No idea why that is happening. It definitely isn't happening for me. I have tried it a number of times and whenever I sign out I stay signed out. May I ask what browser you are using and is it up to date?
  4. The Casey Scorpions opened their 2013 practice match series by producing yet another narrow victory to overcome a fast finishing Frankston Dolphins outfit by two points in a thriller at Casey Fields. Despite the loss, the close result was a credit to the stand alone Dolphins who had to contend with a team that had no less than a dozen AFL listed players and almost beat them. The match started in fine conditions and the Scorpions opened strongly with the first goal to big Jake Spencer. They dominated the first ten minutes of play before the Dolphins, in their third practice game, counter-attacked with two quick goals to grab the lead. The Scorpions regrouped to hold sway for the remainder of the term with goals to Brayden Fowler and Aaron Davey, who was in everything, giving them an 8 point lead at the first break. The conditions worsened quickly as dark clouds began to cover the ground bringing a steady drizzle that turned to rain in a second quarter which saw the Scorps continue to dominate without doing that much damage on the scoreboard. The lead was out to 15 points at the half and thanks to early goals in the third to Tim Smith and Davey, Casey suddenly held a game high 28 point lead. However, the visitors did not give in but instead, they persisted, raised the pressure levels all over the ground and played more direct football as they slowly reeled back the deficit. By the final break Frankston looked confident and trailed by only 11 points. The Dolphins continued where they left off in the early stages of the final stanza and broke through for two goals to take the lead for the first time since the opening quarter. The Scorps were stung into action and indigenous pair Nev Jetta in defence and the dangerous Davey up forward got them home, the latter with a great soccer goal and the former with some cool play under pressure down back. It was a nailbiter but the siren sounded with the home side just two points ahead, the narrow win a regular scenario at this ground over the past twelve months. The Scorpions have weathered some difficult moments during the off season and still bear the scars of those tumultuous times that had some reading the club its last rites following the collapse of its poker machine venture. While other VFL clubs are spending up big on recruits, only one newcomer, tall local lad Michael Boland from Cranbourne, made the senior team. He showed promise and kicked an important goal against the run of play in the third quarter to stem the tide when the Dolphins had taken the ascendency. The cheque books might be out of sight but a few loyal servants in Kyle Matthews and Evan Panozza are still there. Casey will also be relying on more improvement from the likes of Michael Riseley, Luke Tynan, Brayden Fowler and the enigmatic Tim Smith to progress this season. Youngsters Mitch Gent and Nathan Page were impressive. It took the club a long time to announce its coach for 2013 and Rohan Welsh needs an injury-free year from the Demons to enable his team to contend with some of the more free spending clubs in the competition. They face a real test against the Borough next week without the luxury of AFL players other than a few who might be permitted to play due to a return from injury. In the early game, Casey was down at half time by eight points but a five goal to one third quarter saw them home by 29 points. VFL Casey Scorpions 11.12.78 defeated Frankston 11.10.76 Development League Casey Scorpions 13.12.90 defeated 9.7.61 HOW THE DEMONS FARED Dominic Barry - a livewire who oozes potential. He looks the type who can cause damage when he gets out on his own but is lightly built and was brushed aside far too easily in this game. Will benefit from a year of learning the ropes at VFL level but don't expect to see much, if any, AFL action this year. Mitch Clisby - this was his first pre season hit out and he looked in his element. He got his hands on the footy and used it well to the team's advantage. Thomas Couch - hard at it in the middle but lacked a little in pace and his disposal wasn't great. If he plugs away, opportunity might come his way during the season but, at this stage he is behind the young midfielders as well as the other mature agers in Magner and M Jones. Aaron Davey - the classiest player on the ground and his use of the footy was top shelf. Has lost a bit in pace and got a fair bit of attention but was good around goal and deserved more protection from the umpires. At one stage, he was tackled when he didn't have the footy, then laid a perfect tackle on an opponent, then got crunched and still went unrewarded. He was one of the main reasons why Casey got up to win. Troy Davis - was solid in defence and mostly did the right things even during the pressure cooker moments in the final term. Has been criticised for his disposal but, apart from one crucial error, was quite good in this area. Michael Evans - worked hard in the midfield and around the ground. Has been out for a long time with injury problems but looks as if he might be able to force his way back into AFL contention if he can remain fit. Jack Fitzpatrick - flashed in and out in both the ruck and up forward. Moved well at one stage to take a nice grab in front of goal but let himself down with his kicking for goal. Neville Jetta - copped an early knock to the ribs but kept going all day and was cool under pressure in defence, particularly in the tense final quarter. I had him down as the team's best. Joel Macdonald - generally safe with the football down back and his experience was invaluable in the tighter moments. Jake Spencer - started well with an early goal but didn't dominate the ruck as one would have expected. Participated in a battle of ruck dinosaurs and broke even at best. Still awkward with his kicking and I'm just not sure where his career will go in light of the new ruck rules. Rory Taggert - like Evans, has missed a lot of football through injury. Looks a balanced footballer with a neat kick but still needs to put in a fair bit of work. Josh Tynan - has built up nicely since last year but is another who still needs a lot of work at this level.
  5. When I think back over the years, it's rather surprising the number of times the Demons have played in pre season matches up here in Queensland. I remember Jim Stynes coming up here for a game and wearing a cap to shield him from the harmful rays of the sun. I recall some steamy games in FNQ including one against the Lions that was played in cyclonic conditions and another occasion when I stood in the outer at Cazaly Stadium in Cairns one evening and was serenaded by the croaking of cane toads. Last year, I drove four hours to the Gold Coast through pouring rain to witness some horrible football played on a soaked Metricon Stadium. Despite the difficult conditions I never saw a team throw in the towel. This year's NAB Challenge game was played in hot steamy conditions under the noonday sun that was made solely for mad dogs and Englishmen. While I don't like making excuses, it didn't help Melbourne's cause to come out against a near full strength Suns outfit with a team bereft of its best key backs and forwards, a number of its midfield prospects and a few others of value and then go into a game in energy sapping conditions with a smaller bench and less rotations. Losing Colin Garland to a knock in the head didn't help matters either. Still, while I'm making excuses, there are no excuses for skill errors like missing easy targets, poor decision making and plain, scrappy football. With just two weeks to go before the season opener against Port Adelaide, Mark Neeld and his football department have the job ahead of them. Before looking at Melbourne's individual performers, I think it's appropriate to pay homage to The Maestro who was the difference between the two teams on the day. Gary Ablett Junior with his two goals and 24 disposals, mostly to his team's advantage was worth making the trip to the Coast even if he was on the wrong side as far as I was concerned. To have him in the side lights up any midfield and he alone outshone the entire Demon contingent in this area. Notwithstanding, it was Melbourne which started off the better of the two teams and the nine point lead at quarter time was something of an injustice to the visitors. However, by early in the second term, a fifty metre penalty to Mark Jamar, who had started strongly in the ruck, saw the Demons score their second goal of the term and race to a 21 point lead. Unfortunately, that was that as far a Melbourne was concerned. The Suns took over and bridged the gap to take a 2 point lead into the sheds at half time. After the break, the Gold Coast forwards took control of a weakened Demon defence with Garland off as a result of a head knock. Restricted in their capacity to make rotations, they withered and gave away five goals to one and the game was over at the final break. The team fought out the last quarter and did well to contain the Suns in the end. To that extent, it was at least a game played by the team under dress rehearsal conditions even if it lacked the intensity of the real thing. Jack Watts was close to Ablett for best on ground honours picking up 25 disposals at a high level of efficiency and was head and shoulders above his teammates. Skipper Jack Grimes (22 touches) and Nathan Jones worked hard but were used sparingly in the second half. Newcomers Matt Jones and Dean Terlich earned their keep and youngsters Jimmy Toumpas and Jesse Hogan provided hope for the future. So the preseason is over and, despite the grueling conditions, Melbourne played it out to the finish which is a damn sight better than North Melbourne which wimped out at the end of its rain sodden encounter with Hawthorn half a continent away. But all that matters little for the Demons. In the absence of someone like The Maestro in their midfield, the future still seems a long way away. 8. PENDULUM by The Oracle The nature of the NAB Cup dictates that, for a majority of clubs, it's more like a series of exhibition trial games and experimentation once the triple header season opener is out of the way. And so was for Melbourne in 2013. The NAB Cup campaign was over on opening night. It managed to accumulate an irrelevant four points (which the football world rightly ignored because it was the sort of game usually reserved for yesterday's venue at Casey Fields) but if there was a silver lining it had to be that the Demons only put in two poor quarters for the journey and they were undermanned in both of them. The first was against a fresh Richmond in the opening quarter of week one, the other in the the second term yesterday. Of course, that 10-12 minute patch against St. Kilda was a total disaster, reminiscent of all of the worst aspects of the past half decade. Melbourne fiddled with the ball, turned it over too easily and succumbed to pressure in the heat coughing up goal after goal. During that time the Demons were vulnerable in the midfield and gave away too many easy possessions (including an ungodly number of frees) that enabled the Saints to rebound with ease and dominate. In the batting of an eyelid the pendulum swung from a point where Melbourne doubled St. Kilda's score to exactly the reverse and the contest was over. I'm not sure what it means but during the rest of the game, the Dees were good but who knows these days, how much teams are really trying in exhibition matches of this sort? What we do know is that, of the combatants, it was St Kilda that took what was close to its best line-up to Casey Fields with a strong and dominant midfield and its small forwards dominating when push came to shove (Milne and Milera kicking four goals during that purple patch) while Melbourne either rested or was forced to leave out players through injury who will at least be under strong consideration for selection in most post positions on the ground. Three key position certainties were out of the action - Tom McDonald (defence) and Mitch Clark and Chris Dawes (forward). Given the contribution of the opposition small forwards to Melbourne's demise Nev Jetta and James Strauss would have been handy and Jordie McKenzie would have been able to annoy the living suitcases out of one of their dominant midfielders. And if you insert Jack Trengove, Sam Blease, Jack Viney and Rohan Bail into the midfield mix, you might just be able to blunt the sort of run on to which the team was subjected. Also rested this week was the kid from Clackline, WA Dean Kent who has impressed as a medium forward who knows how to kick a goal and who showed some promise in the earlier games. But what about those who took part and what about the other 65-70 minutes of the game? Melbourne started like a house on fire in the hot conditions with Mark Jamar owning the ruck and giving Nathan Jones and newcomers David Rodan first use of the ball. Two other recruits in Shannon Byrnes and Cameron Pedersen were giving the Saints plenty to think about and the Demons were out to a 22-point lead with the aid of the breeze by the halfway mark of the first term thanks to a 9 pointer from Lynden Dunn. They then lost the ascendency in the second half of the opening term and this lull in intensity probably set the scene for the Saints' revival in the second. Melbourne needs to learn from their relentless non stop push once they gained control. You rarely win if you cough up seven or eight unanswered goals to your opponent. The Demons fought back in the third but couldn't peg back the Saints' lead sufficiently to fight their way back into contention despite making a fist of it in the last when the hot and steamy conditions had taken the sting out of the match. The pendulum was never going to swing far enough for the Demons. Apart from Nathan Jones and Jamar (35 hit outs), Melbourne was well served by Lynden Dunn, Dan Nicholson and Colin Sylvia while Dean Terlich showed why he was plucked out of the SANFL to resurrect his career. However, if the day is ever going to be remembered for anything other than the bunfight needed to get out of the car park at the end, it will be for that period during which the pendulum swung so dramatically against a hapless Melbourne. For them to improve this season, the Demons will need to eliminate the lapses although we shouldn't forget that the nature of the NAB Cup means that the makeup of teams will vary and they definitely came up against a team that was much closer to full strength on the day. 18. THE LOST GAME by The Oracle How can you do a match report on a game you didn't attend, wasn't televised and was broadcast by a radio station that employs one-eyed hillbillies with a phobia about giving away the names of many of the visiting team's players? Easy, just quote the media reports on the following day. I'll start with Ashley Porter from the Age. Youngsters fire up battle of the battlers Porter's report contained one familiar Fairfax clanger of Wilsonesque proportions:- He called the ruck duel between Jake Spencer and Jarrad Redden a feature of the game which might come as a surprise to those who tuned in to 5AA whose commentators only mentioned the latter in describing the game's ruck contests. And if you think 5AA was bad for bias, cop this offering from the Andrew Capel in the Adelaide Advertiser:- Port Adelaide's young guns shine in narrow loss against Melbourne In South Australia, it seems that, even in practice matches, the spoils go to the loser. 20. You have the AFL app on your phone so presumably you'll be able to listen through there if tunein app switches off the 5AA stream.
  21. I normally don't post articles from the official site verbatim but I thought that this was a special case: from http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2013-03-01/help-find-imogens-guernsey
  22. FIVEAA confirmed to me via Facebook that they will be broadcasting the game on Sunday via the afl.com.au website.
  23. In the past 5AA in South Australia have broadcast the preseason games from Adelaide but I'm not sure whether they will be broadcasting the game from Renmark. I sent 5AA a tweet but they have not responded. They did respond last year when I sent a similar tweet. If anyone else wants to tweet them the same thing then that would be great. Surely they will reply to someone if they receive enough tweets about it. Their twitter handle is @1395FIVEaa UPDATE: FIVEAA confirmed to me via Facebook that they will be broadcasting the game on Sunday via the afl.com.au website.
  24. The AFL has decided to scrap a trial of the GPS in the Footy Technology which would assist clubs by complementing the data they already receive from the GPS on the players. The link below has a video featuring the Dees at training and interviews Neil Craig who is a big fan of the technology. If you are into conspiracies it could be inferred from the article that Champion Data, who supply the match stats for the AFL, may have had something to do with the trial being scrapped. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-02-25/afl-scraps-smartball-trial?utm_medium=RSS
