POSTMATCH DISCUSSION - Round 20
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Time to be brave and throw them around. I would bring Hunt into the middle as well as Salem. Tyson and Watts to Casey. Hannan and a mid from Casey into the team. Petracca to play as the third tall. -
Great to hear of a gutsy win. Looking for some run and possibly Weids. Who would be a chance?

POSTMATCH DISCUSSION - Round 20
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
We have too many one paced players through our midfield. We also have too many players who don't maximise their disposals. We played poor yet cost ourselves the game with 20 minutes of effortless, leaderless football in the first. In my opinion the drop in form of Petracca and Hunt two of our most dynamic players has coincided with our drop off recently. -
Would not be surprised to see Melksham for Hannan and thats it. In saying that we need to find some run and would not be surprised to see Stretch in as well. I don't care that he had some moments in the second half Watts should still be dropped.
-
Only MFC would fight like that for a full quarter and then lapse with 10 seconds to go. T-Mac dominating behind the ball with the wind just rubs salt in the wound from last week. Salem injury looked a season ender. The MFC way would be to kick 7 in the last quarter just like we should have last week. Oliver should be banned from hand balling until he learns to get the balance right. 3 times he was clear to kick and hand balled back into traffic.

You will not see a more putrid half of football by this pathetic excuse for a club than what I have just witnessed. Further heightened by watching the energy and smart play that got us 3 goals against the wind in the first 6 minutes. Where was the leadership passed that point is it all too hard once your opponent actually has a dip as well? I don't care how much we lose by show some heart and urgency and throw the magnets around to get things moving. Get Salem and Hunt into the midfield and try and attack the game and man. Put Watts behind the ball and see if he can redeem himself.
-
Out: Tyson for anyone who can spread both ways and get within 5 metres of hitting a target. Out: Watts for anyone who cares to play with any form of effort and application.
-
Well done guys we've worked hard for the first 8 minutes and we're 3 goals up. Let's now save our energy for the second. Pathetic.

Welcome to Demonland: Jake Lever
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to stevethemanjordan's topic in Melbourne Demons
Lever went as a mid first round picked and if you re-ordered that draft now you would have him at worst 3rd behind Trac and Heeney. He is a player type that will only get better as his body matures. Our first pick is likely to be around about where he got picked that year (but not better) yet some think that and some steak knives will get the job done. It will take our first pick and some serious quality unless we put a deal forward that means we could walk him through the draft (unlikely). Whilst I am sure we wont entertain it unless he wanted out,the Hogan article aside from the emotion attached is not that far off logic. We have proven we can kick good scores without him and this was before we unearthed T-Mac as a forward option. We have proven we leak multiple goals against tall forwards and need to improve the quality of our transition from defence. A lot on here are unsure whether O-Mac and Frost are the answer. I assume some on here are worried whether we have already seen the best of Hogan. It could be argued Lever is more important to us having a tilt than Hogan. Granted you would want to keep both but if push came to shove........ -
Win today (which I expect) we are likely to storm home with confidence the last 3. Lose today I would not be surprised to see us whimper home 1 and 3 with a bad taste in supporters mouths. We played our best month of footy with Jones, Viney, Tyson, Vince, Lewis playing (bar Jones missing West Coast). Midfield depth and maturity is what drives consistency and quality. Hoping this allows Trac to go back to prowling the forward half and Salem to be released onto a wing (one of the only players that understands what lowering your eyes means).
-
Those stats are hard to argue with but the query is do we think developing the two kids that have 88 games between them is the answer or do we need more., Lever is a jet but as I have stated where is the examples of him playing on and beating number 1 forwards or even the second tall? He is played as an intercept and usually Adelaide leave Talia and Hartigan or Kelly to the two main jobs.
-
Out: Hogan, Trengove, JKH In: Jones, Vince, Smith Smith to come in to play on their third tall. Time for Hannan to stay forward, Watts to back up in ruck and Trac to relieve with short midfield stints.

Work rate and ability to stick a tackle was non-existent. We clearly expected the wind to do it in the last and then realised too late that urgency may be required. Just when you think we have culturally turned the corner games like that prove we still get ahead of ourselves. Lewis and Hibberd are paid to be experienced heads in games like this and made some crucial errors in decision, skill and application. -
Tough conditions which has brought us down to their level. They are working harder and our tackling has been poor. Need more from Viney and our second string mids (Tyson and Oliver playing their role) and some hard work and controlled decisions from our backs next quarter.

No Jetta in the team of the week and Gray gets in after Jetta pants'd him forward and he was forced to get cheap one-twos as a mid in the second half. The team of the week is so driven by looking at the stats not the game it is a bit of a joke. -

O-Mac played 15 games last year and has played 15 games so far this year. A good time to compare statistically where he's at. Marks up 20% and 1%ers up 30% for the same time of year is pretty significant improvement. My general observation is outside of what the stats show he is making less errors with and without the ball. 2016: Marks 117, 1%ers 85 2017: Marks 148; 1%ers 124 -

His first quarter highlights of his only 5 kicks below (only had 6 for the rest of the game(. Times are quarter countdown. Q1 18.16 Tyson kicks it from D 50 towards the middle of the ground to Ebert Q1 11.32 Tyson kicks from wing 40m down ground to contest halved. Q1 7.44 Tyson takes handball from Hogan and kicks point from 40m. Apologises for not hitting up Petracca. Q1 5.12 Tyson takes ball just inside 50 and kicks to top of goal square to Wines Q1 00.37 Tyson takes handball from Jetta D50 and kicks it over JKH to halved contest -

Its almost like calling out one missed defensive spoil to highlight a players deficiency isn't it? How many contests did O-Mac lose for the rest of the game? Needs to fix where he lands his spoil (please not central) but rarely beaten in the air recently. Big challenge for him against Brown or Waite next week but a lot better than given credit. -

I am not a Tyson hater but maybe we should go and look at his other 10 kicks. His disposal yesterday in most part was deplorable but he won the ball well and attacked the contest with vigour. His disposal was very similar his first couple of games after missing early in the year. Another one better for the run. -
Jones will clearly come straight back in when ready. Yesterday proved we needed to bring quality in to ensure the win. Jones in should not be the difference next week. Give him another week and leave the team settled, then least performed mid against North goes.

Good news. Great clubs understand that development is not a straight trend upward. I have been disappointed with Billy's output this year but it has mainly been curtailed by the coaches pushing him to becoming more attacking with his disposal and working on his inside game. This will make him a better player in the end but has likely halted his game this year. Great to see us validate his work with 2 more years.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 18
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
You're assuming a guy that has hardly played a game with these guys coming into a team fighting for his career and a place in the side would be able to provide required experience and leadership? Now is exactly the right time to give him a run at it for his future and the betterment of team. Hoping he plays off half back and he has a Liam Jones like resurrection of his career.
