What's important is winning premierships. Anything else, like whether players are "nice boys" or friendly to the nuffies in the outer is irrelevant.

I know that a ‘ruthless’ club would not give a (censored)…

  2. Further to this - this club is on a 5 year hiding to nothing if we can’t move past the past few months.

    Are we to boo him?

Are we to call him out on the street?

Are we to make it certain his departure through our actions?

    Really?

Goodwin is obviously trying to salvage what’s best for the club.

Can we give the space to do that or are we to take on the persona of the club to ensure any slight remains personal and any disloyalty is punished into infinitum?

    I care

    Maybe you shouldn’t.

Petracca may be an arrogant [censored], I don’t know, but that is the world of elite sportsmen and women who are celebrities and have high pressure and physically demanding jobs but also have a requirement to be a humble servant of the club and those on the periphery at all times.

We have got to ask less of these people - I demand respectful behaviour, professionalism, and performance and will forgive indiscretions.

It's ironic that other clubs are interested in Oliver but seemingly no interest in Tracc (outside of the usual 'all clubs would love a player of Petracca's ability' palaver).

No chance we trade Oliver IMHO.

It might have something to do with the asking price being more attainable. I don’t think we trade either for at least two years.

    My post was very serious.

And its concern related back to the idea that Melbourne was not immediately shutting down speculation ( although I don't really believe there is any thought of trading him; I think that was bignoting rumour-mongering).

Oh I can tell how serious you are about this.

Clubs have been trying to get our best players for half a decade now. We are not in a position to not listen right now. Stop making it so personal, when it is not even personal to the person it discusses.

What I don't get is this: we expect players to show total loyalty and commitment to the club and the jumper; how is it that we are not expected to give them the same loyalty?  That is why I hate this sort of talk. We owe one of our greatest, most committed, relentless and outstanding players the loyalty that he has shown us - by, eg, playing half a season in obvious severe pain in his dominant handballing hand.

I know it is said that football is a business. Does any one of us really believe that? - that we love Melbourne for its financial bottom line? No, We love our club because we love our club because we love our club. It is not just a business. It is  a  passion and we should respect it and treat it as such.

On a more serious note - the rumour was that other clubs were interested in him… Hardly the kind of ego-breaking news that would come from the Disloyal Despots of Demonland (c).

Also, the club pays the players and this is a business that they treat as such - it means more to us of course but don’t imbue too much - you will only get disappointed.

  8. Kate will be someone with the drought breaking flag next to her name and the first women’s flag for the club.

Hard to go past that for a defining figure in the club in modern times.

Moving on at the right time too, also a virtue.

Without being accused of ‘signalling’ or playing with identities (for shame) - it’s also that much harder for a woman in this landscape and she navigated well. Mistakes were made, as they always are, but she bows out with grace and a decade of service to the club.

  9. Who will review the reviews?

    Coastguard?

Honestly, internal reviews are a matter of course, announcing it is like announcing that you shave in the morning.

The pressure will build and we will be bringing in a couple of former footy greats from other clubs and Deloitte or a smaller firm to do an external review.

I think both of you, Dr G and Wayne,

have hit the issues on the head and all in all i don't think there is a lot of difference between the two of you..

All full of great and fair comments. I would just add without the Media input surely this could have surfaced and been resolved, a lot more inhouse, but don't ask me how other than a lot less confusion and purported entitlement by them.

Save for the fact that our best player was actively trying to leave the club, yes it could have been handled by the club…

Some of you are twisted around like pretzels right now; just straighten up and give in to the facts.

We have a bit of a work to do across the admin, FD, and playing group to get back to where we were.

So, we get a lot of sweeping statements about dropping standards, poor culture yada yada. We seem to have more difficulty naming names. As one who attends training as often as possible, I haven't noticed a drop in standards at training.

I don’t have to name names - our best player did an actual ‘ruction’ in trying to leave and implicated the ‘names’ as having dropped standards and professionalism.

This is such a silly argument - we are going to have an external review, possibly a new President, probably two new line coaches, and whatever recommendations come from this review that some of you have convinced yourselves will find little that the playing group can do better in both their professional preparation and behaviour…

Ahh, might want to look behind who before you backtrack too quickly.

    Why?

Seriously? Without getting into incidents that would get this post deleted - there has been players behaving an ill manner.

That is either quietly condoned or not adequately dealt with, but the ultimate evidence is that of our champion player, our only Norm Smith medallist, so disappointed in our dropping standards and professionalism that he made a right pickle of himself to escape This Club Of Great Leaders (c).

I don’t want to say these things… I don’t know what to say…we have some things to fix, and some home truths to sacrifice ourselves to.

It’s fascinating how the media conveniently sidesteps the clear evidence of strong on-field leadership at the club. Particularly when it comes to Jack Viney and Max Gawn.

While the off-field situation might raise some eyebrows, our on-field leadership for the most part is rock solid.

And while those 46 hours of leadership are important, they are not formative, only performative.

The evidence of recent experiences does not suggest the off-field leadership of our on-field leaders is very strong.

    WWSPD?

    What would Sam Presti do.

The OKC Thunder had a big tear down and banked a metric tonne of picks. The star player wanting out and then the team packing it in is pretty common in the NBA.

I doubt we’d do it, but I think this is how I’d do it:

    - Tracc goes for picks or high quality under 23 players
    - Move on Fritsch
    - See if we can sneak a decent pick upgrade from Steve May to a contender
    - Viney to North

    - Hold Oliver for now. With no rush to win the plan would be to maximise his value and possibly restructure his contract by front loading the money

    - Hold Pickett for now, Freo have other priorities and there’s not a compelling market for him just now.

Now here’s a list of reasons to we wont do it:

    1. It’s an even comp and if we can find some best 22 mature players we can stay competitive and hope we smash the draft.

    2. It would be incredibly hard on Gawn and other leftover senior players

    3. it would condemn the Pres, the coach, the admin. No matter how well you’d sold it if we suddenly won 5 games next a lot of heads would roll. It would also put us in a terrible financial position.

This admin has won more championships than Sam Presti…

Those moves would ruin the club fabric and guarantee nothing. Football is not like bball, especially NBA; you get the right one person or two people and you can be in the top tier of the NBA. Not the same in footy. At all.

  15. There is fault on all sides and the media only flavours it.

The mental gymnastics on here to absolve the club or to pin it on the media or his advisors is ridiculous .

Some of you look like sheep walking on its hind legs.

Did Libby leave because of our culture? Joking of course but wonder what she offered

She was very circumspect about it all but did agree that a review should be done as ’its been 2 years now’ and also said that the club seems overly defensive with reference to its culture and that ‘owning up to things’ is a sign of a good culture.

Are we missing an opportunity here? Will he be mentally and physically prepared to have an impact in 2025?

If he misses half the year and does bugger all on the field as he eases his way back, we'll be in big trouble if he's traded at the end of 2025, value will be shot

If we are doing hypothetical counter-factuals - how about this; he leaves as one of the top 5 players in the game and wins a flag for some other club…

Would have preferred him just to leave tbh

Damage is done and true colours have been shown

Let's see how many games he is unavailable for next season

Footy teams are very forgiving and malleable for their own.

I think you are projecting that damage.

Some fans will not get over the injustice of a player’s seeming recalcitrance or disloyalty or ambivalence to appearance keeping.

Ah well, I am a forgiver and I will enjoy watching him run around in the red and the blue.
