PODCAST: SF vs Carlton

Listening now and I note @binman mentioned his disappointment at Kozzies low pressure acts/pressure rating but with Kozzie playing more as a lead up forward out of the goalsquare he had a different role in the 2nd half.

For a pod where we all remained (understandably) enveloped in a mood melancholy, that was a fantastic effort guys.  Great analysis as usual, giving sound cause for hope in 2024, and of course, huge optimism for the 2023 AFLW season.  Thanks for all your hard work, which consistently makes the Demonland Pod the best in the business!  Go Dees!

Do you believe there are really questions to be answered in terms of how we’re treated by the umpires? Does the club need to officially make some point about Max getting clobbered on and off the ball, or the severity of our suspensions, etc etc. Does it need to appeal these suspensions more vociferously?

Is this really an issue just against us? Or is the umpiring of the game more generally in trouble and all supporters of all clubs feel they’re hard done by. (The ARC is obviously a whole separate issue that everyone is unsatisfied with). Or should we just straighten up our kicking in which case we win most of the games we lost this year, umpires be damned…?

Thanks for addressing this! Just to clarify, I'm also loathe to blame the umpires, and like @binman I don't believe there's some greater conspiracy to see a Carlton/Collingwood GF (I think the AFL would do just as well out of the story of a Dees/Pies one but anyway), or any of the other nonsense about clubs being favoured/targeted etc. I don't even really mind the inconsistencies as long as it all roughly works out in the end, and again, a few straight kicks (or just three more behinds!) and I suspect we wouldn't be talking about the umps.

BUT, the Max-handling is insane, it's a real problem. Maybe it's cos he's so big, and also such a large character in the game that people think he's indestructible. And as our skipper he does a good job of shaking it off. But sometimes it's hard to not see it as some kind of lack of respect for him or the club. The pile on in the media this week about how fragile we are after whoever it was saying Gus getting knocked out affected the team (which of COURSE it effing did!) – the fact of that pile on suggests making any statement about Max's treatment would basically make us the sooky pariahs of the comp.

So yeah, bloody straighten up the kicks and also, the ARC can gagf.

Thanks for the pod fellas, you're doing the lord's (or rather the demon's) work there.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
