Crazy amount of work to create this from week to week.  You deserve a medal!

%change vs 2019....am i correct to assume from these stats that 4 players have improved and the rest have gone backwards?

Really felt development has been an issue but this paints even more of the picture!

Hannan has improved marginally.  Sparrow barely played in 2019 so presume his increase is expected.  Steven May a slight increase.  Petracca improved dramatically.   We had such a crappy year in 2019 and we have 4 players in total to improve on that.

Ahhh actually just saw the % change with -20% time adjustment.  This actually paints another picture.  Most have improved from last year which feels marginal but more true.  2019 was awful!  10 senior players have got worse....Salem, Harmes, Fritch, T Mac, ANB, Jones, Melksham, Weideman, Jetta and Hunt.  What is going on with this lot haha?!

More enjoyable doing this if we were showing some sort of cohesion and purpose NVROD.

Sadly i think the hap hazard performances might be the result of systemic failure within the FD & morale of the playing group in general.  I'm a true believer in body language and from what i'm witnessing in the box, on the bench and from the game day footage inside the rooms, my gut feel tells me things are not going well inside the four walls of late.

The wheels have well and truly fallen off.

Rnd 17, 2020 GABBA - GWS vs Demons

Very rare for a genuine defender to top these weighted stats tables.  Let alone two!  Maybe Salem playing a part time role off HB on occasions in 2019 but not sure whether he actually did or not.

May's 11th top five finish for the season.  What a year he's having.  Old Man rolls in at No.2 for an early break out game.  Throw in Lever and that's three defenders in the top five.  Our defence is the bomb this season.  And then there's that forward line.  Gadzooks.  Spargo about the only good thing.  Although Mitch may have played an extra spare dropping back at times, and at least one ruck contest for a hit out!  Definitely his best game at the MFC so far IMV.

Pickett also showing something more of what were hoping we were in for with a top 5 finish.  Just needs to hit the scoreboard a few more times with the chances he's getting to put the icing on the cake.  I suspect he is a pre-season or two away from this, needing to build a hardened bod to get the extra distance and steady over that step or two around corners etc.

Top five for meters gained....

1.  May with 467   2.  Ed 462   3. Salem 369   4. Baker 334   5. Pickett 319

Happy to get the win but not getting too excited in terms of improvement statistically anyway.  Team score being approx 3% below the 2019 season average and 14% down on 2018.

Rusty how does metres gained get calculated for kick outs? May took most of them,  I'm assuming that if he kicks from within the goal square it doesn't count (it doesn't count as a kick either), but if he plays on for a few metres first it counts for both?

Yes once he plays on they count the ground covered then meters gained from the kick Ox.

As with most stats we can access this one is a poor cousin to the ones that are sitting inside the Champion data library.

Ideally we would want to see the most efficient meters gained.  That's effective meters gained ie;  meters gained from running/kicking that doesn't end in a turnover PLUS assisted meters gained ie; as the name suggests how many meters the player you effectively gave the ball to ...gains (the above are excerpts from a pretty good article that covers this from ESPN below)...

Thanks, Rusty

Here’s hoping this is not the last one for the year!

Interesting to note we had more players above 3, and less below 1 than we seem to have most weeks.  To have the full back at #3 is really unbelievable - May has been fabulous.  I know the stats don’t  show H/o to advantage, but in the first half Max had a day out at the fair!

Yes that would be about May's 12th top five finish in these tables.  Quite incredible as the stats tend to usually favour the mids as we know.

That was our third best team score for the season.  A 13% improvement on our 2019 season average and matching our 2018 season average.

Maxy must have been well ahead of everyone in the supercoach ratings etc at half time.  He was killing it for sure.

Honestly, had the mids connected with the forwards and a few more of the forwards performed to a decent level in that third quarter they wouldn't have got anywhere near us.  We owned them in the third but didn't capitalise on the amount of good work being done outside 50.  That last kick inside 50 is still a long way off AFL worthy also.

We will tread water again next season if we don't fix the disconnect and the lack of KF/small forward/forward pressure issues.  Kozzy will be fine.  I would even consider giving Hunt a 1 year contract on the back of that performance.  Fritta is ok if he can fix his accuracy on set shots.  Not sure about the rest of our forward line though.  Needs an overhaul IMHO.

2020 H&A Season - Weighted Averages

Clarry tops the weighted stats charts for the third year running and yes for those wondering, these tables account for turnovers!

Biggest fall from grace is Harmes who finished 2nd last season and Melk dropping off even further after a pretty ordinary 2019.  The biggest rise obviously Tracc with the break out year we were all hoping for.  Add a bit of zip and class on the outside (non-Ed wing) and that mid field could be something special in  2021.

Fix the forward line woes and the last kick coming inside 50 more often and next year could be something decent.  Don't and i fear we may well be in for something akin to this season.

If the Dockers get over the line this arvo hopefully we can bring LJ in.  Would be great to see the 3 Amigos (Kozzy, RIvers & LJ)  playing a final together in their first year!

P.S.  should have added May into the big risers category alongside Tracc.  The big fella's had some year.

Thanks again rusty.

I think that is all for this year.  The stats show that we have a few major gaps - a bit more class in the middle (outside run), a T-Mac (interesting that he ranked the same last year and this year) and a small forward to support Kozzie.

Ollie, Trac, May and Langdon had great years, and I expect to see them at the top of the Bluey.  It will be interesting to see the Bluey top 10 vs this list.

Appreciate your efforts in 2020.

Morning Buck.  Unfortunately another year passes and we wait once again for some traction.  Yes the old Bluey.  For mine it comes down to consistency and Clarry is top of the tree here.  Rain, hail or shine the bloke puts in.  No.1 contested possession getter in the league.  If he doesn't win the Bluey they got rocks in their heads i reckon.  All the best during the off season and thanks for your input also ✌️

We have 3 players in the top 10 or so in the league for clangers. And 4 of the top 16 for turnovers.  (Langdon).

We overrate our midfield. It was a butchering machine this year. Goodwin needs to engineer a more efficient system or personnel somehow.  He keeps talking about building a brand for finals which is ironic cause the brand cant cut the mustard over 22 home and away rounds.

I always wonder if the turnovers are the fault of the midfielders (lack of skills or decision making) or forwards (not in position or moving).

I think with us its a bit of both,  but I do think if we can sort the forward line out (through cosching, player learning/improving/growth or recruitment) the mids will look like stars.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the

We'll break down the Match SIM against North Melbourne and wrap up the preseason with insights into training and our latest recruits.
