Yes, an excellent start for the Kookaburra's & Boomers, TD.  Early group wins are so, so important

Men's Beach Volleyball on now along with the Rugby 7's S/F's at 11.30pm (Medal Matches from 3.00am)

Grace Brown has a real chance in the Women's cycling time trial and 4 gold medals are up for grabs in the swimming (4.30am onwards) with strong Australian representation.  The Men's 4 x 100m freestyle relay could be a classic with 6 genuine hopes

The Ledecky & Titmus dual in the 400m could produce a World record.  The wild-card's is another Aussie, Jamie Perkins, and the Kiwi, Erika Fairweather

Womens Beach Volleyball (vs China) at 2.00am, Women's Water Polo (vs China) at 4.30am and the surfing from Tahiti at 3.00am & 7.48am

And we're off the mark!!!

Grace Brown wins the Cycling time trial in emphatic fashion.  Smashes her rivals

Gold!!!

Apparently Australia's first ever medal in a time-trial (Cycling)

Unbelievable ride in difficult conditions- such a wonderful effort.

You've got to take your hat off to the Fijians.  Ultra-talented and they have never lost a match at Olympic level.  They are great to watch

Way too good for the Aussies (who will now play against South Africa for the Bronze - 3.00am)

Fiji play France for the Gold at 3 45am

Very comprehensive indeed from Fiji.

But what an effort from Grace Brown!  Great to get us off the mark so soon!

There was a bit of talk that Grace was a realistic podium chance but she turned it into a no-contest.

As @grazman mentioned, she rode the race with no fear.  Took on the corners in treacherous conditions

As you said, it's great to get a Gold early.  Takes a bit of pressure off and and adds inspiration for our other athletes

Ledecky treated the 400m heat quite seriously this morning (Paris time) so Ariarne will really need to be right on her game

But we're a chance in all 4 finals especially the 4 x 100 Freestyle for the Women

Do we know what time the Womens time trial medal ceremony will become? I'm assuming it must be some time post the mens race?

I'm recording the main Ch9 channel on a hard drive as it looks like they are using that channel as a Cover-all/Overview

So the presentation will no doubt bob up there sooner or later, TD

Needless to say, sleeping is going to be an issue over the next 2 weeks!!

A first up win for Mariafe/Clancy in the Beach Volleyball 22-20, 14-21, 16-14. They struggled at times and didn't look as in sync as they clearly were at Tokyo. But they'll be happy with that win. They fought it out well!

Brave effort by the Wallabies going down by a try in the Bronze Medal match. They were hard done by with some questionable umpiring calls in the 2nd half which cost them dearly.

Silver to Elijah Winnington in the 400m Freestyle! What a well swam race.

Edit: GOLD for Titmus as she goes back to back in the 400m Freestyle from Tokyo! What a champion!

Update

GOLD, GOLD, GOLD for Australia! Womens 4x100m Freestyle Relay team with the Gold and an Olympic record!

Edit: Silver for our mens 4x100m Freestyle Relay team. And what a final leg from Kyle Chalmers! Bodes well for the 100m Freestyle.

Silver

Fabulous effort from the Boomers, still think Brian Goorjian is one of the best basketball coaches we've ever had and I love the fact that he showed them their OT loss to Spain in 2019 before this game.

Sad that we couldn't quite get it done in the sevens, really like this version of Rugby.

Love your work Macca. Will be tough for Australia to have as amazing day as yesterday, but still some genuine medal chances elwith Jess Fox and Emma McKeon both in action.

Will also be interesting to see if the Matildas can bounce back in their match tonight and how our Womens 7's team start off their campaign?

From memory, we were in with a chance for at least 1 Gold Medal on all the days of competition at Tokyo.  The other memory was no crowds!  If the Opals can make it to the final, that event (Women's Basketball) is on the last day and the very last Gold Medal match

And you're right, Jess Fox gives us our best chance tonight whilst Emma McKeon is always competitive.  And our teams in action can set up medal chances down the track as can the Surfer's & Skateboarder's

Rebecca Henderson is an outside chance in the Women's Mountain Bike Cross Country at 10.10pm

Hockeyroos get it done 2-1 in their opening match against South Africa.  They'll be wanting to medal after going undefeated in the Group stage at Tokyo, only to then lose a Quarter Final to India. Brooke Peris looks a very good player for us!

And bad luck to The Sharks (mens Waterpolo) who went down to Spain earlier this evening. Couldn't repeat the great work of The Stingers (our women) who knocked off China in the early hours of this morning.

Simone Biles is just mesmerisingly good in the Gymnastics.  Her floor exercise had to be seen to be believed but she is just as good with the apparatus disciplines

A very dominant win first up by our Women in the Rugby 7's 34-5 over South Africa. They'll certainly be a gold medal chance if they keep playing this way. Maddison Levi in particular looks a star!

Gold to Australia and Jessica Fox! What a champion she is!

Our Womens Rugby 7's does it again with a 36-5 win over Great Britain! They play a tough entertaining style of Rugby. Certainly looking a lot better than the Matildas at the moment...

Jessica Fox - An Absolute Star!

And Jess has still got the C1 (Canoe Single) to come

And well done to the Matilda's winning against Zambia in a goalfest!  They've kept the dream alive

The Women's Rugby 7's team are looking awesome

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
