That is absolutely not the case, he's been brilliant this year. Clearly been working on this part of his game and is best ruckman in the comp hands down this season

No no AF knows everything. Silly me thought Jones could play forward and it's heresy to suggest Gawn could as well. It's AFs forward line and no correspondence will be entered into.

Gawn is also a horrible field kick and kick for goal. I'd rather they played him in the ruck and then rest him on the bench or across half back.

Gawn’s field kicking is the opposite of that, his goal kicking is where he still needs work. The old left hook off the boot.

Am lukewarm on the selection Jackson at this stage. I agree that he has a lot of promise and will be a part of our long term future. But this is a must win game  for us and an experienced forward in Brown seems to be the smart choice up forward in my humble option. I would have thought that this was the ideal time to pick him when we are lacking in tall forwards and the basis of the reason to recruit him and if he is continually overlooked - then why did we recruit him?  Gee I hate the Hawks and hope that Jackson has an impact.

I'm a little more than lukewarm, I think he debuted well and this hub format seems to provide a good platform for emerging talent.

However I would have had Brown as replacement for T Mac, an older heavier body against the Hawks.

Jackson on the bench as a burst player to relieve Max who must be rested (managed) for what is a more intensive program.

I have always maintained a greater use of the squad picking players needed to respond to the different styles and structures of the opposition..

I really think we finally have a squad with the range of players we need to win the flag.

We just need some confidence and some astute coaching.

Do you really believe that?? If you do good luck but the reality is we still need a goalkicking KPF and better ball users with more than a touch of Brilliance. Every team has one at least , some have 4 or 5. Harley B is probably the purest in class but he has had so long out you cant rely on him. Max yes but Im talking Superstar quality like Dangerfield, Martin and that Ilk. We haven't had a genuine superstar for a heck of a long time.

One other thing, I dont rate the coach all that much either. I firmly believe Goody is a nice bloke but is out of his league in coaching Nous. We should be looking Now for 2021 IMV

Nup a Long way from a premiership I think!

Happy to discuss, just disagree. Freedom of speech and all, Biffboy.

Well yes it may have been a bit of overoptimism.

BUT

I have suggested Trac could be The Burgoyne, Jarman solid bulldozer brilliance

Kossie could be the Rioli, Betts type,

May Lever are a solid defence unit for talks, the structure we had today seemed pretty well balanced.

While we don't have a Johnathan Brown, T Mac can play the bullocking Centre Half forward and who knows what Brown might do.

Jackson today showed some glimpses of real talent and could become a Royce Hart, James Hird.

and Bennell .........well. Long and what's is name from Adelaide ????

And MAX what he can do is still expanding and his leadership is improving.

Every premiership team has a number of solid performers and even some underperformers. We have plenty of both. Enough to fill the team and also some handy backup to replace injured etc. Would you rest Max in the lead up by playing Pruess . With Jones as a sentimental favourite you could play into form for the final tilt.

Is the coach up to it? So far the answer appears no, but I still expect great things from this team

Yep but one week at a time but were were very good today!

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
