  1. On Sunday, 21 October 2007, saintsational claimed the “big carl’ trophy for the first time in three meetings, scoring 14.10.94 to pip demonland/demonology by 5 points. We ended with 13.11.89. We wasn’t robbed, but gee we were stiff. The sun was hot and the footy action was hotter. No saints supporter could doubt the commitment of our blokes, and we could not doubt theirs. It may sound like heresy, but I am sort of glad that they finally won. They were stiff to lose to us in the very first game, and we want these social games to keep happening. Victory after victory would soon become boring - to victor and vanquished alike – so, in a way, I am pleased that I did not have to lug big carl back home to the bush. We had sufficient numbers, but the sainters had far too many. We generously agreed to accept some of their players to even up the benches, and they generously gave us 4 (very) good players, who played their guts out for us. We would never have got so close without them IMO. Shannon and the 3 Spinner brothers – thank you. (The scary thing here is that these guys will be playing against us next time). First quarter. In the first quarter, the sainters charged out of the blocks with 3 unanswered goals. It looked like a massacre in the making. They had some excellent mid-fielders, and one player in particular (Ilsy, No.15) who obviously plays quite a few grades above inter-forum footy. I read on saintsational that he is trying out for the scorpions, and I wish him well. He certainly presents as a complete footballer, who can get the ball, use the ball and kick goals as and when required. Recovering from the shock, we started to make some forays forward. But most of our guys had not played with each other before, so there was not much system, and lots of rushed points and rebounding by the opposition. But our backline, which was tight and solid all day, was rebounding as well, as the sainters broke down, not so much at half-forward as at full-forward, reminding me of the VFL games of my youth. Finally, fuzz broke the deadlock with a goal against the tide, and then our acting captain, melbournefc, added another after a good build-up. But we were still playing catch-up footy. At quarter time, the sainters were up by 17 points, 5.3.33 to 2.4.16. Second quarter. In the second quarter, the second half of the first quarter was revealed as close to the truth. This was a contest and an arm-wrestle. Our back-line was overworked, but super solid. Alex (mate of mickrocks) became the first of many to run with the sainters’ No.15, doing a godfrey on their judd, and doing it well. Madness moved into the ruck, and we started getting first use of the ball. The forward-line started to function as a team, and all over the ground we started to trust in the ability of the blokes in front, running or leading and calling for the ball. Team goals came to mickrocks and joseph (spinner). Bucking the trend, imtoohot ran most of the length of the field, avoiding 8 opponents (and 4 of his own enraged team-mates) to slot a beauty. But the sainters had their own champions as well, and were just as determined in the unforgiving heat. The second term was dead even, and we went into the main break still 17 points down, 8.5.53 to 5.6.36. (Have to break to make some phone calls for work – will try to finish tonight)…
  2. sorry with the delay in the match report... still stuck in melbourne and away from my computer... hope to post a full report on wednesday night... strenuously deny the allegation that I suggested the singing of the song after the loss... very, very proud of the efforts of all of our players, coaches and helpers... we will get them next time...
  3. bold up legend, who's bringing extra water... deers from demonology will also be bringing bulk water... thanks, people... has anybody mentioned SUNSCREEN ??
  4. DON'T FORGET SUNSCREEN AND WATER !! (how's that, mfc ??) congratulations on the organisation job you have done... great stuff !!
  5. mclean4brownlow is another scratching... can't get out of cricket... no change rooms, I'm afraid...
  6. sorry, mfc... bananas is a late scratching... he tells me he has had a better offer, would you believe ??
  7. good luck with the exams, freak... unless the sainters take it from us, I will contact you to arrange delivery of "big carl" in the next few weeks... I will have the result engraved first...
  8. becks posted on this thread on september 27... my attempted pm tonight says there is "no such member" ?? what the ??
  9. hey, mfc... have sent a pm to all the missing... have already heard back from brey9186... unfortunately, he is unavailable...
  10. "I don't know what you're talking about..." well, jaded, enough of us saw your original, unamended post threatening to "PROVOKE" posting rights...
  11. " As long as you don't revoke them." If you are provoked, jaded... into revoking diablo's posting rights... I am sure we will all understand...
  12. thanks, legend... forum footy games are exempted under the health dept regs...
  13. I will offer to pm the missing on friday night in case that helps... but it is a concern...
  14. lexl does not post on here, mfc... (in fact he does not post anywhere since his self-imposed exile from demonology)... but I spoke to him today, and he can be bolded...
  15. hope you get more game time this match, oxxx...
  16. recent pics of the state of glenferrie oval just posted on saintsational... and a weather report for next sunday... 23 degrees and fine...
  17. OK, well, I've been wrong before... how about asking your mate if he wants to play again this year ?? and, btw, how did you guys get involved in last year's game ?? (these little mysteries keep me awake at nights)...
  18. "is Bradley's a seperate person??" hey, mfc... I am guessing that bradley's is scotty's little brother's mate... therefore mitch's mate... QED... btw, the deal has been done on the after-match function... sainter's sponsors will be supplying sausages and bread and tomato sauce... dees' sponsors will be supplying the beer... people who want anything more esoteric to eat or drink should bring it themselves...
  19. "my brother and i might come down and make an appearance" most welcome, son... last year I remember the very young guns were scotty's little brother and scotty's little brother's mate... are you one of them ??
  20. "Not much we can do about other sister threads ie: Demonology/Saintsational.... I'm assuming the Saints have the numbers and will literally all just show up on the Sunday?" O, yes, mfc... the sainters will turn up in great numbers... how goes your plan to make sure our numbers actually make it this time ??
  21. "Hi Rollo"... hey, mfc... got big carl back from the engravers today, with our last victory endorsed... harder work is promoting interest in the sister threads on demonology and saintsational... the thread on demonology (perhaps predictably) keeps falling off the board... but so (less predictably) does the thread on saintsational...
  22. hey, mfc... bananas from demonology has also volunteered to help out with a non-playing role... he does not want to be recorded on the team sheet, but I know we will be greatful for his assistance...
  23. "I might actually come and watch..." you will be most welcome, dees 08... at this stage, it looks like the sainters will be supplying the food for the after-match BBQ, and the dees will be supplying the beer... sponsors on both sides will mean that there will be no cost for people who turn up to play, help or watch... weather-permitting, it should be an enjoyable afternoon...
  24. "Gentlemen...Cheers until next time!" I liked the start and the end, WJ... it's the bits in the middle that I did not quite have in mind... but never question the coach's methods, they say...
