Now that the votes have been tabulated there should be recognition of some outstanding efforts by those who did not get votes but whose contribution made a huge difference.

Hannan's two passes to Weed and Melksham when he was entitled to have a shot himself showed match awareness and vision to take the best options and execute perfectly. Long time since we have seen this in our team. His chase and tackle to win a free kick which he converted was magnificent. Three touches, three goals - a major contribution.

Kozzie's pass to Harley at the end was priceless. Again, it took match awareness and vision with perfect execution. Earlier in the quarter Kozzie retrieved a loose ball in the backline and in a flash hand passed it to a running team mate. So what you might ask. Well it was the shepherd that followed that set him apart - simply superb and completely freed up his team mate. Maturity in a young recruit.

Late, but...

I was contemplating not giving Oliver any votes because he butchered the ball so badly. However, in the end he gets one vote for obviously listening to the coach and making a greater effort to kick the ball rather than blindly handpass it.

I'm also surprised that Hannan got so many votes. He's impresive when he's near the ball. he just doesn't get near it often enough. I also contemplated votes for Weideman for the opposite reason. He got to the ball a lot and while he had only a few possessions himself, his work at the contest brought the other forwards into the game.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
