Virgin had a triple status points promotion a few weeks ago and in a desperate desire to take advantage I reached for the AFL schedule and spontaneously booked 1 ticket to Brisbane to see us play the LIons. I arrive midday Friday and leave Sat morning.

I have booked cheap accommodation a 10 minute walk away. I'm on my own (can't believe I got the leave pass from Mrs BIg Col but I don't look a gift horse in the mouth)

Only thing I haven't organised is footy tickets, although I'm also keen on catching up with Dees fans when there. So ...
1/ How do I get tickets that are around Dees fans? Is there an allocation?
2/ Are there any functions or pubs or hang outs that Dees fans are likely to congregate?

3/ Any D'Landers who want to catch up before or after for a beer etc ?

4/ Anything else to know?

Go Big Col!
Straight up off the mat after Monday’s schemozzle and back on that red and blue pony!

I salute you!

Yeah... I've only just wandered back on....
Ticket already booked
I oddly feel more comfortable when I don't think we're a premiership chance anymore. I might be able to enjoy games again!

Is your accommodation far away from the Pineapple Hotel?

Fair. But tbh we’ve not been close so far this year.
Had a thought that with Trac out, and the pressure kinda off, the boys might relax, click and start enjoying their footy again…

Hears hoping they do in Brisvegas with you watching…

This is where many Dees fans congregate before and after the match. It’s definitely where Demon Army members meet.

I'm at the Paramount Motel which I believe is about 3 minutes walk away!

Oh, I will be there! Do you know how to ensure I'm seated with decent (ie Melbourne) people?

That's your target pub then. Usually a good amount of Dees supporters, especially after the game. Good pub too.

Dont want to speak for Demon Deb, but the Qld Demons function is usually around the Gold Coast game.

That’s where I usually stay but I heard it had closed down (?) so I’ve booked elsewhere this time.

Brisbane crowd are pretty sedate. I usually get the best tickets I can and go with it.

Now you've got me worried. I booked through a third party online site and they've accepted my booking (made 2 weeks ago). I'm going to have to follow that up.

We’re in section 16/17 behind the goals (gate 8).

Definitely do!

I’ve stayed there a few times but when I rang to book for our round two match last year I was told they no longer operate. I’d be rapt if they were still operating because it’s a unique place. It’s got Bates Motel vibes.

Col, if you are there for a few days and you like a beer (and a pork knuckle), the German Club is across the road from the Gabba. Too busy for me on game days, but a nice old club. You will be staying close.

Where does one buy tickets to sit there?

We have a generous allocation so if you’d like to sit with us you can email

… to express your interest. 👍🏽

All good, Col. I rang the Paramount and they are still in business, so your booking should be fine.

What happened was, they closed temporarily for renovations and the new managers are running it now. This is great news except for one thing, it’s no longer a replica of Bates Motel 😭 which was the reason I loved staying there.

We shoulda done this too but alas we (7 of us) will be sitting upper tier, aisle 416 through gate 9.

there’s usually a good smattering of dees supporters up there although last year there were a couple of obnoxious so called lions supporters that left at half time thank goodness

N.B. they were definitely lost - I’m sure they got the Gabba mixed up with Suncorp stadium and thankfully took their s$!t talking there!!

*nervously laughs, but sincerely hopes Clintosaurus is joking*

  • PREVIEW: West Coast Eagles

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).

  • PREGAME: West Coast

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

  • POSTGAME: Richmond

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
