Yep, all good points (although I wasn't the one who raised the government aspect).

I should have been clearer, I didn't mean what I wrote to be just about anonymous racist comments, it's about a broader issue of the moderation and responsibility of the social media companies.

And I don't think social media companies will act due to the articles, more that once action starts to get serious in demands being made of social media companies; the media, public and documented cases are already there to support the cases brought against them.

Sam Harris's podcasts go into this issue regularly. Anyone interested should listen to the one about Child Sexual Abuse Material, usually misnomed as Child Pornography -- a tough listen generally, but enlightening regarding the willingness or lack of it of big tech to do something about it.

Turns out that Facebook is doing good work up to a point -- questions remain about the level of resources devoted to it given their astronomical revenue. But as for the others.... they are doing fundamentally nothing. There's very little incentive.

One solution posited by Scott Galloway #189 is to break them up and force competition upon the market. That way, freedom from bovine excrement could be a feature that many of us would gravitate toward, leaving the rear-orifices alone in their own little bubbles, salivating over each other's ignorance.

  2. There’s a bunch of intelligent stuff being said here. And I reckon it’s fundamentally all correct; we’re all just ruminating over the details.

We need to play consistently at a high level of energy to produce the work rate that applies the pressure that is the key to Goody’s system. When the fire doesn’t burn bright, as in yesterday, everything goes awry and Goody doesn’t appear (and that may be just an appearance) to ring any changes to do anything about it.

Before the game, I thought the dogs looked really up and about and we looked a little flat. Knew then we could be in trouble. But, at half time, I backed the fact that we were in front to mean that we had the grit to pull us through. Woops. No grit.

What I find myself thinking again and again at these times when we get busted open is that the team doesn’t seem to realise it. Part of me says that’s got to be bollocks, but it keeps happening so another part of me insists it isn’t. Team psychology is weird; there are days when you just ain’t got it. But the best sporting teams have a player who can rise above the psychological milieu and spark a fire, a change. Cotchin does it for Richmond. Remember when Warne came on to bowl, or when Richards came in to bat? Didn’t matter the situation, it was a new game.

We don’t have a tool, a match metaphorically, on the ground or in the box that can spark a fire. Maybe one will develop...

So today was a very good example of what happens to the systems and zones when the work rate isn't up to scratch.

How many of you think that it's incumbent on the coach to shift things in game versus trusting the systems will right themselves and empowering the players to lift their performance in order for things to be successful?

It's an interesting question, because I'm inclined to think if you're going to play a system that relies on pressure, if the players don't bring it, there's really no amount of flicking the magnets around that will change the result.

I’m basically with you, but flexibility is a desirable trait; when a game is going down the poo hole, plug the hole with X, Y or Z.

Then he'd have to go into the draft/pre-season draft and he's up for grabs to anyone. This virtually never happens though, so not worth entertaining. I think there's going to be a lot of reports of players refusing to sign contracts through the media, but really at the moment it's hard for them to sign as they don't know about list sizes/salary caps. The week that is announced look for a huge amount of re-signings.

    Gotcha.

Confusing. They say the primary reason for Google’s success where Yahoo failed was and is the simplicity of the UI. Only one thing you can do: search.

Yeah, you've got it backwards. We wouldn't have to compensate GWS for Williams, the AFL will just give them a draft pick, whole we'd have to trade for Saad, unless he went to the drafts, but he won't do that. Essendon are horrendous to deal with and will want Trac, Gawn and Oliver for Saad.

    Ooh....

What if Saad refuses to sign a new contract with them, which is what media suggests at the moment?

    the peptides

darcy 'ellen' parish is out of contract and i would add him to our collection of ex-peptide players we've traded for second round picks and give them a chance to regenerate their list, but i doubt they'd be keen to do this; also expecting cats to use one of their three of this year's firsts that they hold for him. they've never given irving mosquito a 'go' but he looked to be the sort of zippy forward we would be interested in and you can't imagine he'd cost much as, well, he has no exposed form. if anthony mcdonald-tipingwuti was available i'd probably be keen, but i refuse to believe he'll want to leave after hemming and hawing about doing so at the end of the last season. while saad is out of contract you've got to assume he's weighing up options

    preferences: saad, parish, mosquito

possible trade: hawks' future 2nd for parish

If Saad is out of contract, that’s gotta be cheaper than Williams as FA, or do I have something [censored] backwards?

    I saw this.

IIRC, they were discussing the ability of teams to generate scores from their forward halves, as well as from their defensive halves.

The analysis suggested that Geelong, West Coast and Richmond were in the top bracket for both, whereas Port and Brisbane were only in the top bracket for one of them (I don't remember for Brisbane, but for Port it was scores from forward half).

Essendon would be a side which traditionally under Worsfold generates scores from its defensive half, as a counter-example.

Their argument was that successful sides can do both, which is as close to Plan A vs Plan B as you'll get.

Obviously with us we know what Goodwin wants: aggressive forward half press, high % time in our forward half, turnovers in our forward half, generating scores (and limiting scores to our opponent). The knock on us, under Goodwin, has been whether (like Port this year) we can generate winning scores when the game isn't played in our forward half. Our win over Collingwood was hugely important on this issue because we didn't dominate time in forward half (at least I don't think so, I haven't seen figures), yet we didn't go to water but instead were able to absorb, rebound and score.

If we can now have the confidence that our system is beginning to hold up well enough to ensure we can generate scores from anywhere on the ground, that is IMO the missing step to taking us beyond what we were capable of achieving in 2018.

So, there’s evidence that we can join G, WC and R in sharing those characteristics. That’s as good news as we’re going to get, assuming those stats really are as key as the show asserted. But what, then, happens when these teams meet? I’ll have to go back and watch the G v WC game a couple of weeks back...

There's probably been some research done somewhere, but whether it's coaching, being CEO of a company or leading a country (or hosting a daytime TV show. Hello Ellen), I suspect you can get away with authoritarianism while you're successful. For everyone else, it probably doesn't work. And similarly, I suspect it doesn't work once you cease to be successful.

Swings and roundabout, though, so we have to be vigilant. Authoritarianism is rife outside the West...

Interesting that he is your favorite player Luci. I have found myself expecting more from Salem each year and i reckon he has not come on as most of us wanted or hoped.

Leaving aside the trade that got him to us which only complicates matters, i honestly believe he hasn't delivered what i personally hoped he would when we first bought him in. I was genuinely hoping he would be a backline version of Adem Yze. Not just because of the left foot, but the speed and skill that OOZE bought to the team. Unfortunately Christian has lost quite a bit of his initial speed, and takes some of the shortest steps in the league. Im not saying he is cowardly. Quite the opposite as he is as hard as a cats head, but after his repeated hammy injuries his gait is as short as anyone in the AFL, so he looks fast due to his cadence, but the short stride he takes means he is nowhere near as fast as he looks. Add to that the dinky little kicks he is famous for and i am a bit disappointed that he has not reached the heights i thought he could. I was hoping for a line-breaker. He is far from that.

Salem has never (IMO only) been considered as a massive loss when injured despite his obvious skill.

If someone who followed him more closely had info that could change my mind i would be happy to see it, but my immediate impression is that he isnt one of our "indispensable" players.

Is better suited to delivering the ball inside 50. We need a Zac Williams or Adam Saad at HB to facilitate that...

  11. Great answer.

I’ve been thinking that maybe these past few weeks is exactly what the doctor ordered for the players: games that prove to themselves that 1. we are capable of playing the way the coach wants, and 2. what the coach wants will work if the players buy in, trust it, and go at it with energy.

In that context, the next couple of games are about belief in the face of genuine opposition, one team pretty much even with us and the other having played significantly better this season so far.

  12. In the wake of the victory against the Filth, I have a few questions for the tacticians. Are we winning because:

    1. The players are implementing Goody’s tactics better?

    or

    2. The tactics have changed?

    or

    3. The opposition has been poor and we are getting away with tactics that better opposition will easily counter?

  13. If he keeps contributing like he has the past three games then keep the guy. If he has to play in the middle to play well, then play him there.. if we aren’t playing him where he plays well, trade. At the moment we’re playing him where he plays well and we are bagging points, so I’d say he’s fine and all is well.
