Winning a final in Melbourne is a beautiful relief

Looking down the barrel of witnessing a fourth straight sets exit live in a couple of seasons, do you feel the same way?

My sentiments are summed up in this video from the Melbourne Football Club subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/melbournefc/s/DggpgBv0tm

This made yesterdayโ€™s win so much more special. We were all well aware of what a loss wouldโ€™ve meant. Apart from the usual reasons for winning being so awesome, the threat of yet another straight sets exit made the victory feel almost like winning a grand final. The importance of that win was monumental and as a consequence I reckon thereโ€™s not as much pressure on us this week, which is a good thing.

Not gonna lie, I cried like a baby on the final siren yesterday* The relief was overwhelming, as was the feeling of pride. Also, I couldnโ€™t stop thinking about Mick and the players and how they wouldโ€™ve been feeling. I adore these girls, every one of them** and the win was exactly what they deserve. When they came over to us post-matchโ€ฆ wow, the emotion! I wish it could be bottled.

*Note to self: face paint and crying donโ€™t work together.

**The only Dees W player Iโ€™ve ever disliked is no longer a Dee. Her name rhymes with Bibby Lirch and sheโ€™s chasing her fourth premiership and if we can deny her that my life will be complete ๐Ÿ˜„

Was a great win yesterday and I enjoyed it greatly

It doesnโ€™t really impact how i feel about the menโ€™s team. and vice versa. Men winning the flag didnโ€™t make me feel any different about the womenโ€™s team. Kinda weird but I donโ€™t associate them too closely.

This club is very lucky to have a wonderful lady like you supporting them. I am sure that all the ladies in the team, and all the coaches welcome your great support. You are a very special lady who does a wonderful job.

Enormous relief. I think, though, unlike the men, there were numerous completely legit excuses for the women.

We're very young. A few of our oldies are right at the very end. We had a soft draw and the opportunity to see how we compared with only one serious contender during the season. We found ourselves on the 'wrong' side of the finals draw. We had injuries to three of our five or six most important players. The umpiring was genuinely appalling and extremely one sided.

Despite all of that we won.

Astonishing effort.

Thank you, that means a lot

Loving the sentiments here!

I was at the other three but circumstances kept me away this time(*)

I was resigned after last week, and even more so when I snuck a look at yesterday's 1/2-time score.

It was a beautiful replay watch last night. It was some game. The immediate aftermath on the field did look grand-final-win-ish!

*...and will do so again this week, dammit!

p.s. I'm not crying about a Hawks straight sets! (except Westy and Casey S)

Thank you so much, D. Youโ€™re a sweetheart. The W players and coaches make supporting them very easy. They all acknowledge and appreciate the DAโ€™s love, and the girls are so much fun to hang out with. Their enthusiasm is infectious; theyโ€™re a tonic.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourneโ€™s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time atย Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: โ€œIs Melbourne even at the ground?โ€ Moments later, as Carltonโ€™s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demonsโ€™ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.ย
