  1. "find some room"... judging on reputations and past performances, that whole bench looks pretty talented, I must say... good to see freak and pringle have posted... so who's missing ?? diesel, rivvo, jimi9, mclean4browmlow (and his big brother, scotty) come to mind... anybody else ??
  2. "find a ruckman who's taller than 5'11" this time... for all that, WJ, I recollect madness (in particular) did a great job in the ruck last game... but fear not... even if wise's mate (blessed hands) does not confirm, I have just checked my emails and cribbes tells me he is a definite starter... redleg, cibbes tells me his 3 mates are not KPPs, but handy and dependable back line players... more importantly, hards, their game names are animal, woody and duthie...
  3. "3rd year in row..." gee, dd, you would have to be the keenest participant who has never played...
  4. robbo24 has put me in touch with cribbes, and I have asked him to let me know his mates' names... also starting to get some replies to the sister thread on demonology... hatchman may be available to play, and will post again to confirm... Dee Knees will arrive late, but will bring an esky full of water... dzzz may make it to help out, and will also confirm later... we still need players and helpers, and particularly goal and boundary umpires... with the umpire jobs, we won't make people do them for the whole game, so feel free to volunteer for a quarter or a half...
  5. "Any news on a ground?" I think the problem, as HD from sainsational has said, is local councils and insurance... I think we are stuck with glenferrie oval, but I would be delighted to be proved wrong... ah, hem, nobody (surprise, surprise) has put up their name for goal umpy or boundary umpy... it's not fair that the sainters should have to supply all the officials... GOTO was goal umpire last game... any chance of a repeat performance, george ??
  6. "no positions left" don't worry, wrecker, our experience is that we can never get enough numbers... in one celebrated game, we had an over-flowing bench on paper but only 14 players had shown up by game start... if we can finally get lots of numbers, it will be stinking hot and lots and lots of rotations will be the order of the day...
  7. "CHF rotating the ruck like last time suits me." just heard, madness, that our 7' foot ruckman, cribbes, will probably not be available again this time... after your heroics last game, you may find yourself starting (and finishing) in the ruck...
  8. "been camping for 2 weeks"... hey, cactus... with all the rotations whispering jack and redleg pulled last game, I am sure people will end up where they can do the team most good... we might remind redleg (if he agrees to coach this time) that you kicked a lazy 7 in game(2)...
  9. "Definitely..." that's great spelling, doggo... matt and ben did the jumper proud I recall... but how could you be LESS FIT than your last game ??
  10. thanks, mfc... there are more players' names on the previous thread, including the elusive doggo24... I have just about finished the hand-written copy of our resouces project, and will try over the next few weeks or so to put it into computer-friendly mode for you, wise, hards, redleg and Whispering Jack...
  11. thanks, mfc... I asked hards to pen the team positions on this thread, because I thought you were going to be away this month...
  12. well done, guys... and thanks to hards, who has volunteered to display the team positions as we get more responses... hards also nominates wise monkey as captain, and I second the nomination... at this stage, we are looking at redleg as coach and wise as captain for february 17...
  13. with the blessing of the leadership group, and the agreement of saintsational, we have decided on Sunday, February 17 at 1.30pm... could somebody (hards ??) post the team (so far) on this thread, using the information on the previous thread... I volunteer again as an after-match function organiser... this time, we need to supply a goal and a boundary umpire if we can... additional players, helpers etc, please post early...
  14. good to hear from you, coxy... I have discussed sunday, february 17 with saintsational contacts and a number of our players and helpers... and there appear to be no problems with that date... any thoughts ?? if the date suits most people, can somebody tell me how it can be added to this thread's heading ??
  15. "2 extra players" can't be a bad idea, mfc, given our problems with numbers since the first game... I will never forget (game 2) old man diesel's face when told that he would have to play for 4 quarters... but then he did it in style I remember...
  16. "i'll definately be in for the next game..." "definately count me in..." we DEFINITELY will, doggo... how's your smoking and fitness levels ??
  17. season's greetings, mfc... yes, likely february... sorry for the delay, and I will certainly have the lists done for us by then...
  18. all good news, and welcome back wise and hards... I will get on to the contacts at sainsational in the new year... mfc, I have not forgotten our resources project, and it is on my list for the xmas/new year break...
  19. I have recorded your name, mm... the next game will probably be in february... we are all licking our wounds and waiting (I think) for wise monkey, our captain, to surface and demand revenge for our last narrow defeat... the problem (since the first game) has always been getting the numbers of players we need to fill a respectable bench...
  20. "but they are the aints" have you heard from the hawks forum recently, mfc ??
  21. and the assistant coach did a great job as well IMO...
  22. "Sack the coach." you are sounding like one of those footy forum know-it-alls, nasher... <_< pull both of your tasweigan heads in...
  23. "I'll come down and bring that ruckmen next game." you and cribbes will be welcome additions to the team, robbo...
  24. the post-game thread on saintsational is worth a read...
  25. (At half-time, I reflected on the fact that we had Whispering Jack as coach and redleg as assistant coach, which gave us a real edge. They had sorted out the match-ups and rung the rotations, and the sainters had no such organization. The third quarter was to prove their worth. The same has been said on the saintsational forum). Third quarter. The third quarter was ours. To the surprise of many spectators on both sides, we smashed the opposition in the mid-field, with the sainters NO.15 shut down, madness dominating in the ruck, and jimi9 and brownlowbruce running through the lines, seemingly without opponents. Stynes Factor was all over the field, kicking goals one moment and saving them the next. The whole team lifted a notch, and the backline got to watch for whole periods of play. Diablo was a revelation on the forward-line, with 2 majors for the term. Rivvo also scored 2, with strong leading and marking. Madness capped off his dominance with a goal as well. We smashed the sainters, took the lead, and built on it. Unfortunately, someone blew the siren. We went into the final break 9 points clear, 11.9.75 to 10.6.66. Surely it was all over, how far the dees ?? (A read on the saintsational forum reveals that my old mate/enemy, barks, gave the sainters one helluva rev-up at the break. This was their third attempt to win big carl, and the kitchen sink was coming at us !!). Final Quarter. There have been many games at AFL level when we have doubted that we got our money’s worth. This game, we would have paid for the privilege of watching many times over. The first 5-10 minutes did not see the demon dance continue. It was back to an almighty arm-wrestle, and the breathless spectators started to realise that the first goal was going to be very important. Finally, it was the sainters who got the goal, and then very quickly another, and we had (somehow) lost the lead. But there was no way we were going to lie down. The arm-wrestle set in again, with players on both sides commiting and running and putting in second and third efforts that belied belief in the stifling heat. Jimi9 was on fire, like he had duplicated himself so he could be in 2 places at once. Similar heroics came from too many other players for my pencil to keep up. It was more like watching tennis, with the court being the half-back lines and the net in the centre. Finally, after a great build-up featuring brownlowbruce and a host of others, jezza broke through for a goal that gave us back the lead with only minutes to play. Moments later, rivvo led well and marked strongly, his shot for goal our opportunity to seal the win. Unfortunately, his shot went wide. The sainters stormed forward again, but their goal was answered quickly by a beautiful goal from joseph (spinner) as the lead changed again, and again, with now just seconds on the clock. The sainters’ last desperate effort resulted in a freak goal (which I will leave it to others to describe) and the lead was theirs again. We were storming forward again (clear possession at half-forward) when the siren sounded. I have to apologise. There were too many new players, and the rotations too many, for me to keep up and give each player his due. It also did not help that most of our players sported number 5 !! Our back-line heroes can legitimately feel hard-done-by by my incompetence, and I invite other players and spectators to add to this (very) poor effort. All respect to the players for refusing to sing the song after the defeat… Many thanks to yipper, the umpire, who called it both ways and made less mistakes than his AFL counterparts… Coaches. As I said above, (very) good job. We need you for future matches. Legend (aka legend87) deserves a special mention for his assistance with the organization of the game at many levels. I don’t think we could manage without you, mate. GeorgeOTO… thanks for goal-umpiring and the great pics… Tim Staynes, the players really appreciated seeing Mr. Demonology there to support them… Knees, thanks for the extra water. People laughed at the amount we had at the start of the game, but we had run out at the final break… Finally, melbournefc, this was the best-organised forum footy game so far – great job !! (People on both sides have remarked how they have refrained from recruiting semi-professional players to play in these games. That would defeat the purpose. We would like it to remain that any forum player who thinks he/she can play a bit, can put their name down for a friendly but spirited game of back-yard footy).
