The chain start region includes kick-ins, stoppages and turnovers, and is limited to scores only. Here is the count of chains by location and type, with the resulting score. For example, the 23 "turnover" chains for Melbourne in D50 means that Melbourne gained possession in defensive 50 following an Essendon turnover. Melbourne scored 0 goals, 1 behind from those chains. Dees Record for non expansion clubs?
Sorry, I edited my post before you saw my addition! 29 past GWS players in 2017 (excluding players who went from Fitzroy to Brisbane post merger). Team lists are only available since 2012, so prior to that I have only included players who actually played a game in the given season.

Dees Record for non expansion clubs?
Melbourne's record is 16 past VFL players in 1908 were playing for other teams. There are currently 15 past Melbourne players on other teams' list which ranks equal fourth. I believe the overall record is 29 past GWS players in 2017 with other clubs (I have excluded Fitzroy -> Brisbane). POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Gold Coast
Re Petty, I agree that he competed well and probably played better than his rating suggests. He lost points from his ruck work as he wasn't credited any hitouts to advantage (so no +ve points) but a number of hitouts to the opposition. He also lost points from giving away a free kick, kicking a behind, and dropping a mark. And I commented on the handball metres gained here:
-
Stats File 2026 Season
Gold Coast had 188 kicks but I could only calculate the distance of 187 of them (without looking into that, it could be a kick on the siren where the result of the kick wasn't recorded). The gained 5220 metres by kick (187 x 27.9) + 379 by hand = 5599m. They gained a total of 5851 metres so an additional ~252m running. Re handball metres gained, I can at least confirm that none of the stats are typos as it's all generated automatically using a consistent methodology (pressure is one exception where I transcribe the stats from the Herald Sun). By my calculations, Melbourne had 70 handballs which gained territory amounting to 295 metres gained. 22 of these gained at least 5 metres. The remaining 61 handballs lost 232 metres. For Gold Coast, 102 handballs gained a total of 637 metres, and 61 lost 258 metres. Here are the estimated total handball distances and metres gained per Melbourne player yesterday. I should reiterate that these are my calculations, not official Champion Data numbers. From what I have seen, CD's handball metres gained numbers are generally a higher than mine, but my overall calculated metres gained are very close to CD's so it may be a methodology difference or the way that handball location (origin/destination) are recorded in the data set I use. I haven't manually cross-checked individual handballs against live vision to see how they're recorded, but maybe I will investigate that further at some point. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. That's fair. It certainly should be easier to access such basic info on the AFL website/app.- Stats File 2026 Season
I have the quarterly breakdown of all the stats if you're after anything specific. I could also include a table in my regular post with some of the key stats broken down by quarter. Any particular stats of most interest?- Stats File 2026 Season
Max Gawn won 15 hitouts (6 to advantage) in the last quarter from 27 ruck contests (but not every ruck contest has a hitout recorded). There was a total of 30 ruck contests in the quarter with the other three taken by Mihocek and van Rooyen. Pittonet (7), O'Keefe (2) and Young (1) combined for 10 hitouts in the last quarter which means Gawn's opponent won at least 7 hitouts in the quarter. Cheers mate! Re equity ratings for the back 6, some defenders can score quite well. Intercept marks (particularly contested marks), spoils and ball use can rate quite highly. For example, Harris Andrews is #1 in post-clearance equity this season; and players like Jack Sinclair and Bailey Dale rate highly on ball use equity. Even though the ratings measure scoreboard impact, it is as much about reducing the opponent's chances of scoring as it is increasing your own team's chances. Intercepting the ball deep in defence will be worth quite a bit, and moving the ball away from the defensive goals will also be credited in the ratings. It is certainly true that defenders in general won't rate as highly, but also players who do a lot of work off the ball will go unrewarded. I don't have access to enough data to explain the pressure ratings. But looking at some of the basic stats for the quarter, Carlton won more contested possessions than Melbourne (38-30) and the disposals that follow a contested possession will typically be under more pressure. Melbourne also had twice as many tackles which are worth the most pressure points. The pressure acts shows that ~74% of Carlton's disposals were under any sort of pressure compared to 70% of Melbourne's disposals. Melbourne's pressure obviously wasn't impactful in that quarter and Melbourne's ball use was appalling.
