STRUCK DOWN

The veteran defender was struck down by an ACL injury in a pre season game at Casey and played no further part in the club's 2017 campaign. Will turn 30 early next season and there must be some doubt as to his playing future despite having another year left on his contract.

It’ll be interesting to see whether he does play on or an agreement is reached

If he does, does anyone really expect him to make the senior side?

I think he can definitely add experience at Casey, and he’s another player from the last decade who ‘seems like a good bloke’ but is a vanilla footballer - has no massive weapons to his game, tries hard, but is fairly limited from an ‘impact’ perspective

remember when he ‘held’ Buddy (I think the then Hawk kicked 3.4 or something, but everyone seemed to agree Garland play well) and he looked like he might develop into a very good defender?

He was sort of just ‘there’ over the last few seasons before the acl, and we’ve definitely got a tall defensive crew who have gone past him - is he really better tall defensive depth than Keilty, J Smith, etc.?

I tend to think not

Can he play a different role?

I saw him debut against the Swans at the scg - from memory, didn’t have a touch until the third quarter - and he’s had a few notable cameos getting on the scoreboard; maybe they’ll try him as a forward at Casey?

Another MFC list management masterstroke: a three year contract for a bloke who was destined to spend the majority of the contract in the VFL.

We need to implement a rule that states no long term contracts for players aged over 26 unless they are in the top 10 players on the list.

That said, I think Garland offers more next year than we'll get from the likes of Kennedy, Vandenberg & McKenna.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
