MATCH PREVIEW & TEAM SELECTION - Round 3, 2016
Devil is in the Detail replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I do like the idea of Watts and Vandeberg as 2 tall, running, marking half forwards. -

I have thought for years that we are a dumb football team. -
Sorry, quality intercept marking defenders. I reckon 90% of the balls that went into OUR forward where intercept marked. Will require the ball carriers to lower their eyes and spot up these targets. Which, for a long time, our midfield/halfbacks have struggled with.
-
See what you are saying but 90% of the time when another tall zones off, especially ones with North's experience, the ball never comes to ground, the defenders mark it. Then launches a sling shot rebound.
-
Still think we need 3 tall forwards. The forward line looks a little short.
-
In the GWS game Nat Jones went behind the ball which I thought kick started the team. Wondering whether we would swap Vince and Jones. And probably prefer Hogs further up the ground.
-
Waite plays bigger than that. Reckon he has better and stronger leap at the contest than people of his size.

That is because according to them, that was the win that will turn Essendon's season around. They played so well to bet us. They fail to mention that we played a flaccid member. -
Who also have a guy called Stephen Curry who is shooting the lights out every match. But I understand the theory coming from a basketball background. The biggest thing with the zone defenses is working as a team. If a team mate gets beaten then the closet person needs to come across to help out. And if the next person gets beaten then the next person steps over to help. And so on. Then when the offensive push is stopped eg. stop the first switch, the defense must work hard to reset back into the original position and start again for the next offensive push. I reckon that our players stop the first offensive push and go awesome our work is done. Then they don't reset for the next switch.

The Melbourne game plan - 2016

I have always thought that teams have needed 3 tall, strong marking forwards. One for the release kick out of defense, The other for the next kick which puts the ball 60 to 80m away from goals then one more for the final froward entry. With each kick ideally there should be a group of ankle bitters at the contest for the spilled mark. Doesn't have to be the same group of ankle bitters, but might be the the mids at the first one then the flankers and wings for the next then the flankers and the pockets for the next. This also gives someone like Hogan who has a massive tank to be the first tall option out of defense, then work his player over to get back to forward line for the second inside fifty option. Also allows any mids with a massive tank to work their opponents over by getting to each marking contest. Don't know whether this is too simple. -
If they are the match ups then Waite will have day out. Don't see Garland as a tall defender. See him as a taller small defender that can out mark smaller forwards.
-
I am wondering whether he is doing this from too far deep in the forward line, then the ball carrier doesn't have enough of a leg to get it over the back, then it ends up on his head
-
I don't completely agree. There were numerous times were we had a break away and then we decided to bomb it long on top of Hogans head. Don't know whether it is a combination of Hogan leading, then the ball carrier taking to much time to dispose of the ball, then Hogan doubles back and then it is kicked on his head. Or Hogans leading to early before the ball carrier has even looked up the field to spot an option and by the time the ball carrier has looked up for an option, Hogan is doubling back, then the kick gets put on Hogan's head Or whether it is combination of both or something else.

What's over there -
That is [censored]. His endurance is one of his strongest assets. We just have been playing as a stay home forward. Once forward line is sorted out he will play CHF and run the Sh!t out of his opponent.
