The high hopes the club had for Weideman as a key forward have faded since he had his supposed break out finals series in 2018. He did however, surprise with good effect late in the season at Casey when he took over the ruck role improving with every game despite being on the short side for the position. He was traded to the Bomber during Trade Week for Pick 37 in the Draft.

They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
