoting him before the season starts (when JT goes onto the LTI)? I understand that we've offered him a new contract and said we'll upgrade him but can this be done?

Welcome back Old Dee. Lots of things are happening on the site, at Melbourne and of course with the Essendon dope saga. For instance, were expecting a big announcement from ASADA later this decade. On the Essendon front they've gone and hired a new assistant coach to the golden boy who is now known as "coach for life". The name of the new assistant is Mark Needle about who Bomber President proudly said when announcing the appointment, "with a name like 'Needle', he was the perfect candidate". Apparently, nobody was game enough to tell him that Tanya Hird who took copious notes during the interview process is a poor speller. Little also revealed that the selection panel was forced to overlook the only other realistic candidate George Stoned because he announced his retirement immediately after his interview. Meanwhile, Herald Sun football manager continues to insist that the mothers of half the team don't exist.

Tyler Roos
On what little I saw of him he looks lightly built and not ready for AFL. The TAC Cup clubs take a few overage age players every year and, if he qualifies, then perhaps another year at this level might hold him in good stead. Collingwood's Tom Langdon did exactly that at the Sandy Dragons in 2013 before getting drafted at 65 as a 19 year old and then had a very successful debut season with the Pies. And of course, Tyler could keep an eye on the young potential recruits coming up in the competition for us - the perfect recruiting scout.

The 2014 AFL National Draft
Thanks 'oil. Well, she's at odds with Chris25 who recently released his updated phantom draft (still no detailed profiles). He selects Bampton at 40 which would suit me - and he also has Gore available at that choice. I think his top four is about right to with the Saints taking Petracca, us getting Brayshaw and Lever and the Giants getting McCartin as their replacement for Boyd. The Saints get their KPF with their second pick and we unite two brothers with pick 53.I don't think the two Macs will end up in the same team (not even sure that we'll use 53 in the draft or at all yet) but I'd be happy with this (noting we would then take Nev as a rookie upgrade in the 80s) - Round 1 1. St Kilda - Christian Petracca (186cm, 92kg midfielder/forward from Eastern Ranges, VIC) 2. Melbourne - Angus Brayshaw (187cm, 86kg midfielder from Sandringhan Dragons, VIC) 3. Melbourne - Jake Lever (192cm, 84kg defender from Calder Cannons, VIC) 4. GWS - Patrick McCartin (193cm, 95kg forward from Geelong Falcons, VIC) 5.
