The best teams do. I remember back in the 80/90's we'd be with them in games, playing well, then all of a sudden we've lost by 7 goals. Geelong did it routinely during their golden years. 5 minutes would kill the game no matter how good the other team was playing. If you could bottle the magic that makes that happen you'd be rich (or if a true Demon give it to the club for free)

Wanted him gone for whatever we could get a couple of years ago. Thought he was talented, but a talented bust that we'd probably ruined. I am so happy to eat humble pie. So very happy. When the ball is in his hands I know that he will find the best option or kick the goal, he goes in when it is his turn, and players look for him when he calls for it. I dunno where this team will end up - far too many variables for for soothsaying - but most of them are tough. Not thugs, but see ball get ball, get in my way and it's your problem tough. And the toughest are still kids. Maybe they will get a flag, maybe they won't, but we'll win more than we lose and no C grade pretend tough will ever mention the words 'bruise free footy' unless he is talking about his side. That, right now, is gold. Yes they are young and sometimes bigger bodies grind them down, but they won't be pups forever.

Elite to me is the player that isn't just the one that gets BOG in wins, but also does it in losses. The one that when you are 5 goals down halfway in the third that is suddenly everywhere, and who does it too many times to be a fluke. Judd did it. Hird did it. Both Abletts did/do it. Carey, Flower, Buddy etc. A grade is great talent. Elite is genius.What is the saying? Talent does what it can, genius does what it what it must... I think Gawn is very very close to it, Viney might get there, and Petracca has that spark to be such a player and pass both. The rest mentioned are A or B. That's no slight on them, but elite is the player that when the ball is near them you stand up and watch only them because you expect them to do something sublime.

Stat heads are welcome to fact check and shoot me down on this but I seem to remember games under Neeld where we might only have one twenty + possession player... and these seemed to be the norm rather than the exception. Trenners tackles, does 1%ers, get the ball often and uses it well. I'm not sure what else needs to be said about him
