  1. Hi, I became a member years ago with suggested $100 contribution, which removed the ads and all was good. But recently after one of the crashes, I was unable to access the site for a week or more, long story short, I had to create a new account with a different email address. And of course the ads returned. So Andy let me know the account details and I’ll forward funds over.

It’s worthwhile reminding us every now and again of those recurring costs that have to be paid and the free expertise provided by Nasher. You all do an amazing job! What would I do with all those hours in my week without Demonland!

Whatley is one of the best commentators going around and possesses a very football brain.  He certainly knows his stuff and has the ability to communicate this without ego or fanfare.

He and SEN aren’t a great fit though imho.  Commercial drive-time radio calls upon a different skill set.

ABC grandstand and the Offsiders haven’t been the same without him.

I’ve listened and watched him for years on the abc, started as a big fan; he knows sport, articulates well, and commentated without ego.

However, over the years, I believe ego has become more prominent, he has become nauseatingly sanctimonious to the extent, I can’t listen to him on SEN (or the podcasts). Added to this, let me tell you, (those unfamiliar with him), he has a real bias against Melbourne, I know this for a fact.  Chip on the shoulder perhaps

So we lose by 48 pts last week and get ridiculed all week.  The Pies lose by 42 pts today and they get a pat on the back.

Both teams are on 3 wins and got blown  out of the water in the last qtr.

    Garbage!!!

We would only be news if we had lost. Just watch this week, there will be plenty of positive media talk about Collingwood &  Richmond et al, and negatives about Essendon, saints, Carlton, but not a word about us.

  4. Both captain and coach took full responsibility, even though it seems the key offender was Warner. But as leaders they recognise that with the prestige of their positions and the big bucks, comes ultimate responsibility for both good and bad.

Yes what a stark contrast to Hird.

Steve Smith (and Bancroft) will be welcomed back, in large, by the Australian public with open arms after serving suspension. Redemption and forgiveness will be theirs.

I wonder through hird’s iron clad ego, if he reflects on how things could have been.

A better question may be; are you a troll?

I do wonder if Gump owns a fiddle though. Empires and all that.

No not all, just an innocent Demonland life member who has wandered over, because it was at the top of the list of those unread.

Don’t worry, I won’t come back, I’ll leave you to it

I too hated what the USA stood for, until Trump came along.

Bush invaded Iraq based on nothing, Obama nurtured and fostered ISIS,  Hillary destroyed Libya which laid out the red carpet for the islamic invasion into Europe.  Gaddafi himself warned the US that Libya was a 'firewall' that would protect such an invasion. So what did the Obama admin do? They killed him and tore the country apart  knowing full well the havoc it would cause.  "We came, we saw he died." Chilling.

Trump has bought Kim Jong Un to the table, he wants peace with Russia, he has Saudi Arabia and other gulf states talking tough on terror for the first time and he wants to tear up the horrfiic Iranian nuclear deal.

As I said in an earlier post a few days ago - they want Trump gone badly as he is making all his predecessors look like the war obsessed criminals they were and are.  They would rather stir up a war with Russia than see Trump succeed as president (which he is doing regardless, in the face of a horrific media and deep state onslaught).

    He is a hero.

    Are you for real?

Most people are happy to put the boots into the ABC (Television and Wireless), but if it ever goes completely, then I guarantee within hours it will be missed. Try to imagine a Journalism standard akin to “Today Tonight” or “FOX News” as the ONLY News Source....

    Kill me now

The abc is my main source for news, -tv, radio and online.

What is guthrie’s motive SWYL? Is she wanting to broaden it’s appeal by dumbing it down? Or is it just cost cutting in response to the constant funding decreases?

    meanwhile I will miss Lateline...

SEN have been low rent for much of their existence.

They didn't start out that way. Started out with big names – Lyon, Brereton, Brownless, and big salaries. But quickly found out that while companies may fall over themselves to sponsor Collingwood and Essendon, they don't fall over themselves to sponsor a radio station that talks about Collingwood and Essendon. They ended up with a moth eaten collection of almost literally low rent advertisers. Jacques from Xenium Mortgages, anyone? In no time at all, Brereton left because they couldn’t pay the bills.

When Pacific Star bought in, there was an uptick in the quality of the advertisers but not an equivalent growth in audience. They have been hovering at 2s and 3s for a long time.

They recently tried it again. The “big stars”. Morning "dream team" with no chemistry. Garry promptly set up Hollywood Boulevard again and poor old Hamish "brother of" was let known, even on air, that he was not part of the boulevard. He was an onlooker. He was right to leave. And still ratings flatlined.

The "big names" talking about the same stuff as the no-names doesn't draw extra listeners, because the die-hards are all listening anyway.

Now Whately ... the big fish ... this is Francis Leach all over again. The "inna-lekshul" "egg head" "big words" toff.  Doesn't fit the demographic of tradies and bogans. It looks like they may be trying to change the demographic but realistically ... how much more can they eke out of the broader radio audience who mostly want old songs, daft DJs, and talkback lashing one political party or the other?

By the way, it's clear that Whately left the ABC in such a hurry because Hutchison said, I'm offering $$$$ but you need to make your decision today! The offer's only open until close of business. If you can't commit, we're not interested!

And yet Hutchison obviously was very keen on getting Whately. Hutchison is much more experienced in the wicked ways of the commercial world than Gerard who is a babe in the woods.

There may be some room for growth as SEN have increasingly gone all out on AFL. Bugger-all soccer, hardly any cricket ... recently when Chuck Berry was hosting, he said one day "there you go … we were supposed to be talking about cricket but somehow ended up talking about St Kilda."

They struggle to go for 5 minutes without coming back to AFL.

Whately looks like their gamble to pick up some disaffected fans of general sports. Can’t see it working.

Their bigger strategy might be that they want to get into live commentary of cricket, soccer, tennis, Olympics to add to AFL and basketball. With sports increasingly going the other way, into pay TV, free to air coverage for the die hards on SEN could look attractive!

People like Maher and Fine, for all their flaws, represent good value for SEN as they surely can't cost much but actually know how to keep the show moving. Guys like Lyon need a chaperone/MC like Hamish or Huddo.

Harford was a good performer and they let him slip.

Dunno why they dumped Ox. It’s taken years but he has grown into a polished radio man. Whereas “Marko” remained one dimensional, and that’s putting it kindly.

KB & Doc … KB is an inveterate stirrer and cannot resist an opportunity to do so. With solely him in the driver’s seat, it's somewhat amusing to see how many people he gets to bite. He is SEN's best performer and actually knows something about sport other than AFL, specifically, athletics. (Also horse racing, on the generous assumption that that counts as a sport.)

Doc generally makes for good radio and good entertainment.

KB & Doc for 3 hours ... No. Their Tuesday morning one hour love-in consisted of KB trying to bait Doc, and Doc slapping him down, rinse and repeat. 3 hours daily? No thanks.

Well done Mazer, I agree with everything you have written, and admire your effort and succinct writing style. You are so right about McLaughlin, his exclusion was embarrassing, I didn’t realise he left.

No they haven't, at least not entirely.

The non-union mine that I work at, pays $125k base for a shotfirer, whereas the (heavily) unionised nearby BMA mine gets paid $160k+ for the exact same job, on the exact same roster. Then add % based bonuses and Super on top. All for a yearly union sub of approx 3 grand or so. On the flip side, I dropped more than 30 grand after taking redundancy from my last job, and accepting the same job on a staff individual agreement.

All political parties have a image problem, because they are all led by the same kind of people. It's not unique to the ALP.

Can I become a shot firer?

  10. From this

“Apparently earlier today I was in a 'sel-harm' mood and instead of calling lifeline I went through with it and watched the last quarter of the final game against Collingwood.

Jack Watts absolutely stank it up that quarter. From failing to cover his opponent (cost a goal) to spectating and then failing to lay an effective tackle or smother in the goalsquare (cost a goal), to spectating and then arriving too late to affect a contest just outside the square (cost a point, luckily) to fluffing a forward run, to a whole string of really poor body language, it was terrible.

I don't have a personal problem with Jack Watts the way some people seem to, but rewatching his last quarter for us has left me with a much better understanding of why he had to be moved on.

Wishing him all the best (up to a certain point) at Port, and also confident we made the best decision possible at the time.”

    to this

“Inspired by Little Goffys post above i watched the entire R23 game.    ...missed it back then.

    Pies gave it their best.

IMO Watts’ poor last quater was a bit exaggerated above.

When we were thrashed in Q1 he was our best player, was good in Q2, maybe still our best by half time,,,  average third and poor last quarters.

I think the public nature of his unfair MFC treatment foolishly reduced his trade value for us.

Here’s wishing Jack every success at Port Adelaide!”

nothing is ever black and white

Whately will be missed by listeners on the ABC. But they are unlikely to change with him.

Both are not used to private section endorsement interruptions and it will be interesting how  this works.

i feel that we will see Gerard sink to mediocracy while some previously unknown will seamlessly replace him on ABC.

Yes it’s interesting, Whateley was reported today as saying he won’t be changing his style and management don’t want him to,  the plans for the station reaching a much broader audience was the appeal to switch.

But as already said, outside afl season, growing the audience will be tough.

Agree with this and for this to be needed to be addressed at the AGM is a concern.  Deal with it in house keep it in house don't let others get wind of a story that should be dealt with and put to bed.

Goodwin should tell his sports science team and Dave Minson to take a spell from training this week and turn the clock back to your 100 x 100's, put the balls away and have the flock them to death sessions.

It was addressed at the agm in response to a member question.

And really, people care what Danny Frawley thinks???
