Of all the sons that have been 'sired' by all the gentleman that have played the game at the highest level, some have gone on to great things, some mediocre things and some 'allegedly' terrible things. Names that come to mind include McClure, Stephenson and Scarlett - you can work out the order that best suits your needs...

It’s utterly illogical and a complete lottery. It’s a throwback to a bygone area and runs counter to all other equalisation measures.

I love the father - son as it provides a connection with the club’s past.

Where father - son is a bit distorted:

Expansion clubs - no past players so no sons yet.

Mergers - twice as many fathers, so twice as many sons.

Bastards - mum was a football groupie

I think the father son is wonderful quirk of the AFL which encourages long term buy into clubs by supporters.

 

But the current system is [censored]. As are the academy rules.

 

Get rid of all discounts, you already have preferential access to the player. That is the discount!

 

Make it so that any matched bid requires a pick in the same round/next available within ~10 picks and then additional picks to make up the points difference.

 

Any further matched picks (additional father -sons/academy picks) would require another pick as per the same rules

 

There is live trading it can be done. 

 

Therefore clubs would have to choose exactly what they want and trade into place to secure the talent they really want as opposed to get gold for a bag of chips and three pie wrappers
