define 'runs the lines'?

I'm afraid "runs the lines" is another pull from American Sport. Clearly we don't have any lines to run or pass over but in gridiron they are all over the bloody place (see diagram). I think it may have been Derm who created this bastard. Tony Shaw loves it, he thinks it makes him sound knowledgeable. To actually run "a line" in our game you'd have to carry the ball at least 35m or more. Hardly ever happens does it.
