Decades ago I had a book titled ‘The Mind of a Mnemonist’; a true story and a fantastic read.

The subject of the book in one of his methods, would place objects on an imaginary street, and when asked to repeat the objects in their correct order (could be 5 minutes after being read the list, or could be 5 days; it didn’t matter), h ine would bring up the imaginary street in his mind’s eye and proceed to walk down the footpath (in his mind), calling out each object as he passed it. Fascinating stuff!

So…that’s what Demonlanders could do…have an imaginary street with each player standing next to the letterbox with their number on it. Should work like a charm!!

Thank you!!!! I spent maybe 15 minutes trying to get across techniques more advanced than just chanting a fact and felt like I got turned into a punchline. (I even mentioned, same as you, how you can memorise facts/items along points on a journey or a location you know like the back of your hand.) It's not quite perfect - you need to refresh your memory occasionally - and memorising useless stuff like a hundred digits of pi is silly. But certainly I learned the numbers for the season just past in minutes this way maybe last January. Then when Ghostwriter (?) relayed a friend's training report referring to all players only by numbers it was a cinch to 'translate' it for everyone here.

EDIT: Ah yes, bingo! My comment:

Call me dumb, but I really did not understand any of that. I’m guessing it’s player numbers, in which case, not really being across most of our team’s numbers, I’m completely lost. I’ve got some serious studying to do in the next seven days!! I hope that one day the AFL might see the benefit of putting the player's name on the back of the jersey.😵‍💫

I was thinking about food/coffee places that are walking distance from Gosch’s.

I didn’t know until today that if you leave Richmond station from the opposite side (as if you’re walking to the ‘G) there’s a cafe and apparently they make really good coffee.

Curse the owners of Pink Lemonade for permanently closing the coffee Kiosk that was right outside Richmond station (Swan Street side). The coffee was superb and it was served by Alejandro, the lovely Colombian barista.

Is Viney injured?

He had just had an injection in his foot so he was limping because it was sore. It’s nothing serious

Really??

Do you want to know how many sugars Richo has in his coffee?

No need to be a smart-arze. Dingo’s question is valid. The club has been relatively transparent of late so one can wonder why there’s been no mention of this.

PS: Richo doesn’t have sugar in his coffee 😉

I like it.

If Buckley was coach he would have had much more power to demand his own people than King.

And King doesn't have the same resources at his disposal as Buckley would have.

So instead he is his building a champagne team on a beer budget.

Keeping a core of existing staff that have a positive connection with players, and presumably people he gets along with amd rates. Chaplin is the key such assistant.

And adding some quality part timers he trusts and has history with.

Quality over quantity.

Buckley was never the right choice. IMO he had“come save us Nathan” vibes all over him, which is the last thing this club needed. My remaining concerns lie around Guerra. Is he going to be the strong guiding hand we desperately need in that position? King certainly appears to have attracted some great coaching talent to the club and as you say he’s done it in a way to allow us to do it on a beer budget. Along with the addition of guys like Mihochek and Steele we’ve got great on field leaders to support a pretty talented group of youngsters. On top of that although Goodwin wasn’t perfect he didn’t insist on trading out our picks over the last few years and you have to respect him for that.

That’s a good but very basic mnemonic.

If you wanna really get acquainted with amazing mnemonics Kurt Vonnegut wrote a story about them in a short story compilation called Bagombo Snuff Box and titled Mnemonics.

Oh, wow! I’m a big Vonnegut fan, but I’m not familiar with those short stories (off to Gleebooks I go). There’s a super special collection of most of his novels in, from memory, one large volume, but it’s priced way beyond anything I can justify spending, unfortunately.

This particular compilation was written early in his career. It’s quite different from peak Vonnegut. It’s just as good though

I used to have a copy of the movie of Breakfast of Champions starring Bruce Willis, but it went missing. It’s pretty awful…Happy Birthday Wanda June and Slaughterhouse Five translated much better to film.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
