Ron Evans passed away this morning

Featured Replies

Apparently former AFL commissioner and Essendon full forward Ron Evans passed away this morning after a brief fight with stomach cancer.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Thanks Ash.

He was a good contributor to the AFL scene through his role as an AFL Commissioner.

Condolences to family and friends.

Condolences to Ron Evans family and friends at this time :(

He was a great contributor to AFL football as a player and an administrator.

I can't recall ever hearing a bad thing said about him.

He will be a loss to the game.

Condolences to family and friends.

Really?? I can't think of a commissioner with more bad things said about him than Evans.

I suppose many will be taking the "nothing nice to say, say nothing at all" approach right now.

Condolences to his family

Poor bloke

Not quite as strong as that, I do believe he set up Spotless to have a captive audience that had all footy fans paying above reasonable prices for food.

It is my understanding that most of his decisions that counted, either benefited him in

(1)his role as majority shareholder in The Spotless Group or

(2) the Essendon Football Club in their large share of Telstra Dome.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
