Correct me if I'm wrong but next year is our (Melbourne Football Clubs) 150th birthday not the AFL's. I know that MFC being around for 150 years also means that officially Aussie Rules Football would therefore also be 150 years old, but I have a distinct feeling that OUR birthday is going to be hijacked by the AFL by celebrating 150 years of football rather than that of the Melbourne Football Club.

Don't want to sound like a whinger but this 150 year birthday of our club is a massive opportunity for promotion and media recognition of the club. This could therefore generate more income from special events, sponsorship, merchandise etc. If the AFL as I believe is planning a whole lot of special events etc. for celebrating 150 years of Football we could find ourselves pushed into the background and missing out on a great financial and nostalgic opportunity.

My question wasn't over his post, but your attitude, you seem to want to have a go at everyone, but that's your choice and I don't wish to argue with you about it.

I wasn't trying to be negative. I was simply pointing out that I think a big financial and promotional opportunity may go by the wayside. I am very proud of our 150 years and a very passionate supporter and also one that does get sick of reading many of the very negative attitudes on this forum. Sorry if I also came across that way.

On the other hand, if the MFC and the AFL work on 150 year events together, it can create more exposure for the club.

No doubt they will be making a big fuss over the Melbourne v Geelong game for example

The MFC has one agenda. The AFL has another. There ARE some areas of commonality and the MFC should seek to drive that mileage as far as possible. I would imagine Harris and Co are thinking of doing just that.

Another reason to get Sheedy... He is the AFL ambassador for this event but as our coach would make sure the MFC stay front and centre...

I had exactly the same feeling as you Stinger2, the AFL has clearly jumped the gun so that 'their' big anniversary is front and centre of peoples minds at the start of next year. Who apart from the Melbourne diehards can remember the Demons press conference a couple of months back to announce our impending 150th? And yes it did happen.

It may well see a strange scenario occur, whereby Kevin Sheedy as ambassador is out spruiking the Australian Rules 150th (not the AFLs), and at the same time as coach of Melbourne out spruiking our very same birthday.
