John Northey got everything out of that group. They had a great record against Hawthorn - better than any other side over that period 87-91, when the Hawks won three flags and were runner up in another play off.  Putting them out of the finals in 1990 was probably my second greatest footy memory, after round 22 1987.

All heil John Northey, the footballing magician.

What I don’t understand is why this loss is talked about but no one seems to ever mention that other loss, the one at the hands of Fitzroy, 42 years ago (28 July 1979). Is it because that was so much longer ago?

This was before my time, but the most amazing thing about this game is that we won the next week!

Another thing to kill off VFL Park was that it was the coldest, iciest, most windswept place in the southern hemisphere, apart from Cape Horn, and Ballarat.

Plus, modern stadiums are shaped like bowls. Waverley was shaped like a saucer. If you weren't in the first tier of seats, you needed a telescope to see what was going on when the ball was on the opposite side of the ground.

And that stupid bloody giant brown TV.

And if you were on the first tier close to the fence you couldn't see the play on the other side because it was raised in the middle to help with drainage. And you got splinters in your bum from the wooden seats. And it took 2 hours to get out of the car park. And we always played the Hawks there and got belted. Besides that it wasn't bad.

Seriously though a couple of my favourite footy memories were there, winning the Prelim in 88 and knocking the Pies out in 89. And the Panasonic Cup against the Cats in 89. And Farmers goal of the year in 97. Missed the 88 & 91 EFs though.

Yet another case of late season altitude sickness near the top of the ladder.

From memory Lyon got injured and missed the rest of the season the next game. He was our only real star so that was that.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
