I understand that but Petty has always been a defender and IMO he is on par with Tomlinson. Tomlinson only lost 1 one on one and that was against the Cats after May went down with a fractured eye socket

Our forward line only really clicked in the last four weeks and is pretty damn potent with Fritsch, Brown, McDonald, Spargo, Neal Bullen and Kozzie with Jackson coming off the bench.
Who would Petty replace if playing there?

Our backline has Lever, May, Petty, Salem, Hibberd and Bowey with Rivers coming off the bench.
    Who would/should Tomlinson replace?

Im curious as to what makes either of you think Petty would show more potential as a forward?

Think you may be missing the point.

we acknowledge that Petty is likely a better defender than Tomlinson.

But Petty potentially has more flexibility to be able to play both back and forward, where as Tomlinson is likely to be significantly better as a backman vs other positions.

ie not saying Petty will be a better forward than back :- just saying Petty forward may be best for the team sometime in the future.

Hence at some stage, if Tomlinson gets back to his best, the club will most likely trial Petty as a forward :- even if it’s just as a backup, or as knowledge that they can pull that move to gain a match-up advantage.

Don’t stress yourself out :- we are talking about a great problem to have, re flexibility and optimising team balance.

Why oh why would either of you want to take a 21 year old premiership defender out of his position he held down for 19 games and an entire finals series with no problems?

It's Tomlinsons problem now to try and break into a premiership side

Because Tomlinson didn’t lose a 1 on 1 defensive contest in any 2021 game he played - that’s why.

Petty & Tomlinson both gun defenders, but think Petty more potential as a fwd.

your point is correct though. Don’t need to even think about this, until Tomlinson bangs down the door again.

Now that Petty has had a career 'toughening' in the backline, holding down a key position and opponents across the finals with aplomb,  it's time to make him a real star of the game - in the forward line. The guy could be (is) limitless.

    Agree with you Dee.

assuming Tomlinson gets back to full fitness, definitely think Petty could be left field competition for Brown/TMac/Weid

Thanks! And jeez, I'm glad they talked some sense into the club. Can't underestimate how important it is to have fellas around who show compassion and understanding and leadership to and for their teammates

Even though Nev has gone and worked for the pies, I would be highly surprised if he would spread mis-truths on the topic.

When he says "we could have lost Koz, if it wasn't handled delicately" (ie if he was forced to come back to training early), then I take his word for it.

Can we get a TLDR on this SEN interview please?

Nev, just explained that the club wasn’t keen on having Koz interstate for 1 month + at a critical time in the pre-season.

But, Nev, Whelan and Maysie explained to the club the importance of the grieving time, and the need to support and trust Kozzie while he was interstate, and away from the main group.

Whelan has an important role.  But its really a non issue compared to what the article is making out. I would say clubs are very good at working with indigenous players today and supporting them.  Our history with our indigenous players in the past says we do the right thing by our player when we can.

Sorry Darkhouse, but I will choose to believe N.Jetta's views over yours.

Listen to his 18 mins interview on SEN if you haven't already.

They tried to explain it away with tales of “gastro” but when we finished with the doggies I reckon they had to accept that we were just that bloody good that night.

Every time after we play Geel the next few years, win/loss or draw, we should leak out that the players had gastro a couple of days after :- to just take the [censored] out of them

  8. Let’s hope minor elements of the grand final, such as

“who ran past for a handball receive for Melb at the 13 minute mark of the 3rd quarter, on the right half forward flank?”

come up in trivia nights we are at :- otherwise I am starting to judge/doubt myself re the amount of times I have watched the replay.

Am not done yet either. It’s still not boring.

Which is one of the reasons why this one-off case is so harmful. She has a platform and visibility and the optics here ("nurse refuses jab") are appalling in terms of the public-health message that's needed. At least pleased to see her club come out and encourage people to get vaxxed.

    Don’t stress bing.

increasing media stories of anti-vaxxer deaths, will over-power this young ladies attention seeking efforts.

Does anyone on here need to fess up that they cracked it after the Bonts goal and stormed out only to check the score at 3/4 time and think WTF.

Nup, but had half time outside by myself - basically preparation time for a “how to handle a loss”

third qtr I actually felt confident we were one lucky break away from turning the tide!

Can we get back to discussing the greatest game in our history?

I dont want us to look back on this thread in a couple of years and see pages of comments about ads for dating Asian women or shoes or whatever. That would plain embarrassing. Like discussing the quality of cheeseboards or something.

For me I have been super impressed on my multiple watchings with Tom Sparrow. Love his attack on the footy, his positioning, his toughness and his kicking. We have an absolute beauty there.

Rogue River Blue or Jersey blue cheese with a wine, post a demons win?

    Tracc was special. And delicious.

Not quite ready to say we’re on par with Richmond yet alone above them and Hawthorn. Not sure what Bruce is saying by calling us more exciting. The 3rd quarter burst will go down in history for sure, but otherwise I’m not convinced.

The suffocating defensive pressure and crisp handball game of the Tigers gets really underrated because they had a few unfashionable role players. When they clicked in to top gear in grand finals they were a joy to watch.

And Hawthorn’s kicking and organisation changed the league entirely. 08, 12 (in a losing effort), completely shutting down Sydney in 14, they were a special side.

Im glad we’ve got a chance to forge our own legacy but I think big statements are a little silly.

    Give it a spell Dee.

richmond / Hawthorn or anyone else hasn’t produced a GF or finals series as good as we just did, in the last 20/30 years.

    Who would have thunk it.

Here we are worried about a young star going home interstate and guess what, he brings home to melbourne instead.

To see Lukes mum absolutely ecstatic and dressed in complete red and blue says volumes.

Just between you and me I think Luke may have told his mum what a great place the MFC is at the moment.

How the heck did we do that?

There is the benchmark for other clubs:- rather than have players moving back home, be in that good a shape, that players families move to you!

Hid the norm smith after being presented with it , wanted to be the same as the other 22 players and not stand out. Says a lot about the guy and how team oriented he is.

Matured as player like others in last 2 years

    A great touch wasn’t it.

Mind you, I be disappointed if he didn’t:- a lot of other role players, and self-less games allowed him to play so well.

ie Clarry manning Bont in 3rd qtr

Labs are friendly dogs. Trac has some Lab like qualities but I saw a touch of Doberman in his eyes on GF day.  More of that and he will move beyond "highly respected" and into the "greatly feared" category.

It’s a bit counter-intuitive, but I also love how fair he is......you never see him try any Selwood type cheap shots, or wrestling etc, despite being ferocious at the ball.

Assuming that it’s a current Melbourne-listed player as your anonymous source, then I’ve narrowed it down to the following suspects as follows:

It’s not these folks talking about themselves in third person, hopefully:

    Ben Brown
    Bayley Fritsch
    Luke Jackson
    Christian Petracca
    Jake Bowey
    Christian Salem
    Steven May

While some paraphrasing is to be expected, based on the comments on Jackson – “could be anything that boy” and Petracca – “incredible development since being drafted” – I would deduce that it’s not any of our younger players, further ruling out:

    Kysaiah Pickett
    Trent Rivers
    Tom Sparrow
    Toby Bedford
    Kade Chandler
    Kye Declase
    James Jordon,
    Bailey Laurie
    Fraser Rosman
    Daniel Turner
    Deakyn Smith

On Ben Brown: “a steadying factor for us”. Luke Dunstan has been with the club for all of a week, and wouldn’t be referring to the MFC as ‘us’ in past assessments. On a similar note, there’s probably a couple players who would likely feel more comfortable referring to the grand-finalists as ‘the team’ rather than ‘us’, having not contributed much to the season.

    Luke Dunstan
    Majak Daw
    Marty Hore
    Mitch Brown
    Oscar Baker

    On the flip-side, I imagine the hard-luck stories who did contribute to our season, but missed out on a medallion through selection, would still be a tiny little bit bitter and not so effusive in their all-round feel-good praise;

    Jayden Hunt
    Jake Melksham
    Joel Smith
    Sam Weideman

I love them all to bits, but our other core midfielders can barely string a coherent sentence together, let alone the eloquence of describing Trac as a “consummate professional”

    Clarry Oliver
    James Harmes
    Jack Viney

That leaves a group of just ten suspects. I’m going to rule out Tom McDonald, on the grounds that I still sense some ideological and dietary tension with Brown that doesn't gel with the "incredibly nice person" assessment, and Charlie Spargo in that he doesn’t seem the type to speak out of school, if at all. Harking back to the Petracca comment, in having learned to “re-set” after setbacks, sounds very much like Goody-speak coming from a more senior leader, so I think Harrison Petty can be struck off too.

Yet, judging by the array of comments, half specifically referred to the competitive nature of our defenders, including knowledge of and reference to May’s hamstring tear, as compared to more generic comments on others, so I’m going to guess it was possibly someone stationed in and familiar with the back half of the field. The source also felt Fritsch was “stiff to miss out on the (Norm Smith) medal”, which I doubt anyone in the near vicinity of Petracca or Oliver would express, unless they were being magnanimous for some reason or other . . .

    Ed Langdon,
    Alex Neal-Bullen

With Angus not ruled out due to his consistent efforts deep in defence (as well as you having quoted him from the "horse's mouth" in the past), that leaves a pool of only five remaining characters on my Guess Who board, together with Hibberd, Lever, Tomlinson and Gawn. My first question is, does you mystery player have a podcast?

Petracca - “incredible development since being drafted”

does that mean the source was at the club when he was drafted?

if not I would guess Lever

Agree with BoBo above, Jackson looks like an Adam Goodes type player. He is not there yet, and he has a LONG way to go to get anywhere near Goodes, but his midfield attributes, aerial ability, burgeoning ruck work, and aggressive 2nd efforts hint at something rare.

I am not a fan of huge contracts - either financially huge or duration huge - but we simply have to keep this bloke.

    It’s a good comparison.

goodesy first year he didn’t play a game. His second year, he averaged a goal, 12.8 disposals, and 9 hit-outs.

    won his Brownlow’s in his 6th and 9th year’s

Not saying we wait but he hasn’t arrived yet imo, not at the level where you paying him the big money, we have at least 8 players who need to get there cut before him.

The centre clearance goals in the 3rd would have happened with or without Jackson there, he actually didn’t win any of those hit outs and in most didn’t even influencing the contest. compare to Gawn who not just wins most hit outs but does to advantage. Great Jackson was there no one can take that way but dont pretend it wasnt 90% down to Viney trac and Oliver.

That is the risk, but equally possible he plateaus for a a few years, until he is getting the majority of the ruck duty we just don’t know.

sure he was speculative when we drafted him, but that is not the current situation....shown more in 2 seasons than even Jason Taylor could have imagined:- and all this before his body has even developed.

On “trac” to be our best player in a few years:- as a club we can’t afford to do anything other than pay him the respect he deserves.
