ND to depart after Essendon match

Featured Replies

Dean Laidley (poss finals)

How can we go from having a "happy-go-lucky" bloke like ND, to a "sour-faced brick wall" like Laidley????

If we employed Laidley as a coach, I would not buy a membership during his reign!!!!

Give me Vossy, Ratten, Longmire, McKenna or Todd Viney anyday!!

If our coach comes from that group then I would be more than excited about our future....

Just to name a few we might want to at least talk to:

Todd Viney

Peter Sumich

John Longmire (although poss won't make finals)

Dean Laidley (poss finals)

Just for starters...

fair enough. my mistake, i was thinking senior coaches. but my statement about that clause in ND's contract still stands, and i cant see a reason why these coaches would have different contracts, especially assistant coaches who want to move into a senior coaching role.

I would like to thank Neale Daniher for everything. I think he has been a fantastic coach and has really battled hard for the team and been excellent in trying to market the club. I really do think that at the end of the day the players have to take responsibility for the results of the team. We have always had too many passengers. Johnstone, Green, Yze etc are great players when the team is playing well but when the team is struggling they go missing and in to their shell.

It is a shame that Neale was not allowed to coach out the season - after 10 years of dedication he deserved that much. I am disgusted with the way the board has acted in this situation. You should always look after your own.

Next coach: Brett Ratten please. We don't want Voss (no experience) and we don't want Connolly. Connolly is a failure. All Fremantle has done is won 10 games in a row at the end of last year and suddenly he's a good coach. What a joke. Look at his last 5 years.

If the players dont play for ND this week i well...i dunno what i will do. They were shocking last week and owe nd a win. I would almost concider trading every player that doesent play well...a possible 22 players traded

Completely agree Old.

I remember an interview with Peter Schwab after he resigned before season's end at Hawthorn where he said there was nothing to be achieved by him coaching out the season. He is right.

But I thought you wanted to "let someone (Daniher) who has served the Club well over long period of time finish with some dignity"?

clint, i think that ND is going out with dignity. He was not sacked, he got to say that he wouldnt seek reappointment. then he made the decision not to coach out the year, meaning he can go out on his on terms. While there may have been some pushing behind the scenes, there was no public bloodletting, no "you're sacked" speach. i think he has been treated with respect and dignity. think back over all the coaching turn overs of the last few years. can you can remember one that was done with as much dignity allowing him to choose when to go out? even letting him have a testimonial game almost?

I'm not saying that he isn't going out with dignity.

It makes more sense when you see where the quote came from.

I think its the best depature from a coaching job that I can remember.

Shows he was a high quality person.

The Dogs reigned supreme in 2018 with an inaugural AFLW premiership cup and the Demons matched this feat by winning the cup as the Season 7 2022 champions.Meggs wasn’t born when the Doggies won their first VFL premiership cup against the Demons in 1954. Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
