How Simon Goodwin inspired the Demons to a Flag

Absolutely a strength. His role is to set the framework under which everyone works and ensure the goals within it are met. This is essentially the game plan and culture. To do this best you need the best under you to implement that framework. It is just like in business, the best bosses and managers are the ones that set a clear line of sight of what is required and then hire the best people and let them use their skills to find the best way to that target.

I get the feeling he was too hands on feeling he needed to do everything for the first few years. Something clicked, probably in a conversation with one of the mentors he speaks of, where he learnt to let go and trust the people he had hired to do their bit. He then just needs to ensure it is all coming together cohesively. I have always got the feeling Clarko is a fair bit the same.

Really good summary

I think you are spot on. Simon was called stubborn for a long time.
He learnt to trust his employees (including players) to do their job after they knew exactly what needed to be done.
his job was then to keep it all together and make sure the bond of trust was strong. Mark Williams and Yze made sure the skills were all there…

Showing clips like the above are so clever, players had to believe that they could play at 100% pressure and beat the opponent.
Not just do it, but thrive…

We all saw the results

  • GAMEDAY: Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG after a dismal performance in Gather Round to face the reigning dual Premiers Brisbane. What do expect to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
