New rule for this thread: Anyone who says Harmes should have been picked also has to say who should have been omitted to allow that to happen.

Arguably Hunt.

It could be, Gawn used to drop back and help out, but am noticing hes dropped off a lot in this role and I'm unsure why?

More time forward to provide a marking option I guess SFebes.

Very true mate. I think his best footy is behind the ball but every now and then he goes forward and has a blinder. Still dont think we get enough goals out of him though, or our mids in general.

I love the Maxy that gets back to help out and takes those intercept marks and would also prefer that in all honesty with the odd foray forward. I guess it's just a hole that needs filling up front right now..

Don’t forget that I think it was Cox who deliberately and recklessly charged Max from behind in a marking contest with knees to the back.  A dog act by a lowlife 😎..............

I've not forgotten. He had no other intention but to injure. Would dearly love to see retribution in the form of a knee to the solar plexus at Cox's first centre bounce.

Aside from that I don't mind the big Yank. He has a quirky sense of humour & deserves credit for carving out a career in a foreign game

I’m in a bet with mates group, we always bet head to head anywhere from 3-5 games a week. There’s been at least one major upset 15 out of the 20 rounds played  this season.

Fair enough, but I guess it all depends on how you define major upset. If you have one team at $1.50 (odds of 1 to 2) and it's opponent at $3 (odds of 2 to 1), across all 9 games you would expect mathematically the team at $3 to win roughly 2 out of 9 and those wouldn't be upsets,  just averages.

Don't start me again - byes are an abomination in any fair competition.  Gil please note.

Well obviously byes are impossible to avoid if you have an odd number of teams (although I don't know why 4 byes are needed in the VFL this year). I assume currently the AFL could have no byes but they have decided to have one bye for each team staggered over 3 weeks to provide some rest for players. I don't know why they should be seen as an abomination.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say it should be a rule but I agree you can't have an in without an out. I'd go further. If it's not s straight swap posters should explain explain their proposed positional changes.  If Harmes comes in, I assume Hunt would go out and Gus would move back to the backline. Given how effective Gus's move was last week and the role Hunt played, selectors have decided to stick with last week's structure which wouldn't work with Harmes in and Hunt out.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
