I'm reluctant to post but I will give it a go.

Last year when we were winning the game was a lot slower paced. There were a lot more contests, and ball ups etc. That is where we excelled. Like you said we are still winning the ball

The biggest difference as far as I can tell is that the 666 allows fast scoring. We can not send extra players to contest at ball ups any more basically meaning the game has sped up. For example last year we were sending 2 or 3 from the back line to the centre contest, which you're not allowed to do now. This slowed the game up

So what does that mean? It means the game is more open. We are getting exposed in transition for a lack of pace - we are too slow, and our ball use is terrible so we can't retain the ball. Other teams just sit back and defend, wait for us to turn it over and out run us.

This was a problem last year as well, but we found a way through contests to slow it down.

Now it isn't as all as simple as that, but that's basically how I see it.

We won't get any better until we improve our defensive set ups (Lever and May come back) and we need pace all over the ground. We have too many slow, poorly skilled one pace players, too many inside mids, all our talls are slow.

Our inside 50 efficiency is embarrassing, teams are consistently out running us, teams score so easily against us because we defend so high and we are too slow or we turn it over in really bad spots.

Jones cops a lot on here but at least he is willing and able to provide run which isn't his natural go.

Anyway there is a lot of work to do for this group, I honestly can't see them getting better this year. We are too slow and too portly skilled.

Thank you AFL for opening the game up and keeping the big teams up the top. (although I am happy to see the Suns and Saints win a few games)

And I agree with @Redleg the Blues will beat us easily

So, my question is.... why have most other clubs accurately predicted the implications of the 666 rule, adjusted their game plan accordingly, taught the players, who in turn have mastered it, and... we have not?

  2. Out.  Unfathomable skill errors: kicks straight to the opposition, dropping uncontested marks, continuously handballing under pressure (skills aren’t up to it this year)

I haven't a clue what to say. It's been a terrible day personally with some terrible news this morning and this has really just nailed it. I came to the game today to get a breather from all that was happening today, and the sad part is I don't regret it. Yep that's right, I would still rather get down to the g to see our beloved Dees belted just to escape from reality for a few hours :(

Full bellies, that's the bottom line right now. Thinking the improvement comes naturally, fluffing up basic fundamentals. Looks more like 2014 than ever right now.

The gameplan is fundamentally flawed and there is absolutely no point in denying it. When the first 5 of their scoring shots came from 6 inside 50s and we almost always as a result of us pressing high and caught out back? Well, it's time to strip back the BS.Troy Chaplin, I'm not one to call for a man's job but there has to be some serious scrutiny here because otherwise what metrics are we using to measure performance?

We've talked about this ad nauseam. We get a million inside 50s and never score while they get like an 80 % return. Game over, we just can't compete with that. And just hold off before telling me their efficiency ended at only 55%. Watch the game.

Not even gonna bother potting the poor performers. They know who they are. As for the positive contributors Salem continues to impress. I really liked Marty Gore's game I thought he showed a lot of courage at tense times. Gawn worked hard all game and Harmes was always in there. Fritsch really shows you what he has. In a backline where the pressure is on all the time he always uses it.

That's it from me. I'm not going go say something stupid like I won't be back this season because it's a total lie. Stay strong people.

I agree with your thoughts. Best wishes for whatever is going on for you. You stay strong too

Sorry, I just can't abide that comment.  Ablett and Buddy loved their clubs, had played for them for 8-10 years and helped them win multiple premierships.  Both highly respected inside and outside their clubs.

No comparison to HWSMBN who played for a year then had a dubious knee injury.  He made it obvious he did not want to play in the red and blue, didn't get on with teammates, walked out on a trip to China and showed no respect for our club, President or fans.

No prodigal son scenario for him at the Dees, imv!

Late to the topic, I know, but this 100% correct

It's getting worse with the media too.

Yeah, listened to the age real footy podcast today, where good old Caro equated the mfc tanking to the Essendon supplements scandal. She took great delight on the back of the herald sun regurgitation of the sorry story, to vent her personal prejudice against the mfc, Cameron Schwann, chris Connolly, or all 3, despite actually no actual new evidence being released.

gave me a pain in the head

  6. Losing the way we did is no fun, and yes there’s are concerning aspects about our game, however...

    It’s round 1

i have faith that Goodwin et al, won’t throw the Towel in quite as readily, as so many on here are doing.

Chill people.  It’s a long, long season.

Perspective: ever fancied team this year has underperformed in round 1.

    Richmond was uninspiring.

    Collingwood was disappointing.

    Melbourne was lethargic.

    Adelaide was poor.

    West Coast were comfortably beaten.

Makes is slightly more bearable, that we are in that company

people come up with the stupidest conclusions, maybe that's why goodyhe traded him that's got nothing to do with it,  Hogan brought this clinical anxiety on himself by going from a team that's going to challenge for the flag to a team that's  going to be in the bottom 5 for the next five years no wonder he's got anxiety

Not sure if you’re serious; if you are, check out clinical anxiety on google, it’s no picnic

Niall and the rest of them can analyse the [censored] out of fixtures. It earns them a salary.

However, this competition will only be fair and just when each of the 18 clubs plays each other once, in order to qualify for the finals program - whatever that might turn out to be.

Until then, the fixture is flawed and a money making venture more than it is a reflection of last years clubs performance.

As noted by others, if we continue our upward projection we should be a strong contender for the flag no matter what the fixture deals out. The commercial side of it is great and a very important variable in club success so it’s pleasing to see the potential in that for season 2019. We need to perform for it to come into fruition however.

As Garry Lyon apparently said, time for the afl to grow up and do the 17 round draw.

Wont happen though, afl not likely to stomach the revenue loss, nor have the courage to do what is right

Am I going crazy but in what world is Lachie Neale worth more than Jesse Hogan?

    Like seriously....

1 is a decent mid who is an accumulator who has happened to win 2 B & F's at a rabble club whilst never coming top 10 in the Brownlow.

the other is a 23 year old key forward who has the best numbers at this age as any key forward in the league. Once in a generation player. The thought that Freo will get Hogan & Change for Neale makes me want to spew.

I simply do not get it....

    Nor do I

If Dockers finish 18th next year, Hogan walks into the draft and we get nothing.

Thank f*** for the Suns & Blues.

Hogan IS NOT A FREE AGENT NEXT YEAR

sorry to shout, but haven’t we gone through that several thousand times?

I’m sure the royal use to have a smear of jam in them, last pack I bought didn’t though.  Do you crack the chocolate that covers the marshmallow on your forehead before you eat them as well?

Malt'o'Milk are even worse. And naming those other biscuits 'nice' is the greatest misnomer of all time.

But getting back to the topic at hand, here's a thought. I agree with those who have said not to cave in. If a reasonable offer is not made, then keep Hogan. If Melbourne has an excellent season, JH may be encouraged to change his mind about leaving.

Don’t mind a teddy bear smothered with butter, yummmm

Jake Niall on The Age reporting that Carlton will be sending two second round picks to Sydney for pick 13, then on-trading pick 13 with their right to Shane McAdam to Adelaide for McGovern.

    Why would Sydney do that?

What the media thinks Hogan is worth should be of no consequence to us. If Hogan wants to go to Fremantle we set a not negotiable price. If it's not met he stays with us.

It will be interesting to see what Fremantle demand and get in return for Lachie Neale.

It would seem that Geelong have taken a firm line with Kelly. I hate Geelong but I do admire their recruiting strategies and success with recruiting. We need to take a leaf out of their book. We must not be pushovers.

Bit off topic I know, but I’m no fan of Geelong these days, but I think they are entitled to play hardball with kelly. Funny he’s so desperate to go home but is only interested in WCE. Disingenuous.
